It's a white Christmas Melburnians could have done without as
hailstones the size of lemons have caused widespread damage across the city.

Strong winds, high water levels give cause for concern in the north of the Netherlands

    Wednesday 04 January 2012

Water levels in northern parts of the country are so high following the heavy
rain and strong winds that water boards are opening emergency flood plains
in some areas, the Volkskrant reports on Wednesday.

Officials in Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe are monitoring events closely as
water levels reach a 14-year high, Nos television said.

Pumps are operating round the clock in the three northern provinces to shift
excess water to the sea or IJsselmeer lake. And according to weather forecaster
weeronline.nl, the stormy weather will continue until at least Thursday afternoon.

    Museum

Water levels are so high in the city of Groningen that the lowest floor of the
Groninger Museum may have to be evacuated, news agency ANP said.
This section of the museum is currently hosting an exhibition of clothing
    by fashion designer Azzedine Alaia.

The museum is on the water, which is currently lapping just seven
centimetres below the windows, ANP said.

The local Groningen water board has also set up an emergency team
of 90 people to monitor vulnerable dykes throughout the province.

The strong winds have also led to disrupted ferry services to the Wadden Islands

Update (Strong winds, high water levels give cause for concern in the north of the Netherlands)

    http://www.dutchnews.nl/news/archive..._heavy_rai.php
** Also two videos on website **

    Thursday 05 January 2012

Storm force winds and heavy rain battered northern parts of the Netherlands on Thursday
as weather bureau KNMI issued a code orange weather warning.

Winds of up to 110 kph hit northern coastal areas, and there was considerable damage
inland as gales brought down trees and damaged buildings.

At least 30 flights were cancelled at Schiphol airport because of the strong winds and
there was considerable disruption on rush-hour trains.

Ferry services to the Wadden islands have also been cancelled or delayed and Friesland
closed most of its inland waterways to shipping.

Some roads have been closed because of falling trees and other debris, and part of the
A73 in Limburg was closed for a time because of a mud stream.

    Dykes

Meanwhile, some 80 people were evacuated from the Groningen village of Tolbert because
a dyke is threatening to break through.

Oil and gas company Nam has closed down two gas extraction plants which are also
    located on the polder.

The heavy rain over the past few days has led water boards in Groningen to open up
emergency flood plains in several places. Although there is no cause for alarm, officials
said, some dykes have been reinforced.

    Flooding

On Thursday morning, officials decided to open two nature reserves up to excess water in
an effort to stop parts of Groningen, Hoogezand and Winschoten flooding, Nos television
    said.

Officials throughout Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe are monitoring events closely as
water levels reach a 14-year high, Nos television said.

Pumps are operating round the clock in the three northern provinces to shift excess water
to the sea or IJsselmeer lake.

In Dordrecht, south of Rotterdam, officials have issued 4,000 sandbags to try to stop the
city centre river breaking its banks, Nos television reports.

    January 15, 2012 – ANTARTICA -

A strong and shallow series of earthquakes have erupted near the remote South Shetland
Islands region of Antarctica on Sunday, experts from the U.S. Geological Survey said. The
earthquakes in the intense tectonically-activated series measured a 6.6 magnitude, followed
by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake and 5.1 and 5.6 aftershocks. The epicenter of the
earthquakes was at various depths of from one kilometer (0.62 miles) to 14 km (9.2 miles)
below the earth’s surface and some 464 kilometers west of Coronation Island in distance.
No destructive tsunami was created, according to the U.S. NOAA warning center. The
earthquake series is worrisome because it’s further evidence of what I have been warning
about for over the past 6 months, that the Southern hemisphere, particularly around the
periphery of Antarctic, is shows increasing signs of seismic destabilization. On January 12,
there was a swarm of five moderate earthquakes which erupted south of Africa- the
strongest of which was a 5.3 and a 5.5. On January 13, the South Sandwich Islands, north
of Antarctica, was hit with a 5.1, and 5.2. On January 14 the region was struck again with a
5.0 earthquake and another 4.9 on January 15th. Not only are earthquakes increasing along
the southern polar region but in November of 2011, the Tasmania’s Antarctic Climate and
Ecosystem centre found that the South Ocean was storing more heat than any other ocean
on the planet. The shape of the earth, a mal-formed spheroid, whose center of gravity is
becoming increasing displaced by the turbulent shifting of the planet’s mass due to a wave of
strong earthquakes that have rattled the planet over the last 7 years. These large mega-
thrust earthquakes are exacting a terrible toll of stress on the planet’s angular momentum.
In 2004, the planet suffered a devastating 9.1 mega-thrust earthquake in the Indian Ocean
near the Sunda Strait. In February of 2010, Chile was rocked by a 8.8 magnitude earthquake
and in March of 2011, Japan was similarly hit with a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami.
In April of 2011, the European satellite Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation
Explorer, or GOCE released a detailed map of Earth’s gravity field. (See quakes and mounting
    stress increasing around South Pole)

