Default Why Worldchanging Isn't Covering the Oil Spill...and why the Oil Spill is OVERHYPED!!

"Alex Steffen has a fascinating piece up at Worldchanging explaining why they've decided not to cover the BP oil spill.

Quote Shouldn't a site whose purpose is to explore solutions to planetary problems be all over the planet's most visible current problem?

In a word, no. The decision not to cover the BP Spill has been fairly straightforward for us: we don't do problems, unless we're covering them in order to explain how a solution could work, or unless a new analysis of a problem is so telling that it changes the way we understand how it could be solved. The BP Spill is huge, but not particularly unique....

And oil spills are far from the worst environmental disasters we've unleashed and are in the process of unleashing through the routine operation of our economy as currently designed. Climate change will over the next century almost certainly prove far more destructive to the natural systems and human communities of the Gulf than any oil spill ever could, and that's a problem the Deepwater rig would have worsened if it had worked perfectly, as part of its successful operation. And, as we've mentioned here before, climate change is only the largest problem in a set of interconnected problems that stem from transgressing our planetary boundaries, problems that include massive extinctions, marine deadzones, desertification, and ocean acidification. He seems to have two points. First, that hand-wringing and finger-pointing aren't very productive. And second, that treating the oil spill as if it's an anomalous disaster just furthers the idea that we're basically doing things right. In Steffen's view, the real story is the systemically unsustainable nature of human life on earth, as currently practiced. The BP spill is just a symptom, and not a root problem."

The above comment on the article "Seeing Past the BP spill" really impacted me in that it seems so many people in the media and here on these forums, are focusing on a symptom of a relatively small disaster rather than the larger vastly more destructive forces of society at large. The oil spill has in some ways created a diversion from the REAL core problems, those which are systemic and endemic to modern way of living.

Another interesting quote from the above article to help put things into perspective:

"Even in terms of oil spilled in North America, this disaster is small compared to business as usual: more than 90% of all the oil spilled in North America comes from oil leaked from cars (or poured down drains) finding its way to the sea, according to a landmark 2002 report; in the Puget Sound region alone, more oil is leaked from cars and home use every two years than was spilled by the Exxon Valdez."

    two very valid points imo

The only positive aspect of the oil spill, is that people STOP focusing on the oil spill and INSTEAD become aware that we need to abandon oil completely and then focus all their mental energy and thoughts on solutions in coming up with alternatives to the use of fossil fuels. Everything else is a waste of time. Unless you can personally contribute to stopping the oil gusher, and or clean-up procedures giving it any more thought on the whole is a waste. There are far more pressing systemic concerns as I hope have helpfully been outlined in the article above.

We have known oil is bad for the environment for how many decades? and decide we should do something about it now? This all seems so re-actionary. This is a wake up call for the ignorant to become more proactive. Once the oil spill ends, and all is cleaned up (and we maybe ban offshore drilling) and everyone goes on their merry way using transportation based on fossil fuels....those people will have learned nothing.

Here's a bio-energetic version of what's going on with the spill. The oil spill is many things. It may also be a case of corporate karma. We reap what we sow and all that. A great deal of bad karma can emanate from guilt and denial. In this case, the denial is that the oil companies don't really believe that oil harms the planet. They deny it in their collective mindset. Denial, which is basically suppressed energy, always seeks release to restore balance. And it always finds a way to give us a reflection of that which we deny. In this case, the denial that they're not harming the planet seeks expression and you have things like an oil spill. The universe always seeks balance by releasing suppressed energy. What's different now, in the Shift of Ages that we're now in and the final stages of transition, is that all denial and suppression is being cleared from the planet. Balance gets restored just a little bit each time the denial gets expressed and the energy is released. Many of us a debating the catalyst for this change, but there is no denying that it is happening.

    Our civilization is being dismantled.

The global elite's constant mantra of a "return to growth" cannot occur at the end of a galactic and planetary cycle when everything is winding down. It's ludicrous and they know it. But they have to keep repeating their mantra because the longer they can drag out the existing paradigm, the more time they have for their underground survival preparations. Unfortunately, they do not believe in a spiritual shift. They feel they must hide underground as many did during previous cycle transitions.

Although my rant may at first appear to be a digression from the topic at hand, it's good to have a thread that discusses more of the metaphysical aspects of the oil spill and puts it in a greater context. This is often overlooked. Personally, I need a constant reminder that there is a higher purpose otherwise I will easily degenerate in to a nut case!
Our destiny is in our hands. Let us visualise a world of truth, freedom and equality.

Alex Jones has been saying since the oil spill began that the global elite would spin this into "cap and trade", carbon taxes, and global depopulation. This thread is simply proof that Alex was right....

Knowledge is not fear. Fear in the result of little or no understanding....
