Quote I am my brothers keeper
    I LOVE that saying myself.
(Because the answer to "Cain's" question always is: Yes, you ARE. Whether you want it or not.)

Quote Chrysalis, metamorphosis. I guess I like words that act like gates, or bridges, between one reality and another. So that with one word a reality can be transcended. I remember when I first heard the word 'catalyst' in chemistry classes. The concept of two coexisting substances needing a third to cause them to interact, sometimes violently, was a minor revelation to me.
    Interesting!
I had the same reaction (referring to the "minor revelation"), now that I think of it.

And I LOVE the word chrysalis.
In fact, I also like every word that starts with CH.
Which brings me to one of my favourite English words of all time: CHRYSANTHEMUM.
    Ah, it's gorgeous....

Well, my favorite word is "saudade". There´s no proper translation to this word, which is Portuguese, to English.

If translated, it would be something like "I miss you", with a big tone of hope.
    Why am I not surprised?
(No, really - I am asking myself. :-))

I think you might want to see Ellisa's post, and my reply to her. :-)

Will Ferrell made up two words I love:

Strategery (while playing George W. Bush in a debate)

Scrumtillescent (while playing James Lipton lavishing praise on an actress)

    Hilarious.
But then G.W. Bush always was a bountiful fountain of verbal inspiration.... :-)

(Oh - fountain! There's another word that I like, in any language.
And I will give it a rest now. : ))

'wretched' is a great word, too. It's a really expressive word.

It sounds like what it means. The hard 'R" together with the 'tch' sound really suggests someone or something lowly, being swept into the gutter, someone who's down and out...

"Lucid" is another word I like--for the same reason; it also seems to sound like what it means. 'Lucid' sounds light and fluid, like brightness and insight.

I love words that pull this off. They're so satisfying.

Already been said but.. My favorite word is "Awesome"! I am fully aware of the fact that I use this word a LOT in my day to day exchanges.

It may be cheesy slang from the 80's but it is a wonderful way to acknowledge someone or something in a positive way. As to say "I hear what you are saying and I completely agree with you"... Awesome!

Plus it invokes awe, and I find myself in awe of the people and world around me on a daily basis.

Serendipity, coined by the English author Horace Walpole, based on the old name for Sri Lanka, Serendip. And while searching for the word, I came across a serendipitous discovery! The acronym SERENDIP also stands for..wait for it... the Search for Extraterrestrial Radio Emissions From Nearby Developed Intelligent Populations! www.wikipedia.org/wiki/SERENDIP

Here's another of my words that hints at transformation and change, at least for me. Veil. There have been times in my life where I have perceived a veil between one phase of my life- one reality if you will, and another. I noticed that in the past each time my consciousness came in contact with this veil it would simply slide along it and not go through it. Yet the veil was so slight! With a thoughtful intent it was easily pierced.

I love, love luminescent myself (and most of the other words mentioned).
Illumination is also a very nice word.

Among French words, I like joyeux (more so than joyeuse) very much.
    Jadis is also very attractive.
(I am noticing that, if you put them together, they can tell you quite a lot about me. :-))

I like veil myself, for its phonetic qualities (which is how I picked all of my "favourite" words).
Regarding its meaning, I have exactly the same attitude towards - or experience with - it.
Piercing it can be so easy that it is, literally, frightful. Because it shows how awe-some, in the original sense of the word, your individual creative power is.

Gargantuan. never get to say it!

I like it because of its rarity and it's massively descriptive.

word I hate though (i know its not part of it, but we do live in a time/universe of duality right now)........Crusty. unless describing something that is suppose to be crusty. Otherwise, Blech!!

When I read the title of this thread, I had to laugh. It reminded me of what happened years ago when my husband asked our two and a half year old granddaughter, "what is Grandma's favorite word?" And in her little girl voice she piped up, "sh!t." I was struck dumb for a moment until I realized how often I really did say that word.

Though I don't say it as often, my favorite word is synchronicity...fun to say and a delight when it happens.
