    just found this regarding Kansas.

"(CNN) -- Wichita was under a tornado emergency late Saturday as a large twister, part of a series of severe storms in the Great Plains, moved through south-central Kansas and threatened to destroy homes.

The "confirmed large and extremely dangerous tornado was located just east of Conway Springs and moving northeast at 35 mph," toward the Wichita area, the National Weather Service reported Saturday night. "This is a particularly dangerous situation."

Major damage to houses and buildings were likely, "and complete destruction possible," the weather agency said. But by 10 p.m. (11 p.m. ET), Kansas authorities had reported no serious damages."

it was posted about 40 minutes ago under the Kansas section of the news.

"Severe US Weather: Why this warning is different

    Published April 14, 2012

    Associated Press

Long before powerful storms began to roll through the Midwest Saturday afternoon, forecasters had warned of "life-threatening" tornadoes, thunderstorms and hail.

Here are some details on why these warnings — which came on Friday — were so unusual.

JUST HOW RARE? This marks the second time in U.S. history that the Storm Prediction Center has issued a high-risk warning more than 24 hours in advance.

WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME: The first high-risk warning more than a day early came in April 2006, when nearly 100 tornadoes tore across the southeastern U.S. In all, a dozen people died and more than 1,000 homes were damaged in Tennessee.

WHY EARLIER WARNINGS: In the past, people often have had only minutes of warning when a siren went off. But improvements in storm modeling and technology let forecasters predict storms earlier and with greater confidence, the National Weather Service says. The Storm Prediction Center is part of the service.

NEW WARNING LANGUAGE: The weather service is now testing words such as "mass devastation," ''unsurvivable" and "catastrophic" aimed at getting more people to take heed. The warnings are being experimented with in Kansas and Missouri. The "life-threatening" warning for this round of storms, despite the dire language, was not part of that effort but just the most accurate way to describe what was expected, a weather service spokeswoman said.

ON THE GROUND: Tornadoes were spotted across the Midwest and Plains. Storms were reported in Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska and Oklahoma. Emergency officials in Iowa said that either high winds or a tornado damaged a hospital in Creston, southwest of Des Moines, but officials said no one was injured. In Nebraska, baseball-sized hail shattered windows and ripped siding from houses. In Oklahoma, more than 5,000 people gathered for a rattlesnake hunt in Woods County scattered when a tornado touched down there, an official said. And in Thurman, Iowa, officials tell AP this small western community of about 250 people has been severely damaged by a possible tornado, saying about 75 percent of the town was destroyed.

    "Tornadoes strike central Kansas

    4/14/2012
By TIM UNRUH and MICHAEL STRAND

Severe weather was delivered as had been forecast Saturday night and smacked parts of western and north-central Kansas, and more was predicted into this morning.
"We’re expecting another round of storms after midnight," said Ken Harding, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Topeka, late Saturday evening.
The "tornado threat" was expected to continue until 2 this morning.
A big tornado reportedly a quarter-mile wide developed in Rice County south of Geneseo in midafternoon and barreled to the northeast, threatening Kanopolis Lake, hitting homes near Smolan and causing sirens to sound in Salina.
"I can’t give you an eyewitness report because I’m in a 6-by-8 concrete shelter and the only light is filtering through the air vent," said Carson Mansfield, deputy chief of the Salina Police Department, talking on a cellphone from Kanopolis Lake about 6 p.m.
"I’m listening to hail pounding on the safe door. I can’t hear over the thunder," he said. Four people "and some dogs" were in the shelter.
Power was still out at the lake about 9 p.m.
Lake communities were spared, but folks in other areas affected by the rampage reported damage and debris.

Three tornadoes touched down in Saline County between 6 and 7:30 p.m., said Joe Koch, emergency management director.
"One came into the southwest corner (of the county) came up to the airport, lifted and went over Salina," he said. "We were fortunate."
Another touched down close to New Cambria, Koch said, and the third stirred up debris at Niles Road and Interstate Highway 70."

A tornado touched down north of Solomon, Kan., on Saturday evening. Interstate 70 can be seen in the foreground.

A massive storm system kept Kansas City on edge most of Saturday evening, spawning at least 12 tornadoes in rural areas of western and central Kansas, including one north of Dodge City that was on the ground for about half an hour.

The brunt of the tornadic supercell bore down hard on Wichita after 10 p.m., narrowly missing the city but heavily damaging a mobile home park at 52nd Street South and Clifton. A fire also erupted in the middle of the Pinaire Mobile Home Park, apparently caused by a ruptured natural gas line.

Straight-line winds caused some damage at the Wichita airport, and the city was pelted with torrential rain. There also were unconfirmed reports of damage at Spirit AeroSystems and at McConnell Air Force Base. Concerns about the storm’s onslaught already had prompted McConnell to relocate 16 aerial refueling tankers to Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota.

The severe storms even prompted forecasters at Wichita’s National Weather Service office to briefly seek shelter in a safe room before returning to their posts.

“The challenge on this particular storm is the severity level that is being forecast across so much of the state. It is one that is causing us much concern and requiring a lot of attention to determine exactly what is happening,” said Sharon Watson, spokeswoman for the Kansas Division of Emergency Management.

I got my tv to pick up a signal (i use antennas) and the weather people used "extreme emergency" and "catastrophic" talking about Wichita so reading post #29 was interesting because they were for sure using those words. It caught my attention though!

At least five people died early Sunday after a tornado hit in Woodward, Oklahoma. Most of last night’s tornadoes struck in Kansas. The outlook for today shows the most intense storms in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa.

UPDATED APRIL 15, 2012 5:30 CST (10:30 UTC) Officials in Oklahoma are reporting five people who died early Sunday after a tornado hit in and around the town of Woodward, Oklahoma in the northwest part of the state. Most were in the state of Kansas, but tornadoes were also reported in Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma and north Texas. As expected by the National Weather Service and Storm Prediction Center, the action began in late afternoon and early evening, with storm chasers sending back reports, video and images of tornadoes until dark, when the tornadoes became more difficult to spot.

The forecast for today calls for continued severe storms, with the most intense storms located further north, around Minnesota and Wisconsin and Iowa. NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center said in an outlook for April 15, 2012:

a tornado is occurring or could form at any time.

    * Some locations in or near the path of this storm include...
Christie... Westville... Cincinnati... Watts and Siloam Springs.

    Precautionary/preparedness actions...

If you are near the path of this storm... take cover now! If no
underground shelter is available move to an interior room on the
lowest floor. Mobile homes and vehicles should be abandoned for more
    substantial shelter. Avoid windows!

Heavy rainfall may obscure this tornado. Take cover now! If you wait
to see or hear it coming... it may be too late to get to a safe place.

Couldn't sleep all last night. The winds were gusting up to 40mph with a massive downpour and a lot of thunder here in Michigan.
Hope everyone in the plane states made it through ok.
