Strongest so far (2.8 at 10:31):

    For the day:

Frequencies spectrogram, the vertical streaks indicate “events” (tremors/EQs) whereas the horizontal ones reflect volcanic/magmatic activity:

Refresh your browser to get the latest traces

The continuously changing scales keeps compressing the earlier graphs to the bottom and to the left!

How it's looking like now from Las Puntas de La Frontera:

Refresh your browser page to get the latest graphs and picture.

Following the count of EQs as shown by the red bars (≥ 2.0) there definitely is a subsiding of the overall seismic activity as the trend continues:

As for the location of the most recent EQs (red dots), they now seem to have random occurrences over the area:

    From Earthquake-Report.com:

Update 22/10 – 14:59 UTC: Joke Volta, the El Hierro resident reporting to Earthquake-Report.com, just returned from a visit to La Restinga (she lives in El Pinar) were she talked to the local fishermen. The fishermen told her that they have seen the Las Calmas Jacuzzi working again during the nightly hours (Puerto Naos longitude).

Update 22/10 – 15:26 UTC: The Ramon Margalef will arrive tomorrow at El Hierro. The exact calender is not known at the moment, but everyone hopes that the ROV cameras will finally resolve all hanging questions about the eruption.

For the moment, the oceanographic vessel is still moored in Santa Cruz de Tenerife:

    Picture of the ship

    DIARIOELHIERRO.ES, redacción (22/10/2011.

The "Ramon Margalef" ship of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), will arrive tomorrow, Sunday, 23, in El Hierro's water to develop its first scientific expedition in the investigation of volcanic phenomena which took place there.

In this sense, the ship replaces the Canarian Institute of Marine Science, Professor Ignacio Lozano, who since last Saturday, October 15, has been developing research and sampling of water, algae, dead fish and pyroclastic debris.

The new campaign will be developed under the scientific coordination of Andrea Brown, Director of Research and Technology of the Technological Institute of the Canaries, and shall comprise, in addition to members of the scientific committee of the Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk (Pevolca) the IEO, the Canarian Agency for Innovation and Development, the two universities Archipiéago and Canary Islands Oceanic Platform.

The main objective of the research will be launched in the coming days will define the extent possible the development of eruptive phenomena which took place under the Sea of Calm, conclusions that may allow the direction of Pevolca, to more accurately adjust the scenario in which the process is right now.

In this sense, measuring physico-chemical parameters of water, thanks to the robot submarine, ROV Liropus 2000, they could capture images of the area of the eruption, giving their exact location and morphology of the area.

The vessel "Ramon Margalef" to attempt to resolve questions about the eruption.

EFE / Santa Cruz de Tenerife:
The research vessel "Ramon Margalef" will arrive Sunday morning at El Hierro to sample and analyze the seabed in order to resolve "all questions" raised by scientists and help manage the crisis arising from the submarine volcanic eruption.

That is how it was regarded today in remarks to journalists by José Ignacio Díaz, the captain of "Ramon Margalef", the new ship of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) and Demetrio de Armas, vice president of Oceanography Centre at its headquarters in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands.

They detailed the characteristics of the ship, launched in Vigo in February this year, because of the technical stop that the "Ramon Margalef" made in the harbor of the capital of Tenerife before departing on his first scientific expedition to El Hierro and investigate the volcanic phenomena in the waters of the island.

Jose Ignacio Diaz said the ship, with twelve crew members and an equal number of scientists and technicians, has in principle no "return date" because it has come "to resolve all questions that can arise from the scientific committee."

Demetrio de Armas has expressed hope that the scientists will have "satisfactory" sampling results to help the scientific community and the management of the crisis facing the Civil Protection Plan to Volcanic Risk (Pevolca).

"Researchers will be sampling until they say they have solved or achieved the objectives set and can speculate with better knowledge of what may have happened there," said Jose Ignacio Diaz.

The work plan is to first make reconnaissance probes to identify where in the Sea of Calm, are the areas of greatest scientific interest and then send the ROV Liropus 2000 down there and the submarine robot will work in shifts of 12 hours.

This robot, which weighs 800 kilos and has come at a cost of 1.5 million euros, is capable of operating at depths of 2,000 meters and the probe will allow a three-dimensional topography of the seabed and assess temperature and salinity.

