The two girls walking down the street are 'trying' to make a statement of "I'm a rebel". Trying too hard to fit in...
Way way back in the 70's in high school we all wore Levi jeans with holes and patches. We weren't in fashion back then but rather from the poor side of town.

Talk about 'trying to fit in.

On the subway yesterday, two young girls got on the subway, around fifteen? They were very loud, banging on the seats and windows, keeping beat to their rap music blaring from a speaker. It was an extremely rude rap about sex. They were dressed like pirates is the only way to describe it - bandanas, torn cloths, black lip stick. They serenaded the train for a few stops before getting off, by which time everyone was very glad to see them go.

On the way out they made fun of a Muslim family. Calling them slang terms I have not heard before and can't remember anyway.

Across from me sat a very nice young black couple. Subways are funny places where a lot of silent posturing happens. These two had checked me out and the guy stared me down with his tough guy stare - I only smiled and turned away. I recount that because we had both decided we were okay - hard to describe better, it all happens without words.

When the rapper wannabees left the black guy said loud enough for me to hear, 'white trash', with a straight face while looking at me. I agreed with a nod and a grin. 'White trash' I intoned. And we all had a laugh...

No is right. The incident would have been caught on video, posted on Facebook and you would have been widely denounced as a racist. Next, your employer would have either fired you or you would be forced to leave, under pressure.

Just watched the rocket launch, man is that so cool! Watching it from about 180 miles away and you can easily see the rocket. Something may have gone wrong during the separation but I don't know. Surely we'll know in a bit.
