Every night, a network of NASA all-sky cameras scans the skies above the United States for meteoritic fireballs. Automated software maintained by NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office calculates their orbits, velocity, penetration depth in Earth's atmosphere and many other characteristics.

On Mar 17, 2024, the network reported 1 fireball. (1 sporadic)

    The Moon

Astronomers Call For Radio Silence on the Far Side of the Moon

"We are at risk of a Wild West scenario."

The dark side of the Moon

There's a growing and passionate call for preserving radio silence on the far side of the Moon.

A first-of-its-kind international symposium is being held this week, turning up the volume to mull over the prospect of protecting real estate on the Moon's far side exclusively for dedicated scientific purposes. Despite the Moon being surrounding by a vacuum, there's an air of urgency to the meeting.

Held under the auspices of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), the first IAA Moon Farside Protection Symposium is taking place March 21-22 in Turin, Italy. The goal of the gathering is to set off a wake-up call that engages the global scientific, political, and industrial community to be aware of a growing list of concerns.

Earth's neighboring celestial body has the unique property of naturally shielding radio waves generated by chatter on Earth and around it. What some meeting organizer's see is need for a radio silence zone, dubbing it a shielded zone on the Moon.

That idea has been championed by Claudio Maccone of the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (National Institute for Astrophysics). In December 2021, the IAA established a new permanent committee devoted to the Moon Far Side Protection, chaired by Maccone as IAA technical director.

Maccone and colleagues contend that the Moon's far side is a region of paramount scientific interest as it provides an environment free from the electromagnetic pollution typical on Earth. They point to the quickening pace of lunar missions by multiple nations that may well irreversibly compromise the current condition of the moon's radio quietness.

"My concern is that lunar projects are rapidly developing and are not coordinated," says Joseph Silk, an astrophysicist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland and professor of physics at the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris.

"We are at risk of a Wild West scenario due to the rivalries between competing space agencies and commercial interests. The number of desirable lunar sites is limited. The last major outer space treaty dates to 1967, and has no means of enforcement. A new International Space Treaty is urgently needed."

    The Moon & NASA

NASA’s Fiscal Year 2024 Budget for Luna

Illustrations of SpaceX’s Lunar Starship and Blue Origin’s Blue Moon lunar landers respectively. NASA has contracted these companies to land Artemis astronauts on the Moon, this decade and next.

The US Congress will provide NASA with $24.9 billion for FY2024, a budget two billion less than the Presidential request and half a billion less than FY2023. Accounting for inflation only makes the cut deeper.

However, the US Congress has prioritized and maintained similar levels of funding for Artemis, which not only includes sustaining development and production of the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft architecturally required for astronauts to reach lunar orbit but also the full requested $1.9 billion for the crewed lunar landing providers SpaceX and Blue Origin. NASA also gets the requested $380 million for continued development of advanced lunar spacesuits for which the agency chose Axiom Space and Collins in 2022.

What isn’t clear yet is what ensued of the $459 million budget request for NASA’s Lunar Discovery and Exploration (LDEP) program, particularly to ensure full funding for the CLPS lunar landings necessary to enable diverse surface science and technology demonstrations.

    The Sun

How to Make a Solar Eclipse Viewer at Home

Safely watch the total solar eclipse on April 8

To build one, all you need are a few household supplies: a box (a shoebox will work), a small piece of tinfoil, a white sheet of paper, tape, a pin or needle and a box cutter or X-Acto knife.

Cut a small hole, about 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) across, in one end of the shoebox, near the top edge.

Tape a piece of tinfoil over the hole.

Using a pin or needle, punch a hole in the center of the foil.

Tape a small piece of white paper to the inside of the box, at the opposite end from the foil-covered hole. The paper should be positioned so that light entering the box through the pin hole will hit it. This is your "projection screen," where you'll look for the image of the sun.

Cut a 1 inch (2.5 centimeter) hole in the box on a side adjacent to the image screen (the white piece of paper). This is your viewing hole; it must be positioned so that you can look through it at an angle and see the white paper.

Place the lid back on the box.

    Watch the eclipse.

To test your viewer, take it outside on a sunny day and hold the shoebox so that it lines up with its own shadow, aligning with light from the sun. Stand so that when you look through the viewing hole, you can see a tiny circle of light on the image screen; that's the sun. During the eclipse, you'll see the shadow of the moon pass in front of the sun.

