Hello friends, kind of miss the party due to a sore arm, hard to type! Too much cutting with a buck saw. I forget that I am a 62 year old women. Happy birthday village!!!

OK, party has been cleaned up, and other than the 3 members and 11 guests still hanging out, hoping for a ride to the airport, everyone has gone. Everyone left with a 5 gallon bucket of guacamole, a peace sign pendant, sore jaws from laughing, and sore feet from dancing. Bill's puppy, Mara, ate the famous hat, so, no more betting the "I'll eat my hat, if..." thing until Bill gets a new one. (I'd recommend one made of woven noodles, just in case.)

OK, everyone meet back here at 6:00 am, and we'll go wingsuit base-jumping. Until then, I'll leave you with a moment of clarity.

Any password used on this forum on or before August 31 might have been stolen when the forum was hacked then. As Ilie recommends here, please change any such password (regardless of where you got the password from initially.)

There is a hacker out there who has gained access to our passwords. If you don't change yours, there is a chance that he will post in your name. Go to settings (top right), then down the left side My Settings/My account/edit email & password. Choose a safe password of at least eight characters mixing digits, punctuation, upper and lower case. Otherwise we may get disruptive posts from transiten.

You can take your time, as most people will have done it already by now. No panic

We don't know whether the hacker got the hashed passwords or not. They could have; we don't know their real motive.

Like almost all other websites, we don't store members actual passwords, but rather an encrypted (hashed) form of them. With a few days or weeks work a hacker with the right computer equipment can expect to crack the majority of such hashed passwords, and find the real password behind them.

The most common problem comes when a person uses the same or a similar password on both a website that gets hacked (such as we did) and on their email account. Hackers can get both (1) the hashed passwords, and (2) the associated email address, for those using the hacked site. Hackers will then decrypt as many of the hashed passwords as they can, and then attempt to use those passwords (and various similar variants) on the associated email account. If they get in, they then look at the email stored there to see what bank(s) that person uses. They then use the password reset facility of the bank (which typically sends email to the users email account) to gain control of those people's bank accounts. It beats minimum wage work.

In short, if you use the same or similar passwords on any of your email or bank accounts as you use here -- change both, to something unique per account -- real soon!

And even if your Avalon password was distinctly different, change it anyway if you have not already done so since August 31, 2013. We don't want members Avalon accounts stolen either.
