UK-US-Australia Collaboration Scales Plant Growth in Preparation for Space

While great progress has been made, operating in zero gravity remains an ongoing challenge

The ARC Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space (P4S), led by UK company Vertical Future (also supported by the Australian Space Agency and NASA) is aimed at delivering a fully autonomous agriculture system to the world’s first commercial space station. Constructed by Axiom, the space station is due to be in orbit in 2026.

P4S Director, Professor Matthew Gilliham, says that in addition to helping to feed astronauts of the future, these technologies will also be applied to terrestrial agriculture.

“The project will deliver prototypes for a fully autonomous agriculture system that can be monitored and operated remotely or with artificial intelligence, fit for future space exploration, aligned to NASA’s future Moon-to-Mars Artemis missions,” said Professor Gilliham.

“This collaboration will design plant growth systems that can work autonomously. It will help us to deliver our aims of enabling long-term space habitation, and we will also be able to utilise the technology we develop to improve sustainability of food, medicine, and material production on Earth.

Map Shows Where Billions of Cicadas Will Soon Emerge in the US

Any day now, two massive broods of cicadas will emerge from the ground in a double emergence event that hasn’t happened in over 200 years. Billions — maybe even trillions — of these insects will be flying around, and now a map from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows us exactly where this “cicada-geddon” will happen.

The two groups are Brood XIII and Brood XIX. Cicadas have a periodical life cycle, only emerging from below the surface when they reach adulthood and temperatures are right. Some take 13 years to become adults, while others take 17 years.

It is a rare event for cicadas with a 13-year life cycle and a 17-year life cycle to reach adulthood at the same time. Experts said this event will not happen again until 2245.

Brood XIII (represented by a brown/green color on the USDA map) consists of three species and has a 17-year life cycle. This group will be seen in parts of Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin and near Lake Michigan. Expect the suburbs of Chicago to be noisy with their mating call during the summer months.

Brood XIX (seen in light blue on the USDA map) has a 13-year life cycle, and its four species will be seen more widespread across the U.S. These cicadas will resurrect in Alabama, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee and parts of Arkansas, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, North and South Carolina, Oklahoma and Virginia.

Even though the massive amount of cicadas may sound scary, the insects don’t bite or sting and are not hazardous to people or pets.

    Saint Elvis?

Spanish audio, with English subtitles available.

I’ve only watched a quarter (of 48:42), will report back if I watch any more.

Edit: Am getting near the end, 4 minutes left now (running on another iPad). The interesting clips have been mostly too short, but it seems to have lots of his story — more than I knew about. … OK, done now. Didn’t say about his dying on his toilet, fine by me.

Reminds me of a few of his movies I saw in a theatre, late 1960’s, and of his album In The Ghetto that another kid gave me.

    Lyrid Meteor Shower 2024

    When, Where & How

The Lyrid meteor shower occurs between April 16-25 every year and will next peak on the night of April 22, 2024.

Viewing conditions for the next Lyrid meteor shower may be hindered by the almost full Moon shining brightly in Virgo around the time of the Lyrid's peak, but that's not to say it's impossible to catch sight of an impressive meteor or three.

    Lyrid meteor shower

    ♦ When: 16 to 25 April
    ♦ Peak: April 22
♦ Comet of origin: C/1861 G1 Thatcher (Comet Thatcher)
♦ Zenithal Hourly Rate (ZHR): 18 (The number of meteors a single observer would see in an hour of peak activity with a clear, dark sky, radiant at the zenith)

As with most meteor showers, the peak viewing time will be before dawn, but the Lyrids will become visible beginning at about 10:30 p.m. local time.

The shower is known for its luminous dust trains (so-called “shooting stars”) which can be observed for several seconds. The Lyrids are associated with Comet Thatcher, a long-period comet that orbits the sun every 415.5 years; it last reached its closest approach to the Sun in 1861. The average Lyrid shower produces 15 to 20 meteors per hour.

Some years, the Lyrid meteor shower intensifies and can produce up to 100 meteors per hour in what's called an "outburst," but it is difficult to predict exactly when that will happen.

The radiant — the point from which the meteors appear to originate — will be high in the evening sky in the constellation Lyra to the northeast of Vega, one of the brightest stars visible in the night sky this time of year. Don't look directly toward the radiant, though, because you might miss the meteors with the longest tails.

The Lyrids are one of the oldest recorded showers, with observations going back to 687 B.C. Although it helps, you don't need any kind of special equipment to see the meteors; just look up at the dark sky, be patient and enjoy the show.