    Name: images (1).jpg

The digital 3-dimensional model shows planet Earth’s dimensional gravity signature is now
severely deformed and this is increasing mechanical stresses within the planet’s interior-
which will further aggravate thermal gradient. As the planet is generating more energy in
rotation to do the same work under greater resistant pressure- it is adding an additional
burden to a stressed system that is already in dire need of a catastrophic correction. The
fact that Earth has oceans to create tidal budge on its sides and absorb massive earthquake
seismic shocks may be the only thing that has saved the planet thus far from shifting over.
Earth’s unbalanced model is further compounded by two additional factors. The planet’s
magnetic field is degrading from a magnetic polar migration and subsequent reversal and the
disproportionate weight of the Antarctica ice-cap has created a wobble or precession in the
planet’s spin, which has recently fluctuated according to some scientists. Throw in the
planet’s angle of inclination of 23° degrees and you have an unstable system that is bobbling
along in space as it spins in tilted and trembling fashion. If any more large earthquakes strike
the planet in the near future, her stability will erode further and the dangers of a
catastrophic crustal correction becomes more likely, similar to what has already happened on
Uranus, which is sitting on its side, and Mercury (with a magnetic field that is already 150
times weaker than Earth’s) whose magnetic field has also slipped and is experiencing an
unexplained thermal anomaly at the southern pole. All of these factors are increasing
tectonic-plate stresses and earthquake activity on a very dangerous region of the planet
that is already tinged by deep submarine volcanism.

Japan Snowstorm Kills 52, Crushes Steel Bridge

Heavy snowfall has crippled much of Japan’s western coast,
killing more than 50 people and injuring nearly 600. The worst
snowstorm in six years has dumped more than 10 feet of snow
in the hardest-hit regions, causing at least one bridge to collapse
and forcing school closures across the region.

An avalanche today buried three people for more than an hour near
a hot springs in Akita Prefecture in northwest Japan. The women
were later found unconscious but survived.

Western Japan has been battered by one snowstorm after another
since the beginning of the year, overwhelming cash-strapped cities
struggling to keep up with cleanup efforts. In the Niigata Prefecture,
officials said nearly half of their 30 cities had run out of funds set
aside snow removal. Further north in the Aomori Prefecture,
the government had already applied for additional funds from
    Tokyo, after draining its budget.

Residents, frustrated by the slow response, have taken it upon
themselves to clean up the winter mess, resulting in deadly
consequences. Nearly all the storm-related deaths have been
a direct result of snow removal. Meanwhile, in Nagano, the weight
of all the snow proved to be too much for a 310-foot steel bridge.
It collapsed early this week, although no one was injured.

The Japan Meteorological Agency forecasts more snowfall in the next 24 hours.

The level of the Amazonas River in Peru in the last few weeks has increased from its normal level of 110.42 meters above sea to 117 meters and are threatening to flood the southern Iquitos region, Peru's Regional National Defense Office said on Wednesday.

Iquitos regional defense chief Robert Falcon said the level is expected to reach 117.46 meters this week, surpassing the river's critical level of 117 meters registered last week and prompting authorities to issue an alert for the risk of flooding.
4000 m below the Amazon river flows what seems to be a huge aquifer named Rio Hamza from west to east

so the worst case scenario is a 300 km wide waterway splitting the northern part of South America along the Equator

the size of france makes it sound pretty cool..

    http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/...amid-downpours

More than 1500 people have been evacuated from their homes in NSW as floodwaters covering an area the size of France sweep across the state.

