M1.2 and M1 solar flares, that's more activity than in months.

Yes, the sun has awakened a bit:

    From spaceweather.com:

Quote SOLAR ACTIVITY INTENSIFIES (UPDATED): Sunspot complex AR2565-AR2567 is crackling with M-class solar flares as magnetic fields threading the behemoth active regions stretch, twist, and re-connect. Mike Taormina photographed the sunspots' seething cores from his backyard observatory in Malta, New York:

"The sun was alive with activity today!" says Taormina. "I am constantly amazed at the impressive level of detail that a small solar telescope can capture under good seeing conditions."

Update: A series of explosions crossing the July 20-21 UT day boundary hurled two CMEs away from the sun's southwestern limb. Coronagraph images from SOHO show that the clouds are not heading directly for Earth. Nevertheless, glancing blows to our planet's magnetic field may be possible in 2 to 3 days. NOAA analysts are modeling the storm clouds now. Stay tuned for storm tracks.

Yes, also M2 flare today. Very interesting to see this much activity after a long quiet period.

"Three moderately strong solar flares were observed early Saturday morning around the departing region. The first was an M5.0 at 02:11 UTC (July 23). The second event, a strong M7.6 at 05:16 UTC, was quickly followed up by an impressive M5.5 event at 05:31 UTC. The third event (M5.5)"

I just noticed on spaceweather.com that there has been at least one M-flare today.... I don't know who-done-it yet, but will post just as soon as it gets reported:

Below is the only detail that I have found on the M-dlare that occured Aug 7th (from spaceweather.com):

Quote M-CLASS SOLAR FLARE: Earth-orbiting satellites detected an M1-class solar flare on Aug. 7th at 0700 UT along with a general increase in minor flare activity. Because NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory is still recovering from safe-mode (triggered by the lunar transit of Aug. 2nd) we don't yet know what is the source of the flares. Stay tuned for updates.
The don't know where the flare came from !?! How convenient.... and people wonder how an asteroid could slip by the "observers" and blow us all to smitherines... HA!

    Here's a pict from SolarSolf, M1.3 from S12W70 peaking at 14:44 UTC:

That was folllowed closely with a C8.5 from N04E89 (2573) peaking at 15:09UTC:

There hasn't been much going on on the sun in quite a while, but several times today I have run into mention of alarms and warnings for some unknown space weather threat.

It appears that an executive order was issued from the US gov, even.

    https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press...weather-events

Maybe OB has just finally gotten around to start organizing what we should expect of them should the grid go down due to unexpectd (or predicted) space weather events. Check out "Section 5 Implementation".

Here's a vid that mentions some apparently recent unusual activity. The cosmic ray data is important, but otherwise, I don't know that it truely is so unusual since I surely have seen some wilder looking things in the past 8 years that I research and collect data on the sun-space weather field. I am not trained to determine what's what and so I just don't know what to think of it all... but it is fascinating to try to understand.

I am blaming the huge uptick in big EQs these past few days on this:

Quote GEOMAGNETIC STORMS TODAY: Minor (G1) to moderate (G2) geomagnetic storms are likely on Oct. 27th as Earth continues to move through a fast-moving stream of solar wind. Polar sky watchers should remain alert for auroras.

    Solar wind
    speed: 606.3 km/sec
    density: 5.7 protons/cm3

    The Radio Sun
    10.7 cm flux: 78 sfu

    Planetary K-index
    Now: Kp= 3 quiet
    24-hr max: Kp= 6 storm

    Interplanetary Mag. Field
    Btotal: 5.7 nT
    Bz: -5.2 nT south

    Coronal Holes: 27 Oct 16

Earth is inside a stream of solar wind flowing from this wide coronal hole.
I just compares the data for today with that of Aug 24 2016, the date of the last EQ disaster in Italy... looks similar.

After a long while there has been some solar flaring activity.

    From SolarHam:

"Two M-flares including an M1.2 at 23:38 UTC (Nov 29) have been observed thus far. Both flares, the earlier flare being an impulsive M1.0, were not large enough to generate a noteworthy coronal mass ejection. Additional flaring may be possible as the region continues to evolve"

Woohoo!! Who would have thought? I am quite surprised!

