This 92lb basalt rock was unearthed by Andrew Nott from a building site in North Street Toowoomba (Qld) during the digging of foundations for a factory in 1974.
The rock is carved with a solar motif with a stylistic face and heiroglyphs of serpents. Marilyn Pye bought the artifact and flew it to New York where it was identified as belonging to the most ancient Meso-American culture - The La Tolita - pre-Mayan, and estimated at 2000 BC. Due to a series of circumstances, Marilyn became aware of The Hopi Prophecies concerning the return of the true white brother", which tells of a whiter person with two helpres bringing the symbol of the sun to the Hopi. The legend says that if the three come bringing the symbol of the Sun and the Cross, the "great purification" would begin. If the symbol was not returned then the world would be destroyed by another holocaust. (The Hopi Indians believe they survived a former holocaust by retreating underground). The rock finally made it to the Hopi Indians, and the elder Grandfather David became very excited over the rock and said: "This is what we have been waiting for. There are three others to come."

Great post, thanks for the article. I am amused they consider that something from 2,000BC is the most ancient for cultures. This...is so wrong. There were many civilizations that existed pre-flood. Why do they continue to still teach otherwise?

In Australia there are ancient human remains that have been controversially dated as being from 40,000-50,000 years old. One is known as Mungo Man and the area in which he was found has had other such finds since. The area is very arid and dry, with a ridge of sand and rock alongside. It is full of fossils of sea creatures and shells etc and is a real puzzle as the sea is hundreds of kilometres away. If the finds are of the date mentioned it would be a huge blow to many theories on ancient human travelling across Asia, and the whole idea was ridiculed at first, but it is now much more accepted. The Hobbit-like human discovered in Indonesia also caused an even bigger stir in this part of the world.

You are quite right DID, I used to teach high school History 30 years ago, and I taught that the Aboriginal people came to Australia from Asia (probably India), via a land bridge 4-5,000 years ago! That view is now considered wrong in just about all the facts!

Perhaps the important lesson to learn from that is that just because someone says a topic is finished, closed and forever solved (and people do) we should continue to search, discover and extend our knowledge. That's the only way to find out.

Quote DNA confirms Aboriginal culture one of Earth's oldest

    By:AG Staff with AAP | September-23-2011

The first Aboriginal genome sequence confirms Australia's native people left Africa 75,000 years ago.

ABORIGINAL AUSTRALIANS ARE descendents of the first people to leave Africa up to 75,000 years ago, a genetic study has found, confirming they may have the oldest continuous culture on the planet.

Professor Eske Willerslev of the University of Copenhagen, who led the study, says Aboriginal Australians were the first modern humans to traverse unknown territory in Asia and Australia. "It was a truly amazing journey that must have demanded exceptional survival skills and bravery," he says.

A century-old lock of hair, given by a West Australian indigenous man to an anthropologist, has led to the discovery that ancestors of Aboriginal Australians reached Asia at least 24,000 years before another wave of migration that populated Europe and Asia.

Experts from the University of Western Australia (UWA) and Murdoch University were part of an international team that analysed DNA from the hair, and found no hereditary material from European immigrants to Australia. This made the man's DNA a perfect candidate for looking at the history of Aboriginal migration.

Aboriginal Australians first to cross Asia

Studying his DNA, the researchers found that the ancestors of Australian Aboriginals had split from the first modern human populations to leave Africa, 64,000 to 75,000 years ago. Dr Joe Dortch, a scientist at UWA, says the discovery turns on its head the existing theory that Aboriginals arrived here less than 50,000 years ago. The findings are detailed today in the journal Science.

"[The discovery] strongly supports the idea that Aborigines were [part of] an early and separate wave of human expansion out of Africa, before the subsequent wave that established Europeans and Asians," says Professor Alan Cooper, director of the Australian Centre for Ancient DNA at the University of Adelaide. "However, while this is a major step forward, the key unresolved question remains the unique story of Aboriginal history within Australia."