REMEMBER: Looking directly at the sun, even when it is partially covered by the moon, can cause serious eye damage or blindness. NEVER look at a partial solar eclipse without proper eye protection.

    The Night Sky

Monday, March 25: Full Crow Moon – Penumbral Lunar Eclipse

The moon will reach its full phase on Monday, March 25 at 3:00 a.m. EDT, 12:00 a.m. PDT, or 07:00 GMT. The March full moon, known as the Worm Moon, Crow Moon, Sap Moon or Lenten Moon, always shines in or near the stars of Leo or Virgo. The indigenous Ojibwe people of the Great Lakes region call this full moon Ziissbaakdoke-giizis "Sugar Moon" or Onaabani-giizis, the "Hard Crust on the Snow Moon". For them it signifies a time to balance their lives and to celebrate the new year. The Cree of North America call it Mikisiwipisim, the "the Eagle Moon" — the month when the eagle returns. The Cherokee call it Anvyi, the "Windy Moon" when the planting cycle begins anew.

This full moon will pass through the northern portion of the Earth's penumbral shadow, slightly darkening the moon in a penumbral lunar eclipse visible in the Americas. The lower (southern) rim of the full moon will start its trip through the shadow at 12:53 a.m. EDT (04:53 GMT). At maximum eclipse at 3:14 a.m. EDT (07:14 GMT), 96% of the moon will be immersed. The moon will slide fully clear of the penumbra at 5:33 a.m. EDT (09:33 GMT). A detectable darkening of the moon is only expected to be apparent between 2:30 and 4 a.m. EDT (06:30 to 08:00 GMT). This lunar eclipse will be followed later by the total solar eclipse on April 8.

Fake Eclipse Glasses Polluting Marketplace, American Astronomical Society Warns

Here's how to check if yours are safe

April 8's total solar eclipse is approaching fast.

Millions of people along the path of totality will be viewing the total eclipse, meaning millions of pairs of eyes will gazing up at the sun for hours as the eclipse unfolds. When it comes to solar observation, safety is paramount as viewing the sun directly and without protection can cause serious and long-term damage to your eyes.

That's why ahead of the once-in-a-lifetime natural phenomenon, the American Astronomical Society (AAS) is warning people of about the risks of counterfeit and knock-off solar glasses.

The AAS says there is a way in which you can test your solar glasses before using them for the event.

If you wear them inside, you shouldn't be able to see anything except for very bright lights, but they will appear faint. If you can see things like pictures on the wall then the glasses are not dark enough for solar viewing.

If they pass that indoor test, you can take them outdoors and have a look around. Again, you shouldn't be able to see anything when wearing eclipse glasses other than the sun's reflection off a reflective surface and again, it should appear faint. If your glasses fail any of these home tests, you should either try and get a refund or discard them.

The inside left earpieces of counterfeit Chinese (top) and genuine American (bottom) eclipse glasses. Much of the text on the counterfeit glasses is copied from the real ones. Note that the counterfeit glasses include the name of U.S. company American Paper Optics but not the address (though there is a spurious fragment of an unrelated address above the name), whereas APO's glasses include both their name and address, as required by the ISO 12312-2 international standard for filters for direct observation of the sun.

Top: Counterfeit eclipse glasses from China that are printed on the back with “Mfg. by: American Paper Optics,” a U.S. company. Bottom: Real eclipse glasses from American Paper Optics. Notice that the lenses in the counterfeit glasses are black and have straight left and right edges, while the lenses in the genuine APO glasses are reflective and have curved left and right edges. Also note that these are representative designs. Most manufacturers of eclipse glasses make them with a wide variety of artwork on the front.

Quote 2023 was quite a year for aliens in the news which included reports of creatures in a backyard in Las Vegas, alleged alien mummies being presented to the Mexican Congress, and an alien invasion of a shopping mall in Florida. Receiving less publicity were reports from a remote village in Peru of harrowing encounters with aliens that moved on hover boards like Green Goblin from the 'Spiderman' movie.

The two stars on the outer edge of the Big Dipper’s bowl – Merak and Dubhe – are called “the Pointers” because they point at Polaris. To find the North Star, draw an imaginary line between these two stars and extend it about five times. When you find Polaris, you are on your way to finding the Little Dipper and, eventually, the Ursa Minor constellation. Polaris is the brightest star in Ursa Minor that marks the end of the Little Dipper’s handle.