    From spaceweather.com:

Quote UNEXPECTED SOLAR FLARE: Yesterday, Nov. 29th at 1723 UT, new sunspot AR2615 surprised forecasters when it suddenly erupted, producing an impulsive M1-class solar flare. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory caught the flash of extreme ultraviolet (UV) radiation:

Following months of negligible solar flare activity, the sudden emergence of AR2615 and its subsequent explosion caught forecasters off guard. A pulse of UV and X-radiation from the explosion ionized the upper layers of Earth's atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean: map. This affected the normal propagation of radio waves. Mariners and ham radio operators may have noticed brief fade-outs and/or unexpected hops at frequencies below ~10 MHz.

A few hours later, it happened again. At 23:38 UT on Nov. 29th, AR2615 produced an M1.2-class flare, causing a short-lived radio blackout over Australia.

This is *not* a major space weather event, but it is a break from the sun's recent deepening quiet. NOAA forecasters estimate a 10% chance of additional M-flares on Nov. 30th.
And just look at this action after such a long time being almost flatlined:

    I'm impresed!

Well it certainly looks like we are well on our way to a solar minimum, I wonder how long it will take to drop global temperatures... I'd assume years, but some evidence shows our last ice age was rather sudden.

Well, a little bit (of action) is better than none:

The sun perked up a bit today with a few C-flares... the stronger ones were: one C9.3 peaking at at 07:26 UTC

    and a C6.1 peaking at 11:08 UTC.

At least some of the Cosmic Rays will be warded off, maybe...

There have been five M-class flares within the last 24 hours. First one was the M4.4 mentioned in my previous post, then came M5.3, M2.3, M5.7 flares and we just got a M1.3 flare. Clearly this is more activity than in many months. Last year we got only very few M-class flares. Current solar flare risk is 60 % for M-class and 20 % for the X-class ones. It's safe to say that we could see more activity soon.

There was a minor M1 flare today and it was the strongest flare in a good while, no surprises there.
Also it seems that our sun has gone blank again.

More fireworks for a change of pace duing our continuing plunge into the solar minimum of Solar Cycle 24!

Sunspot 2665, the biggest sunspot this year so far, has been producing quite an array of B and C flares since its arrival into the Earth-facing view of our Sun and it even popped off an M1.3 early this morning peaking at 03:18 UTC:

    From spaceweather.com:
Quote SOLAR FLARE AND RADIO BLACKOUT: Big sunspot AR2665 erupted on July 9th at 0318 UT, producing an M1.3-class solar flare. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the extreme ultraviolet flash:

UV and X-radiation from the flare bathed the top of Earth's atmosphere on the dayside of our planet. Ions produced by this electromagnetic pulse altered the normal propagation of shortwave radio transmissions over east Asia and Australia. This radio blackout map from NOAA shows the geographical regions affected. People who might have noticed blackouts, fades, and other transmission irregularities include aviators, mariners, and ham radio operators.

Yahoo! The sun has called me back to my monitoring position!

A new active region formed around N11W68 and set off a few flares, the biggest so far being a C8.4 peaking last night at 20:05 UTC.

Early this morning sunspot 2665 let off a whamming M2.4 peaing around 02:09 UTC:

    From spaceweather.com:

Quote STRONG SOLAR FLARE AND CME: After days of suspenseful quiet, huge sunspot AR2665 finally erupted on July 14th (0209 UT), producing a powerful and long-lasting M2-class solar flare. Extreme ultraviolet telescopes onboard NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the blast:

Remarkably, the explosion persisted for more than two hours, producing a sustained fusillade of X-rays and energetic protons that ionized the upper layers of Earth's atmosphere. Shortwave radio blackouts were subsequently observed over the Pacific Ocean and especially around the Arctic Circle. This map from NOAA shows the affected geographic regions.

Of even greater interest is the coronal mass ejection (CME). The explosion hurled a bright CME away from the blast site, and it appears to be heading for Earth:

This expanding cloud will likely reach our planet on July 16th, possibly sparking geomagnetic storms and high-latitude auroras when it arrives. Stay tuned for improved predictions as NOAA analysts model the trajectory and potency of the incoming CME.
