Continues to monitor and analyze real-time data.

The Steering Committee of Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk (PEVOLCA) met this afternoon in Tenerife, maintains the normal phase in green semaphore status and information to the population after an increase of seismic activity that has occurred in El Hierro since yesterday.

According to the findings of the Scientific Committee, which included INVOLCAN and IGN scientists, this is the only observable anomalous parameter, since no changes were observed in the surface deformation nor gas emissions. This seismicity occurs at a depth of about 20 km, although it began in the sea of ​​El Golfo, it has moved into the area of El Julan.

To make a correct interpretation of the process that gives rise to this seismicity, surveillance is continuing with analysis of real-time data obtained by the IGN Volcanic Monitoring System operating on El Hierro.

The Steering Committee of the Plan reminded that the official information output is from the communiqués of PEVOLCA that reflects the findings of scientists who are working directly in the study and evaluation of the data.

Apparently; Prof. SAGIYA, Takeshi of the Nagoya University has come out from under Nemesio's squashing thumb and is publishing his GPS results for the Canary islands.

What's that mean?

Just that El Hierro island is suddenly bulging following a slow rise during the past few months while horizontal displacements were steady null.

The data from the last few days indicate a sharp increase of all three components:

NS = North (+)-South (-)

EW = East (+)-West (-)

UD = Up (+)-Down (-)

Scale is in meters so that 0.02 m = 2 cm

Detect a'' significant'' deformation of the ground and rapid movements of magma

The Volcanic Instituite de Canarias (Involcan) today reported that there is a significant deformation of the ground detected on their GPS networks.

A statement issued by the Institute explains that "during the last two days there have been eastward horizontal displacement of 2 inches, of 3 inches to the north and a vertical elevation of 2 cm. These data clearly show a process of movement of magma underground much faster than those observed last year, reports the Involcan.

The source responsible for this deformation, according to Involcan, is in the center-west of the island, in the area called El Julan, coinciding with recent seismic activity.

For his part, the Director General of Security and Emergency of the Canary Islands, Juan Manuel Santana, report Wednesday June 27 at 12:30 pm, the conclusions of the Scientific Committee and Director of Civil Protection Plan Volcanic Risk (Pevolca) meeting today, due to recent earthquakes that are occurring on the island of El Hierro.

Volcanic activity semaphore raised to yellow in La Dehesa and El Julan

The Steering Committee of Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk (Pevolca) has decided this morning to raise the semaphore of information to the public to yellow in El Julan and La Dehesa, El Hierro. It also establishes the preemergence stage on alert in these areas because that is where there is more volcanic risk.

This decision is due to the increased earthquake activity occurring on the island since last Sunday. Scientists convinced the steering committee that the origin of this seismicity and the horizontal deformation observed, about 3 centimeters, can be caused by a magmatic process active at a depth of 20 kilometers.

The meeting was held by video conference between Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, with the Minister of Economy, Finance and Security, Javier Gonzalez Ortiz, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the presence of President of the Cabildo, the deputy representative of the Government, the general manager Security and Emergency and the scientific committee spokesman and Madrid general director of Civil Protection and Iron, in the presence of municipal and island representatives.
