A couple minor M flares and a filament eruption. Cosmic rays and now protons are up. Quite a blast indeed.

M5.6 flare, our dear sun isn't giving up yet... Though still waiting for that X-class flare.

Yes, a G2 storm as predicted by spaceweather.com yesterday is in progress, although it arrived a bit earlier than thought:

Quote AURORAS LIKELY THIS WEEK: High latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras on the night of Oct. 8th. That's when a co-rotating interaction region (CIR) is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. CIRs are transition zones between fast- and slow-moving solar wind streams. Solar wind plasma piles up in these regions, producing density gradients and shock waves that do a good job of sparking geomagnetic storms.
    Here's the recent Presto Alert:

    Quote Issued: 2015 Oct 07 0858 UTC
    roduct: documentation at http://www.sidc.be/products/presto
    #--------------------------------------------------------------------#
    # FAST WARNING 'PRESTO' MESSAGE from the SIDC (RWC-Belgium) #
    #--------------------------------------------------------------------#
Major geomagnetic storm in progress (Kp=6) due to the expected arrival of
the compression region preceding a fast speed solar wind stream from a
coronal hole. The situation is expected to last about 48h.

They say that there are auroras everywhere here, I just don't see any from this light pollution.
I wonder if I should go out in the dark and see some, it's just almost below freezing here during nightime now.

Illustrating the practical effects of solar activity:

Both images below show data communications on 10 MHz in the HF radio band. The first image shows normal solar/ionospheric conditions. Notice the clear traces giving readable signals.

The second shows how the signals break up and spread as the ionosphere literally "wobbles around" under the influence of the sun's extra activity.

The traces are examples of amateur scientists' observation and study of the ionosphere. This sort of work would soon detect HAARP activity if it did what so many folks believe it does, but anyway...

OK, so this level of solar activity doesn't actually have any impact on most people's day-to-day life. I just thought these traces were a nice example of the real-world effects of what all the colourful bar charts, graphs and solar images in this thread just hint at.

Retuning sunspot 2423, now numbered 2434, has produced three m1.1 flares in the past 14 hours:

    From spaceweather.com (not updated yet):

Quote CHANCE OF FLARES: Growing sunspot AR2434 is crackling with minor C-class solar flares, and it could produce a stronger eruption. The sunspot's 'beta -gamma' magnetic field harbors energy for M-class solar flares. NOAA forecasters estimate a 30% chance of such an eruption on Oct. 15th.

Sunspot 2334 is having a tempertantrum as it passes over the western edge of the Earth-facing Sun producing 2 eruptions today:

    M1.9 peaking at 03:36 UTC
    M2.5 peaking at 12:01 UTC

It's possible that it will produce more M-flares before it passes on to the other side of the disc.

And it was only minor G1 storm...

Solar storm knocks out flight control systems in Sweden

"Stockholm: Swedish aviation officials say a solar storm has knocked out their air traffic control systems, prompting them to shut down the country's airspace for more than an hour.

The civil aviation authority said the solar storm Wednesday created disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field, which affected radar installations in southern Sweden. It wasn't immediately clear whether other countries also were affected.

Agency spokesman Per Froberg said flights disappeared from radar screens in Swedish air traffic control towers during the blackout, which lasted about an hour until 5:30 p.m. Froberg said it was unclear why the impact was so severe, adding the last time something similar happened in Sweden was in 1999.

He couldn't say how many flights were affected, but the country's main airports listed dozens of delays."

I would love to see the data on this chart cross-referenced to what was actively in progress at CERN, at the same time-and-day. However, I don't know how to find the dashboard history published at the CERN website, here.

If any of the members commenting in this thread know how to cross-reference this data, I would be most appreciative to see how it does, or doesn't show any cause-and-effect.

If any member has any interest in investigating an alternate theory of how our sun works, I invite them to listen to this brief video from the "Thunderbolts Project":

Upon review of the above video, one might see why I believe there may be a connection between some solar flairs and the activity at CERN.

From the Free Energy And Free Thinking site:

    The Electric Sun

Quote The Sun’s Corona is Millions of degrees according to academic scientists.
Do you see just how confused these folks are? Their reason for believing this absurdity is they think x-rays from the Sun are generated thermally, which they are not.
So-called electrons are accelerated through the Sun’s so-called EM “field” to create so-called “x-rays”.... (this is the alternative academic explanation using academic language).

    - See more at: http://www.feandft.com/the-electric-....3l3e08u8.dpuf

Quote “Scientists today state that the Sun is a gigantic atomic nuclear furnace radiating a tremendous amount of heat to the satellite planets each second. The temperature at its surface is said to be thousands of degrees (5800 K), and the internal temperature (and Corona) are supposedly in the millions of degrees.
However, it is unexplainable how superheated gases can act magnetically. For it is an elementary fact of physics that a substance loses its so-called magnetism when heated!
Since astronomers have definitely recorded magnetic effects upon the Sun, we have a direct conflict between the Sun’s true nature and the suggested temperature.
This conflict only indicates that the Sun is not the superheated mass of gases that scientists think it is, but rather a cool body as Herschel (Viktor Schauberger and Rudolph Steiner) said it was…

The plasma loops on the sun look to me as if they are following the neat magnetic lines of force, rather than the erratic shapes of sparks.

The fact that the magnetic poles of the sun swap each cycle and a new cycle is deemed to have started when sunspots start appearing with the opposite magnetic properties tends to support this.

If solar physicists have got this wrong, why would they all want to cover it up? New, young professional or amateur solar physicists would be happy to confirm a new solar model - and take the credit! Such a discovery would likely bring all sorts of new understandings for the sun-earth interactions.

I see no reason for this sort of discovery to be 'suppressed'.

    Thanks Nick,

I don't believe anyone is suggesting the Electric Universe Model is being "suppressed", other than the hypothesis is being rejected by the mainstream scientific community. Historically, any time a new idea is presented that shatters the structure of the existing model, there is an outcry of denial from the establishment. This is the "suppression" of which you speak.

I invite any member interested in discovering a new understanding of the nature of our universe to spend some time listening to the wealth of videos that can be found at this website:

    ThunderboltsProject: https://www.youtube.com/user/ThunderboltsProject

For those members with no understanding of which I speak, here's an introduction video that explains the Electric Universe Model; well worth the time investment:
