Russia threatens to block NATO routes

"Russia has threatened to block NATO's supply routes to Afghanistan, should the Western military alliance continue to disregard Moscow's concerns about the US-led defense shield for Europe, a report says.


Russian Ambassador to NATO Dmitri Rogozin warned that Moscow will review its cooperation with the Western military alliance on Afghanistan if the NATO fails to address Russia's objections, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

Earlier on Thursday, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned that direct actions will be taken if his country's concerns are not addressed.

Medvedev envisioned possible missile attacks on Poland, Romania, Spain, and Turkey as a means to disable the counter-missile batteries, if the United States fails to acknowledge the concerns of the Russian defense officials.

He also warned that the country will deploy nuclear weapons to European borders in response to the move.

Russia's threats to suspend the NATO supply lines to Afghanistan coincides with a similar punitive measure taken by Pakistan on Saturday in retaliation to the US-led alliance's recent airstrikes on Pakistani military forces, which killed 24 soldiers.

NATO started using safer routes in Russia to deliver its supplies to its forces since Washington and Moscow reset diplomatic relations in 2009.

The Russian government has long opposed the NATO's disputed plan of deploying an anti-missile shield in Europe, arguing that the would-be system in its "backyard” is not to secure Washington's European allies, but is effectively aimed at Russia.

NATO claims that the anti-missile shield is planned to thwart possible attacks from 'rogue' states, and it will go ahead with the plan despite Russia's concerns."

The US said they were prepared to sit at the table and discuss this, and to provide assurances that the threat is not Russia, which Russia has been asking for in legal terms.

US did state the the shields will continue as planned and that this will not change.

I just hope something is worked out soon, as a new cold war may well be the future if nothing is done to pacify the situation.

Today, students in Iran invaded the UK Embassy and ransacked the place, while Iran expelled the UK Ambassador which the UK cited as being 'regrettable'...The UK has asked all inter-bank relations to be severed which means no more lending to Iran, with partner countries to make similar statements later on.

Russia has many interests in Iran, and this might also be one of the reasons (in addition to the missile shield and north pole territorial claims), that the pressure is being applied on critical supply routes through Russian territory, but who knows.

I hope it is just a case of sabre rattling than a full blown cold war.

Russia's Ambassador to NATO Dmitry Rogozin warned, in remarks to the State Duma today that if the U.S. and NATO don't respond appropriately to Russia's concerns regarding the European missile defense system then Russia will have to review its relationship to NATO in other areas, as well. This could include Russia's cooperation in NATO's northern supply route that passes through Russia and Central Asia on its way to Afghanistan. Rogozin's comments came in the context of the Nov. 23 speech by President Dmitry Medvedev outlining the measures Russia will take if it isn't given binding guarantees that European missile defense isn't aimed at Russia. According to the TV network, Russia Today, Rogozin told the Duma that when it comes to national security, Moscow must think globally, just as our partners do. He stressed that Russia would only be respected if its partners see it as a power that is capable of an adequate response to any aggressor or group of aggressors. The diplomat pointed out that the U.S. plans all its military operations based on the concept of a lightning strike. NATO can simultaneously fight two large wars and six medium-scale ones. "It's a good question, especially for us, who would be enemies in large wars," Rogozin noted.

Rogozin ridiculed U.S. proposals to allow Russian experts to monitor tests of the system as "absurd." "It looks more like propaganda than a serious proposal," he said. "Our specialists might have been interested in monitoring the tests if they could use telemetric equipment but Washington will not allow that. They said our experts could look through binoculars from some sort of a barge from a long distance. We have a planetarium in Moscow and it is very exciting to watch the stars there, so they might well have invited us to visit this planetarium."

Rogozin also reported that he will be traveling to both Tehran and Beijing in January to discuss the U.S. missile defense plan with officials in both Iran and China. He said he would meet with Foreign Ministry and General Staff officials in China, and hold talks with the head of the Supreme National Security Council and diplomats in Iran. Earlier in the day, Rogozin met with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to discuss preparations for the ministerial meeting of the NATO-Russia Council on Dec. 8. Medvedev's Nov. 23 address is expected to be a major topic of discussion at the gathering.
