M2.7 flare from that active sunspot!

Quote SolarHam: Isolated moderate flare activity continues around Sunspot 1875. The large active region produced a moderate M2.7 solar flare peaking at 20:53 UTC. Sunspot 1875 is currently in a perfect geoeffective position for Earth directed CMEs. Stay tuned to SolarHam.com for the most up to date space weather news and information. Image by EVE.

Holy macaroni, Sun is alive again! M9.3 flare, that's almost X-class! Also a faint CME.

The double peaked solar max cycle might be true after all, I think that the Sun has still a lot to offer. The Earth facing quiet lasted for two years and now it's over.

Wow! So far, in the past fews days we've had several M-class flares:

    -from sunspot 1875
    Oct 22: M1.0 at 00:21 UTC
    M1 at 15:20 UTC
    M4.2 at 21:20 UTC
    Oct 23: M 2.7 at 20:53 UTC
    M 1.4 at 23:43 UTC
    M 3.1 at 00:08 UTC

And this morning sunspot 1877 has kicked in:

    M 9.3 at 00:31 UTC

    From spaceweather.com:

Quote CHANCE OF STORMS: Earth's magnetic field is about to receive a glancing blow from three CMEs observed leaving the Sun between Oct. 20th and 22nd. Forecasting models suggest that the three clouds merged en route to Earth, and their combined impact could trigger a polar geomagnetic storm on Oct. 24-25. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras.
Quote SOLAR FLARE! Solar activity is high. On October 24th at 00:30 UT, Earth-facing sunspot AR1877 erupted, producing a powerful M9-class solar flare. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the blast:

A flash of extreme UV radiation from the flare ionized Earth's upper atmosphere and created a brief HF radio blackout on the sunlit (Pacific) side of the planet. The blackout has since subsided. A CME might be en route to Earth, but we're still waiting on SOHO coronagraph data to confirm this possibility.

Meanwhile, more flares are in the offing. Two large sunspots, AR1875 and AR1877, have 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic fields that harbor energy for strong eruptions. NOAA forecasters estimate a 40% chance of M-flares and a 5% chance of X-flares during the next 24 hours.

So, where do we stand on the sun's poles flipping? I saw one report while the govt was shut down that the sun's poles had flipped, but only the one. Does anyone know?

they rolled the satellite to cool the sun facing side, someone watching thought it was the sun rolling around...

it's a big ball of gas, the holes spew negative ions, the sun flares blast out protons...
