Default What spirit will you show?

In the western hemisphere people celebrate Christmas and are busily preparing for buying gifts and rest.
Christmas as it is is faraway from Christ and what he taught.
It is heavily abused system of slave work force in Asia and other low wage countries in order to produce tons of wasteful things -"presents".

Question is what spirit will you show this year?
Will you change something and show the spirit of compassion and Love or spirit of greed?

I don't celebrate Christmas and even if I would do that here in my country it is a tradition that nobody buys presents for Christmas and it is a family reunion thing, keep it low and humble thing, at least majority does that though many others has embraced western tradition regarding buying spirit...

Will we all actually do something and not fall into December madness and greedy sales and offer our loved ones better things like real appreciation instead of cheap Chinese toy?

    What spirit will we show?
Love, love and see what happens!

It's going to be all about family this year. Meaningful sharing. Gifts that have purpose, spending time with loved ones. No crass consumption. The celebration of course is ancient, the time of year, the solstice. Family, togetherness, huddled against the darkness and cold in the northern hemisphere, which sort of justifies the holiday. You give in a time when people have less, when the climate is not as forgiving. No matter whether the holiday is celebrated or not, I always look forward to the opening of hearts, however people choose to express it.

Well, I donīt celebrate this date for a looooong time. In fact, i get pretty much depressed on Dec 25th.

First of all, I donīt think it represents the real date of the birth of Jesus, if there was actually a Jesus...

Second, I donīt feel like celebrating a date that directly represents 2011 years of tyranny.

Third, I donīt get how they manage to introduce the horrific Santa Claus character on this story.

Fourth, I donīt like to lie to kids, making them believe in a fairy tail, and then deceive then, making them believe that all their dreams were a lie.

Fifth, I donīt like the red and white decoration. Itīs too North-American for me.

Sixty, I donīt like the idea of everyone suddenly becoming saints only on a single date in a year. The world is a mess, if you want to be good, be good all the time, not only once in a year.

Well....I could go to a hundred here...

    Cheers,

    Raf.
The house is on fire, the fire alarm is ringing, you can smell the smoke, you can feel the heat, but somehow, refuse to get out of the bed and do anything about it; Maybe youīre just scared, maybe you believe the fire is an illusion, or maybe youīre just waiting for a miracle to save you...Eventually, you die. So, what is it worth to be "awake" if you donīt get out of the bed and do something?

I have dinner with friends and we talk about many subjects that are of interest to us.

No presents involved, only food and wine and us. Like 6 of us. We have a good time and that's it.

The spirit that we show is friendship, no greed no flashy gifts....just long hugs and smiles.

We will be celebrating the Feast of Lights honoring the Servant spirit as I believe what Yeshua's intent when he stood up in the Temple and said, "I am the light of the world" as the Shammash was lit.

I do not like the commercialization of Christmas, it is not in keeping with what my spirit says. It's fun to give gifts, but it's gotten to the point that that is what it seems like it's all about.

    For some fun:

We do celebrate Christmas as the birth of Christ even tho i know Jesus was not born in December and the celebration has it's origins in the Yule celebration and the winter solstice celebration.
For us it is all about family and we remember the coming of Christ to this world in the flesh.
No gifts just a good meal of which each of us prepares a part and family and friends enjoying each others company.

I agree with much of what you all have said. I recall Christmas as a child growing up. The gifts were always welcome, but what I recall and enjoy more was my famil, aunts, uncles, cousins and family friends coming together to enjoy each others company and eat way tooooo much food. My syblings and I share Christmas greetings and have stopped the gift giving years ago. Since part of my family are scattered right across Canada. It is not possible to get together with everyone. This year is special for me. For the first time in 10 years my three sons will be in Ottawa for the holiday season. Although we have always maintained contact via phone and e-mail, it is not the same as having your children around you. This Christmas season will be very special for me. The greatest gift I will have is to be together with my three sons.

I really like all responses here ,it shows me that we`re different in a more spiritual way than before.
It doesn`t mean we`re better ,just we choose to see the real thing not surrogate .

Christ wasn`t born in December and rest of the things written here I agree with.

If it`s about Love then date does not matter!

There is excellent biblical evidence to say Yeshua was born September 21st.

When you recall that there were shepherds outside guarding their flocks , you see that in December the 25th in Israel is really cold so December is out!

But I`d be interested to see a link or so towards 21st of Sept.

I think this will require a separate thread, because it's slightly off the question in the OP. I will post one, and you can decide the merits for this case.