The Warragamba Dam - currently at 93 per cent capacity - is expected to spill overnight for the first time in 14 years, with the weather bureau predicting increased rainfall in the catchment area into Friday.

Western Sydney looks set to escape with just moderate flooding, despite 75 per cent of NSW either under water or threatened by floodwaters as the state buckles under its heaviest rains since the 1920s.

In the southern NSW town of Cooma, emergency service workers were on standby on Thursday in case two of its creeks burst their banks.

About 900 people in homes and businesses in low-lying areas had already been evacuated since early on Thursday morning, State Emergency Service spokesman Phil Campbell told AAP.

Another 60 people had been evacuated in the central west town of Cowra, while 600 residents in the Southern Tablelands city of Goulburn left their homes as a rain-swollen river rose rapidly.

Major flooding was developing around Queanbeyan, with 400 people on standby for possible evacuation, Mr Campbell said.

He said an evacuation warning was in place around the Hawkesbury area, where large swathes of land were expected to be swamped by floodwaters when the Warragamba Dam spilled some time on Thursday night.

Lighter than forecast rainfall since 9am meant the spill was likely to occur later than the original prediction of between 8pm and 10pm, a spokesperson for Sydney Catchment Authority told AAP.

When the dam spills the water will flood into the already swollen Murrumbidgee, Hawkesbury and Nepean rivers.

Local residents have been advised to keep children home from school on Friday to avoid problems associated with what is likely to be moderate flooding in the Nepean Hawkesbury Valley.

SES Incident Controller for Western Sydney Keith Fitzgerald said it was highly likely this flooding would result in the closure of the bridges at Windsor and North Richmond.

"People should think seriously about keeping their children home from school and about changing their normal pattern of commuting," Mr Fitzgerald told reporters on Thursday.

He also warned residents against complacency, saying flood-threatened residents in western Sydney could put themselves and their families at risk if they failed to heed warnings.

"The main concern I have here in Sydney is complacency," Mr Fitzgerald said.

"Folk will continue to try to go about their day-to-day business and in doing so put their families and themselves at risk."

Since the rains began, the SES has carried out 13 flood rescues, including three on Thursday, one of which involved a family and their seven dogs near Coolamon.

    Black Panther Hi

I have had an amateur fascination in sinkholes for a while, but something about this picture just doesn't quite sit right with me. The left hand side seems to be on a 35° degree angle as if its the bottom of a steep hill or something has punched its way through, but without leaving any debris. Its not helped that a search via different search engines (english language) can only find the same low res image. I can not find any news reference's in either Cymraeg or English that comes even close to a mention. The earliest mention of this is from the 14th and not a single picture since? Maybe someone from Sverige / Sweden has some info & footage? I have also noticed the below exact same comment on many different sites, including non other than infamous Jason Lucas GLP.

Quote April 16, 2012 – SWEDEN – It looks like something taken straight from a horror movie. An enormous hole leading to hell, some would say. But this is not a movie. This is a real and dangerous phenomenon. New shocking images clearly show the enormous pit in Sweden is expanding. The 200 foot wide open pit is called the “Fabiangropen’ (Fabian pit) and is in the Malmberget area is located at Gällivare, 75km from Kiruna, Sweden. As you can see on the map, it is in the northern regions of Sweden. Due to presence of many orebodies, mining at Malmberget is conducted at different levels at 600m, 815m and 1,000m. The mining company LKAB has now taken new pictures of the pit. In the pictures you see the new Fabian pit which has expanded during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday in the former cavity full width. The pit is square and 150×150 meters high. This is naturally very bad news for people who live close to this giant sinkhole and many are afraid and also annoyed because of the loud noises. According to the locals sometimes the tremor around here can last up to 45 minutes!

From what I gathered, this is a mining pit that was a square to start with.

One can see a mining drift in one of the picture of the pit still showing a square corner.

