Wow, Astrid, I love this. So many poor people live in huts like that in Central America as well, although fewer here in Costa Rica than in the other countries, like Honduras and Nicaragua. They could really benefit from it.

The question is how to distribute the idea to those areas.

I grew up in S.E. Asia, and have seen what life in slums and shanty towns is like. This bottle light idea is so simple, and will take on like wildfire!

I'm forwarding the video to all I know. All it takes is a few people to make some bottles up and show how it's done- the rest will take care of itself.

There is a much more expensive version that I saw on a home repair show that uses natural light in a bendable skylight. It's very bright and would work well in countries like America. I just had two skylights done away with due to leaks though, so I am a bit weary of them, but free light is free light if you can just keep the water out.

The Philippines holds a very special place in my heart but the extreme poverty and corruption there saddens me and annoys me intensely.

That is such a simple and clever idea. Brilliant! (sorry, I couldn't resist the pun)
I assume the chlorine (probably household bleach) is used to prevent algae growing inside the bottle.

I would like to propose a minor change to the design. I suggest adding some phosphorescent chemical so the bottle provides light in the evening as well as in daylight.

There might be an issue with the chlorine and phosphorescent chemical inter-reacting. I invite any chemists among us to comment. StateOfTheHeart, are you reading this?

There is probably also an issue with the bottles being rapidly degraded by Ultra-Violet light and the extreme heat of a hot "tin" roof in the tropical heat. It would be a pain to have to replace the bottle-light every year or two.

...phosphorescence occurs because the phosphorescent chemical absorbs energy and slowly releases it in the form of light.

As I understand it, this is for using it during the day as it works with the sun light, right? So it's a very simple solution for places and homes that need artificial light during the day but they still need to use regular bulbs at night.