"This new DNA study powerfully confirms that Aboriginal Australians are one of the oldest living populations in the world, certainly the oldest outside of Africa," agrees evolutionary biologist Professor Darren Curnoe of UNSW. "Australians are truly one of the world's great human populations and a very ancient one at that, with deep connections to the Australian continent and broader Asian region. About this now there can be no dispute."

Oldest living population in the world

In another study, in the American Journal of Human Genetics, researchers found that when these ancestors of Aboriginals crossed through Asia, they may have interbred with Siberian people known as the Denisovans.

For that study, DNA was extracted from a finger bone excavated in the freezing temperatures of Siberia to analyse the migration of people to tropical parts of Asia and Australia more than 40,000 years ago.

Examining DNA from the finger, researchers from the Harvard Medical School in the US and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany concluded that the Denisovans - a primitive group of humans descended from Neanderthals - migrated from Siberia to tropical parts of Asia. They contributed DNA to Aborigines along with present-day New Guineans and an indigenous tribe in the Philippines known as Mamanwa.

    Aboriginal people had Siberian ancestors

To make the link between the Denisovans and indigenous Australians, the study looked at two Aboriginal populations, one of which was from the Northern Territory. The researchers concluded that Denisovans interbred with modern humans in South-East Asia 44,000 years ago, before Australia separated from Papua New Guinea.

"This paper helped fill in some empty pieces in the evolutionary puzzle that began after early humans left Africa, and reinforces the view that humans have intermixed throughout history," say the scientists behind the research in a summary of the findings.

"The study also confirms controversial claims that the ancestors of all living Eurasians interbred with the Neandertals, while past Asians/Oceanians also mated with the mysterious ancient humans from Denisova cave[s] in Siberia," comments Darren from UNSW. "This is clear and independent validation of DNA work on both these extinct humans [the Neanderthals and the Denisovans], confirming today's other big announcement about their deep connections to Australians and other indigenous people in our region."

    And this story:

Quote DNA confirms Aboriginal Australian origins

by Hamish Clarke Tuesday, 8 May 2007
    Cosmos Online

SYDNEY: Australian Aborigines descend from the same lineage as the first modern humans to migrate from Africa, DNA analysis has confirmed. The find is a further blow to the idea that the evolution of indigenous Australians was marked by many migrations from Asia.

"We wanted to know whether the same 'Out-of-Africa' migration that was responsible for founding the gene pools of Eurasia was also the basis for Australia's population… or were there several separate migrations?" said study co-author and evolutionary biologist Toomas Kivisild, of the University of Cambridge in England.

The Out-of-Africa theory argues that modern humans evolved in Africa 100,000 to 200,000 years ago and one group migrated out to the rest of the world between 50,000 and 70,000 years ago, replacing – and not mixing with – ancient homo populations already there.

    Alternative scenarios

Though many anthropologists accepted that Australia's native population arrived in a single wave 50,000 or so years ago, alternative migration scenarios have been proposed to explain confusing features in the aboriginal fossil record. For example, some experts argue that unusually small and less robust skulls compared to thicker later skulls found among early human remains found in Australia, are inconsistent with an Australian population that had been isolated since its inception.

In order to resolve these questions, lead author Georgi Hudjashov, of the University of Tartu in Estonia, and colleagues compared the DNA of living indigenous Australians in Kalumburu, Western Australia with DNA from people in New Guinea and around the Indian Ocean.

New Guinean children: The founding group leaving Africa 50,000 to 70,000 years ago may have had similar physical features, which were then lost elsewhere, say researchers. The new analysis shows that aboriginal Australians and New Guineans share a common ancestry.

As a kind of belt and braces approach, the team followed both maternal and paternal lineages by analysing mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and Y chromosome DNA respectively. MtDNA is used as a record of the maternal line of descent, as it only passes from mothers to daughters in their eggs. Likewise DNA on the Y chromosome is present only in males, so it can be used to trace our paternal lineages.

