    Polly!!!

There she is, from screen shots of the videos released by ULPGC:

These views, although not very impressive and probably weeded out of the "good stuff," have been hoped for ever since Ramon Margalef and its Liropus 2000 were rumored to visit the area... that's been a very long wait!

That's what all the fuss is about.

Here is my translation of the ULPGC press release:

ULPGC scientists prove that life has returned to the Mar de Las Calmas but the volcanic center remains active

    16/03/2012

Scientists at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, aboard the research vessel chartered by the university to campaign in the Sea of Calm (El Hierro) have filmed the submarine volcanic cone by means of a submarine robot from the Atlantic Explorer vessel and was the first camera to sit atop the cone of the volcano.

Scientists say there is no tremor in the water, but you can see a "shower of glowing stars" at the mouth of the volcano, as the central volcano remains active and which surrounding water has been sampled at over 60 º C temperature. In the area, it also has been shown that marine life has come back near the volcano.

The campaign, called 2-ULPGC Guayota, involved researchers from GEOVOL (Land Group Volcanic Geology), the Division of Robotics and Computational Oceanography (IUSIANI University Institute of Intelligent Systems and Numerical Applications in Engineering) and IOCAG (Institute college of Oceanography and Global Change) - all of ULPGC - and in collaboration with the Jaume Almera Institute (CSIC) and the Oceanographic Centre of Canary (IEO).

The campaign takes place aboard the R/V Atlantic Explorer (QSTAR SLU) for the study of the underwater volcano of El Hierro and oceanographic involvement as well as observation and filming of the volcanic cone.

The results of the first images recorded are:

    - For the first time, images of the new undersea volcano which appeared near La Restinga (El Hierro) have been obtained from its southwestern flank and near the crater area (to 172 m)

-Both missions have shown that the main volcanic center is still active

    - Emerging from depths of about 120 m, shows the formation of convective hot jets reaching depths of about 40-60 m. At the outlet, on Tuesday the 13th, the ROV entered one of them and made several turns uncontrolled, while the sensor temperature increased sharply

    - Also from the same depths are generated pyroclastic projections about 40-50 m in height (ie the pyroclasts reach depths of 80-70 m), which rapidly form ballistic trajectories (parabolic) and fall under gravity. Some of these pyroclastic seem to be large (volcanic bombs type)

    - The dive, during Wednesday the 14th, to film the southwest flank of the main cone, shows that it has a steep slope and is formed mainly by large pyroclastics, some of which are similar to the hollow volcanic bombs that reach the surface in the months of November and December

    - Finally, at a depth of about 170m and under a rain of ash, a school of fish (amberjack possibly) living near the edge of the volcano. Also, confused with the ashes, is observed many small bodies and, closer to the surface, jellyfish.

The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria chartered a boat to facilitate scientific research in the sea of Restinga (El Hierro), in the area of the submarine volcano.

The Vice President for Research, Development and Innovation ULPGC, directed by Fernando Real, has coordinated the rental, from the QStar company, of the vessel Atlantic Explorer, which will perform 7 research cruises in three and a half months, from February 17 . The investigations are conducted by scientists from the Departments of Biology, Physics and Chemistry of the University Institutes of Oceanography and Global Change (IOCAG), Intelligent Systems and Numerical Applications in Engineering (SIANI) and Animal Health (IUSA), the Spanish Bank of Algae and research groups in Biological Oceanography, Physics and Satellite, Marine Chemistry, Robotics, Marine Ecology and Fisheries and geology, among others.

This is what I meant by the "Harmonic Tremor getting fluffier" in post # 1997:

The traces on the seismograms do not show much variations but the harmonic Tremor frequencies are beginning to fill up the space again, although the 0.59Hz strip of red intensity is still absent.

Now, thanks to "Wall-E", what I have suspected for quite a while -- that there is no direct correlation between Harmonic Tremor and the emission/ejection of volcanic materials per se (see post # 1915 and post # 1922) -- has been confirmed!

That, BTW, implies the circulation of magmatic material on its way to ejection... yet, that motion is not evidenced by a signature in the Harmonic Tremor either.

That simply means that all the high priests from the scientific community who derived their conclusion of the end of the volcanic activity at La Restinga from the look of the Harmonic Tremor flat line are going to have to find another credo.

Repsol authorised to search for oil off Canaries shores

Posted by Canaries News on March 16th, 2012

    (Archive image)

A Council of Ministers has today (Friday, 16th March 2012) authorised the company Repsol to make ‘spot checks’ in Canary Island waters to search for hydrocarbons (oil and gas). A spokesperson for the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism confirmed that Jose Manuel Soria agreed to the authorisations.

The surveys will be conducted over nine ‘grids’ in waters to the east of the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The authorisation has been rejected by the Regional Executive and the councils of both islands.

Surveys carried out show that about forty miles from the coast the Canary Islands, near the maritime border with Morocco, there are significant deposits in the neighboring country where exploration work has already begun.

José Manuel Soria has stressed the desirability of exploring these sites, which serve to reduce energy dependence on Spain and to provide the Canary Islands with ‘additional financial resources’.

Mr. Soria said the government “will not look the other way when opportunities are identified to reduce energy dependence” and “encourage the work of prospecting oil and gas” in Spain. In addition, he claims to have received information from Repsol that in the waters of the Canary Islands there is a “high probability” of finding oil “in quantity”.

    See Posts #1507, 1728 and 1791

There you have it: energy independence is not looked in the direction El Hierro is handling it... never mind "Free Energy"... no, it's computed in the direction of "more oil!"

Strongest so far (2.5 at 13:38):

    For the day:

Frequencies spectrogram, the vertical streaks indicate “events” (tremors/EQs) whereas the horizontal ones reflect volcanic/magmatic activity:
Quote From Wikipedia: A Harmonic tremor is a sustained release of seismic and/or infrasonic energy typically associated with the underground movement of magma and/or venting of volcanic gases from magma. Being a long-duration continuous signal from a temporally extended source, a volcanic tremor contrasts distinctly with transient sources of seismic radiation, such as tremors that are typically associated with earthquake and explosion.

Well, I guess the webcam operators have the weekend off or else they've gone off the ball and gone out to lunch/fiesta... 'cause it was busy at La Restinga today:

    Atlantic Explorer back to port...

Tall ship circling around the harbor entrance...

    ... bopping like a cork...

... till permission to dock granted...

    The name is "Aelva":

Then, Atlantic Explorer went back out for more Rock 'n Rolling...

... I guess the M. 2.5 W of La Restinga (SW El Pinar) shook her and her crew into going back out...

IGN posted GPS data (see post # 1997)... now, I am calling it deliberate obfuscation!

See, this is what I would call a "useful" display of GPS data; from an Iceland university via volcanocafe.wordpress.com:

Compared to this useless piece of colorful $><!t from IGN's GPS data page:

Hope the difference is crystal clear to anyone?

Aaaaahhhhh... memory, logic, rationality, ripe fruits of observations... where have you gone? Things of the past? Not to be appealed to?

Why am I asking the above?

    Because of this:

    Quote
[...] The variation in HT signal is often caused by changes in tide, wind, waves etc, external factors which have nothing linked to the eruption. However, a minimal HT is still present.

    [....]
    ... from Earthquake-report.com...

See, the quoted excerpt above, in general, is true (see post # 1202).

However, in the case of the CHIE station which is tweaked so as to not even jitter from a 6.7 quake in Siberia or a 6.9 quake in Japan (see posts # 1955 and 1991)...

...I'll let you gather the fruits of your own observations...

As far as I am concerned, it seems that ER is aligning with the official scientific authorities party credo of "over and done with the damn thing!"
