From zero to one hundred
Ori Shavit,a food journalist and a restaurant critic who used to indulge on steaks for breakfast has confessed that she "flew from zero to one hundred and moved sides" after watching Gary Yourofsky's inspirational speech known on You tube as "Best speech you will ever hear".
She used to neck bloody steaks, nibble on shrimps from its shell and scalded oysters in hot boiled water as if there is no tomorrow... food was (and still is) one of her passions, she used to eagerly chew any new animal appearing on the menu - live or dead.
So what the hell happend to her one day, that she became a vegan?
Like in any good melodrama, the story begins on a date, with a guy that to her horror she found was a vegan.this is what went through her head:
"what am I,an 'all' eating that makes a living writing about food, have in common with an eccentric vegan that raise a blind epileptic cat and a dove with one lazy foot that can not fly (A true story.yes.yes.)
But the guy was not at all weird, but mostly cute and smart and sensitive, and she, with her journalistic tendencies, has decided to take the opportunity to understand what is the deal with this veganism.
"Vegetarianism - Okay, everyone knows what it is, Even I at certain moments would laughingly call myself - 'vegeterian at heart',- especially when I was making a whole chicken,I used to rub it in good spices and olive oil, put a lemon and rosemary up its bottom and tried to forget I'm holding something that was once alive (appologies for the sensitive readers)
"But veganism? What the hell do you actually eat? and what is this business with honey and eggs?"
Her date began to understand that he will not get of the hook so easily, and offered her to see Gary Yourofsky's lecture, a leading vegan activist from the United States,a one that lie down on fences and go into jail every other day, well, you know, one of the insanes.
"An hour and a half of concentrated watching, and you will have the answers to all your questions", promissed the nice guy.
Ori clarify to the readers: "Before you become angry, you should know,he was not at all a missionary. In general, I do not think anyone can make any type of reversal in your life.Maximum is to push the door a crack, so if you want you can go in"
After a while he sent the link.
The e.mail link dozed off for few weeks, and she completely forgot about it Until -"came one Saturday with a little free time",and suddenly she found herself pressing 'play'.
Looking at the frentic man with the american accent, juggle with words infront of a bunch of skeptical students. she decided to sit and watch everything, from beginning to end, fixing her eyes on the screen. "Come on, give me the truth once, and I nibble all that without leaving even the bones."
She sat an hour or so.
Yes,there was demagogy (or clever rhetoric, whatever you choose to call it), a few annoying and exaggerated bits - the man also promotes some products that sound disgusting, that taste like meat and are made of plastic or something,But underneath it all there were many facts, pictures and explanations, that no matter how we search within ourselvs,we can not find a suitable answer. nothing that we didn't know before, just a rearrangement of all the correct and significant details.
Ori faced them now speechless.
When the lecture was over, she told herself just one word: "s**t."
her conclusions -
"Sometimes we see something that's so true, and we can not go back,Call it enlightenment,an insight,a repentance,it does not matter."
"The thing is that I felt I could no longer close my eyes or keep my thoughts uninterrupting me when I prepare the stuffed chicken at home.I had to choose things out of awareness. And if I do not have good enough reasons, um, maybe I should not keep doing this."
"At this moment I knew that everything is about to change. This is frightening, especially when my whole living, desires and identity revolves around food, much of which will now be off limits. On the other hand, I realized I had no choice.
"At first I thought that for the purpose of making a living, when I am out,I will eat everything and only at home I will be a vegan.later I thought that maybe outside I can be satisfied with vegeterianism. It did not work even for a moment - I accelerated from zero to a hundred in 10 seconds and moved sides.I could barely manage to even recommend the dishes that I ate only a few days before my last column for the magazine "On the table".I could not do it."
"So began my journey into the land of vegans.Like all significant journeys,it will probably never end. I'm going to continue to enjoy life like there is no tomorrow, only without oysters."
