New Eruptions at Rincon de la Vieja in Costa Rica

It has been almost exactly 14 years since the last eruptive period for Rincón de la Vieja in Costa Rica, but it looks like the volcano might be awakening from its break. Last Thursday (Feb. 22), the volcano experienced two small explosions in the early morning. Seismic records suggest the volcano also had small explosions on Feb. 19 and 20, according to the OVSICORI report for Feb. 25 (PDF). None of the explosions caused any damage to anything near the volcano and there are no reports of ash fall other than in the crater itself. These explosions are very similar in style to the September 2011 explosions that were like phreatic in nature — that is, not new magma but superheated water generated the explosions. Of course, it is likely that new magma intruding the volcano is the heat source for the water, but these explosions could precede a new magmatic eruption by months or years (or lead to nothing at all). The volcano sits within a national park in Costa Rica and after these explosions, the National Emergency Commission has declared the crater area off-limits to visitors.


The last major eruption from Rincón de la Vieja was in 1966, when it produced at VEI 3 event that generated pyroclastic flows. All the way back in circa 1820 B.C., the volcano produced the Río Blanco tephra from a larger VEI 4 eruption. The summit of the volcano hosts a small crater lake (see above), which could potentially add to the initial explosivity of any eruption as the water interacts with erupting magma. There are also abundant mudpots and springs within the national park as well, attesting to the persistent geothermal activity in the area. This geothermal activity is the reason why the Costa Rican government is looking to build a 200 MW geothermal energy plant in the National Park as well.

1InMany...Your Tree Experience...It Is YOURS, something Very Special going on, imho.
My Indian Hill experience in '07 brought out a tremendous amount of Spiritual Connection to the Trees...I would touch certain ones and a downward vibration would come through me, I could see the Spirits alive in the bark and contrasts of light playing on the trunks, holographic images would come alive in the upper spans of the leaves and limbs and branches and sway and dance and some would come towards me.
imho...that Tree is alive with Spirit of tellings of that land where You are..it is connecting to You and You are an aid to the transformation of Energy ...in other words, You are seeing Love form the Tree and it is responding to Yours...something very good is there for You and the Spirits. Talk to it/them in Your Own Ways in Whatever Way You are Drawn...Enjoy It : )

Great music! I have trouble finding new music to listen to on my own...get stuck in the same old ruts...these vids have been fannnnntastic! Just wanted to say thanks

meeredas, on the head pressure...I would have to say it is closer to pressure from the outside, but it is not pressure against my head it is more like pressure through my head...but from the outside.

eaglespirit, thanks for sharing the tree story. I was taken aback mostly because what was happening did not appear spiritual at first. it looked very...mechanical? like pixels maybe? A couple of days ago I thought to take a video of the tree when the red wasn't there for comparison. I took 3 quick vids. I'll be darned, the red is in one of them again and I didn't even notice it. I'm a little afraid of it, but I suppose that is from having blinders on most of my life. If the birds love the tree, I'm gonna try to connect. If the birds do not love the tree, I'm asking for more advice ) That sounds like a plan. If you are getting the sense that it is meant to be something special for me...I'm all in. Fear to the wayside, I say

Yeah, it does feel like that sorta...like one of the sweatbands worn in the 80s...not too tight, just there. I feel it now. I felt it on and off for about a week, then nothing for a couple of days, it's there again this morning. Can you expand at all on the reiki attunement/guide experience? I'd love to hear more about it!

The birds say ... I meet the tree today up close and personal. The birds, and, well...a flash of white light in the top of the tree this morning. On a cloudy, overcast morning that is another sign I can't explain away. Certainly caught my attention. My goal is to not think through this experience