It seems that one side of the pit collapsed overnight.

Not a real sinkhole to start with.

I'm not a sinkhole expert, but just came across
this on this website as I mentioned before:

Bosnia Snow Surprises After Unusually Hot Weeks

"SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina -- Sunbathing one day,
snowstorm the next: Bosnians are getting whiplash from
the latest crazy weather to hit the Balkans.

Weeks after Bosnians had stashed away their winter clothes
and their memories of last winter's unbearably heavy snow,
residents had to drag out the shovels Monday after waking
up to a blanket of snow in the middle of an otherwise unusually
    hot May.

Some 50 remote villages in a mountainous area near the Bosnian
capital of Sarajevo lost power due to the snow.

The unseasonal weather followed a week of summer-like temperatures
with 27 C (80.6 Fahrenheit) registered in Sarajevo on Saturday.

Temperatures hit 5 Celsius (41 Fahrenheit) on Monday, causing
traffic jams as people struggled to get to work.

The cold spell is forecast to last until at least the middle
of the week, when the snow is expected to be replaced by heavy rain."

Whatever happened to that warning about summer Arctic Sea ice disappearing by 2012?

By Robert On May 30, 2012
    http://iceagenow.info/2012/05/happen...ppearing-2012/

Arctic Sea Ice Gone in Summer Within Five Years?”shouted the National Geographic headline just five years ago.

“An already relentless melting of the Arctic greatly accelerated this summer—a sign that some scientists worry could mean global warming has passed an ominous tipping point,” wrote Seth Borenstein on December 12, 2007.

“One scientist even speculated that summer sea ice could be gone in five years,” warned Borenstein.

“At this rate,” said NASA climate scientist Jay Zwally, “the Arctic Ocean could be nearly ice-free at the end of summer by 2012, much faster than previous predictions.”

“The Arctic is often cited as the canary in the coal mine for climate warming,” said Zwally. “Now as a sign of climate warming, the canary has died. It is time to start getting out of the coal mines.”

It will be interesting so see how Mr Borenstein spins the latest news out of the Arctic, that “the heaviest polar ice in more than a decade could postpone the start of offshore oil drilling in the Arctic Ocean until the beginning of August.”

“The heaviest polar ice in more than a decade.”

So much for Mr Zwally’s ice-free Arctic summer. I hope his canary didn’t freeze to death.

Thanks to Byron Dawes for pointing out the National Geographic article.

    not on the usg reports

    http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/qua...e-northern-nsw

Two earthquakes have struck in northern NSW, and have been felt in Tamworth, Gunnedah and Coonabarabran and in areas more than 100km away.

A 4.2 magnitude quake struck at Lake Keepit, northeast of Gunnedah, at 9.31pm (AEST) on Friday, Geoscience Australia says.

It had a depth of 17km.

A similar sized earthquake nearby struck about two minutes earlier, the Australian Seismological Centre says.

The centre's director Kevin McCue said these were the first earthquakes greater than magnitude 4 to strike inland northern NSW since December 1969, when a magnitude 5 quake struck near Coonabarabran.

Mr McCue said the Friday night quakes were felt as far as Coonabarabran, 120km from the epicentre, as well as in Tamworth and Gunnedah.

"I was talking to people up there. All the glass was jiggling in cupboards," he told AAP.

"It's unusual to have an earthquake of this size."

He said it's unlikely the quakes caused structural damage to homes in major towns, but some may have cracked walls or chimneys.

Twitter accounts have come in from Tamworth, Manilla and Gunnedah.

Seismologist Dr Michael Phillips, who lives 5km from Coonabarabran, said his wife Claire Milton, a doctor, and their eight-year-old son Max felt the earthquakes in their farmhouse.

"They heard and felt it," he told AAP.

"The china in the cabinet was rattling and my son's bunk bed was banging on the wall.

"The whole house was rattling and shaking - it lasted 30 seconds."

Dr Phillips, who is also a physicist, said the size of the earthquakes had overwhelmed his seismological measuring equipment.

"It was too much for the instrument," Dr Phillips said, adding it was likely that one of the earthquakes was an aftershock.
