Wakey-wakey! Look what we have here, protons and electrons have been going haywire.

    News from spaceweather.com:

Quote CME IMPACT, SEVERE GEOMAGNETIC STORM: Arriving earlier than expected, a CME hit Earth's magnetic field on March 17th at approximately 04:30 UT. At first, the impact sparked a relatively mild G1-class (Kp=5) geomagnetic storm. Since then, however, the storm has intensified to G4-class (Kp=8), ranking it as the strongest geomagnetic storm of the current solar cycle. This storm is underway now. Before sunrise, bright auroras were sighted over several northern-tier US states including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Montana, the Dakotas and Washington. Marketa Murray sends this picture from Dalton Highway in Alaska:

This storm could continue for many hours to come as Earth passes through the turbulent wake of the CME. Stay tuned for updates.

Yes, a 'significant event', three CMEs arrived today starting about 0430 UTC/GMT.

The attached image shows a New Zealand receiving site displaying in a horizontal waterfall image of extremely weak transmissions (less than 100 mW) from Europe and N America.

As the CME hits the ionosphere, it 'wobbles' and this momentary movement puts a Doppler shift of up to 10 Hz on the signals.

So what? Will it stop your iPad, TV or hair-dryer from working? No, this one is still orders of magnitude too weak to have any effects 99% of people will notice - unless they see an aurora display. It'll wipe out communications for some hours on the higher HF bands, but again, that will only effect radio hams and a few niche non-critical comms links these days.

Nevertheless, an interesting event for those of us that have nothing better to do...

    Nick

PS: Off topic, but it's exactly these kinds of continuous amateur observations that would make HAARP operations impossible to hide if it were emitting so much energy it could alter the weather, let alone create earthquakes!

The geomagnetic storm was so strong that it created ground currents and apparently caused some power outages in different places.

Yup. A classic example of the paradox of these events tending to be more pronounced shortly after the solar-cycle peak.

No doubt the swinging of the earth's magnetic filed would have set off my home-made UFO detector if I'd had the presence of mind to switch it on!

Yeah, pretty exciting watching the Hobart Magnetogram and data plot via IPS Oz.

Bz component went down near -310 nT!

Also the new Launceston magnetogram and K plot were live for this one.

Maybe the mods think this should be another thread...?

    But anyway...

    There are a number of not very scientific assumptions here;

    1) UFOs exist - well they do whatever they are! (I'm not necessarily a believer that they are any 'craft' from here, there or anywhere)
    2) They can de detected
    3) There are anecdotal reports of them stopping petrol-fuled vehicles but not diesel ones (different engine electrics) when 'up close' that suggest strong magnetic effects.

Ray Stanford was director of Project Starlight International in the mid 70s published small pamphlet containing two crude magnetic-compass type designs. There have been others.

Time and technology moves on. I have a design based on a hall-effect semi-conductor, designed for use a as compass. Really it's just a crude magnetometer. As such it can detect changes in magnetic fields. Theoretically a UFO changes the earth's magnetic field locally. This change is detected and sets off an alarm.

There are UFO detectors available online which I assume work in the same way as mine, using a 1490 magnetic compass chip.

Anyone understanding the principles will realise that it's not going to be very sensitive, but as far as I can tell, it's the only easy-to-use, cheap device widely available. It's almost certainly more sensitive than the mechanical compass designs!

Nevertheless, mine did go off repeatedly last year following similar intense CMEs - so it does work! As for detecting UFOs...?

More info on a new thread if there's any real interest.

    Nick

PS: Found this relevant old post of mine here which I'd forgotten about.

It's good that you were able to take that pic, they always clean those charts so we don't get to see the real readings. The solar activity seems to keep the cosmic rays at bay, but always when the Sun goes silent we start to see more of those rays and they produce more clouds.

I think suspiciousObserver said something a couple months back about plasma from the Sun from a cme can shield the earth, like a secondary shield, from cosmic rays.
We did have auroras reach as far south as where I am but I missed it.

So... Anyone else seeing the cosmic rays with their (left) eyes now? Meaning the small red & blue particles. And in case you're wondering; no, I 'm not making this up. Just recording my observations. I just can't be the only one who can see such things, I'm sure there are other people blue-eyed with working pineal glands... And that's my dry humor.