The advantage of the ROV, said Jose Ignacio Diaz, is that the scientific team is on board and will make decisions on the spot based on what they are seeing with this device, because the "Ramon Margalef" receives views from four front video cameras, one high resolution, and the investigator or agency can decide which sample to grab.

This robot, which is the fundamental tool to see what is happening on the seafloor, is controlled by fiber optic cable from the ship and its sensors are able to even assess how the currents are behaving in the study area.

Picture taken a few minutes ago in the eruption area where there is no visible bubbling at all. www.diarioelhierro.es.

    SPECIAL SEISMIC CRISIS - 23/10/2011 (11:36 pm)
AT THIS TIME, NO SIGNS OF A REVIVAL OF THE VOLCANO

El Pinar exclude any bubbling in area of eruption and calls for calm

The Security and Emergency Councillor of the City of El Pinar, Jesus Perez Quintero, told DAILY IRON there is no bubbling in La Restinga and discards, for the moment, a reactivation of the volcano.

    Sergio Gutierrez. DiarioElHierro.es (10.23.2011. 11:36 pm)
The Security and Emergency Councillor of the City of El Pinar, Jesus Perez Quintero, ruled out yesterday that there is bubbling in the underwater eruption of La Restinga and appealed for calm, since "the situation is now normal "he said.

Speaking to DAILY IRON, the councilman said, "at present there are no signs pointing to a possible reactivation, as has been published in some media," and said that, after viewing the aerial photos taken this Sunday , "shows that there is no activity in the area, there is no surface activity," the councilman confirmed to this newspaper.

According to Perez Quintero, "what you see from earth, the sea being calm, is a grouping of small fragments of magmatic material as the magma is slowly emerging, which could be confused with bubbling," said Councilman DAILY IRON.

Also, the council told this newspaper that a helicopter had flown over the area, "finding no signs of activity, or bubbling;" in the area is also a Civil Guard patrol vessel. "Everything is calm," 'said Pérez Quintero.

For its part, the Canary Islands Government has also ensured that, for the moment, "no one can speak of reactivation of the volcano until new ground deformation can be detected and the data survey is completed."

Here is the most recent Geolurking 3D rendering of the progression of the earthquakes under El Hierro:

It shows the EQs are now mostly deeper than before and migrated under the El Golfo area.

Weekly Report: At the whim of the volcano

    October 22, 2011

After 3 months of earthquakes and several weeks of uncertainty, the volcanic crisis underway in the island of Hierro appears to have entered a phase of stagnation. The neighbors of the nearest town Restinga to the volcano, just two and a half kilometers away from the focus of the eruption-have been able to return to their homes.

In the last hours, seismic activity has fallen sharply in intensity. But there is environmental damage that has not yet been evaluated. A fishing and diving paradise has been hurt by lava emissions that have taken place beneath the waters of the "sea of calm."

    DIARIOELHIERRO.ES, writing (23.10.2011. 16:02 pm)

The appearance of the stain is due to concentrations of magmatic material

Aerial reconnaissance Helicopter Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) of the Canary Islands, held this morning on the Sea of Calm, has been able to specify the nature of changes in the spot, visible in the early hours from La Restinga.

Scientists involved in this recognition that the material, darker brown than the rest, "is fine, is grouped into circles and the backlight shines." Also, according to the report submitted by the National Geographic Institute and the direction of Pevolca, "this material appears to be an accumulation of granular particles, being able to check that the area under the water closest to the material has a greater degree of turbulence."

Moreover, the report notes the absence of definitive proof "might be fine slag and ash lapilli type." If this were so, this process seems to follow the same pattern as subaerial eruptions that have taken place in El Hierro. Also, from the point of view of the volcano tremor follows the normal dynamics of these eruptions, and has not observed any significant change, reports the Ministry of Security of the Canarian Government.

    EARTHQUAKES

In reference to the number of earthquakes that have occurred in the last hours in El Hierro, the surveillance network for monitoring volcanic 24h National Geographic Institute, registered and located 78 seismic events, one of them slightly felt in the epicentral area. The maximum magnitude recorded in this period is 3.1.

Most events are located in the Gulf at depths of about 20-25 km. Almost all are located in the sea and are aligned NNW-SSE.

By the direction of the Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk (Pevolca) are reminded that we are in a situation of yellow light on the island of El Hierro and red light, Level 1, in La Restinga, as well as maintaining vigilance over the evolution of the process to note any changes that might be a risk