"Integrating the Y and mtDNA data is a good approach, as usually research teams rely on only the maternal, or paternal, evidence," commented Peter Brown, a palaeoanthropologist with the University of New England in Armidale, Australia.

    Little gene flow

Their analysis showed that DNA from people in New Guinea and aboriginal Australians could be traced back to early branches of the human phylogenetic tree, associated with the first humans to leave Africa 50,000 - 70,000 years ago. The study is revealed today in the U.S. journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The DNA analysis also revealed very little gene flow into Australia and New Guinea in the 50,000 or so years since the initial migration. Australians evolved in relative isolation compared to other parts of the Indian Ocean, which were subject to much more genetic mixing, said the study authors. This in turn suggests that developments in language and tool use were not influenced by outside sources, they said.

Not everyone agrees about the proposed extent of differences in Aboriginal fossils anyway. "The variability amongst Australian fossils tends to be exaggerated," commented David Bulbeck from Australian National University's School of Archaeology and Anthropology in Canberra. He argues that differences can be explained by climate and it's effect on physiology, rather than a series of migrations from Asia.

According to palaeoanthropologist Mike Morwood, also of the University of New England in Armidale, the paper confirms what many experts already believed – "that modern humans first appeared in Africa around 200,000 years ago, and that they dispersed out of Africa."

It is interesting to also read the debate after the second story (click the cosmosmagazine link).

My personal view on this is that the 75,000 years and 200,000 years quoted are estimates at best, based on fragments of information. It is fairly obvious that Australian Aborigines from different regions have many different mixes of ancestoral DNA. I suspect that if we dig deeper, literally, we would find much evidence of far older civilisations all over the Earth (and probably other planets), perhaps adding at least a zero to the larger of the numbers above.

The following is heading off topic - or is it? I suggest if we are to broaden our perspective, the stories quoted above (and many more, easily found using search engines) should be read in conjunction with this thread:

From what I've been told there are archaeological sites all over many planets out there in the universe dating back something like close to at least 12-20 BILLION years. This one universe, our universe is 23 Trillion years old.

And, just for the record, I seriously don't understand why they still claim humans came out of Africa? We didn't "come out of Africa" that's not how it worked.

There was a modern human skeleton found under a lava flow in Northern California in strata dating back around 400,000 years or so. Fact is humans, modern ones. Are much older than they're admitting too, and we didn't all "evolve" out of Africans. There is to much genetic variances in our dna among other things to fully absolutely debunk that. Not to mention the Anthropological Evidence that also proves otherwise.

I've done an interview with Val Osborn, the major researcher of the Sarina/Freshwater Point site. He comes up with some fascinating info.

I've also visited the Gympie Pyramid, not much of which remains, and taken a look at the Gosford Glyphs.

there are lots of old celtic stones called Ogham stones dotted around the british isles. they have a very old and basic and writing style, unique to the area.

i read an article a couple of years ago where some of these stones were found on the east coast of America. I am trying to find it, and will update this post if I do. These stones were made up to the 16th century, but by that time the practice had pretty much died out. So it's interesting to note that America was supposedly discovered by Amerigo Vespucci in 1504, while the Vikings had been colonising North America since the 10th century approx.

I dont know about anyone else, but in school I learned that Spanish and Portuguese people 'discovered' most of the Americas.

So, in brief. At Freshwater Point was a mining colony of perhaps a few thousand people of the Canaanite culture that spanned perhaps hundreds of years. They had farms, irrigation ditches, slag heaps, sluices, altar stones, roads, a whopping great stone jetty, cemeteries, boat yards, wells....

Why was Val so persecuted by the PTW? He sees it as being because if this were proven true, then a prior mining claim to Australia could be made.

Australia has been known about, visited, prospected and mined for thousands of years.
