My great-grandmother would talk to me about growing up in the wild Mississippi countryside in the first decades of the 1900s. The thrill of seeing a car for the first time and the arduous work of subsistence living and animal husbandry. She said that when they slaughtered a goat, they would have to sneak up on it and club it without the goat having any idea it was coming. She said they if the goat was frightened it would ruin the meat, and make it taste bitter. The fear would turn it bad. That always struck me. I guess it might differ by the animal. Who knows....I've never slaughtered my own food.

I don't know the state of the cow, but with enough salt, fresh rosemary, oregano, thyme, coriander and mint, the burgers I made just kicked ass.

That makes me think of Upton Sinclair's book "The Jungle". How they would slaughter the pigs as described in that book still turns me off from eating pork, or as PL would say "cousin".

A guy I grew up with and rode horses with worked in a slaughter/meat packing plant for a while and acquired a zoonoses animal disease and almost died. Took him forever to recover from it. It's one of the reasons I originally became a vegetarian.

Ulli, those little blue flowers look like grape hyacinths. In New Hampshire, I had them planted around a white birch tree with true red tulips. Was just remembering them yesterday.

A friend of mine came over recently to visit. I served coffee with organic, raw-unpasteurized milk from free range cows. She said she was lactose intolerant and the milk would upset her stomach. But said she'd try it anyway. Well it didn't upset her stomach. She asked me what kind of milk do you buy? So I told her, she replied you're kidding....
No, I said the milk is from happy cows.

What a legacy Louis Pasteur left - vaccines and pasteurization .

I am presently at Flashlight house, in the USA, and we went to the burrial of her husband yesterday. She lost him last November but the ground was too frozen to burry him, so he stayed in a fridge all winter. Mini Flash is with me because she has known both since her birth.

It was quite emotional. The sailors where there playing trumpet since he was a veteran, and my friend got the USA flag given to her. Then each of us told something about her husband that we appreciated or things we have done with him. Mini Flash started the telling, she has guts.

Today we rested most of the day, then went to shop at Macy's and we all bought some jewelry and Mini also bought some shoes. So everybody is happy. Women + emotions = shopping! lollllllll (retail therapy as Flashlight says)

Tonight Flashlight (my friend) brought us to eat in a nice restaurant (she knows her environment) but on my invite.

We are returning to Montréal tomorrow, Mini and I.

This was our here and now.
