Bed was rattling -undisclosed earthquake? southern tip of illinois

I, woke up to my bed shaking. Not violently, but it was shaking nonetheless. for about 10 seconds, then it happened again a few seconds later for about the same, 10 to 20 seconds.



I thought at first it may have been thunder, but I got up and went outside at 2 am ish, and nothing. It was cloudy with some sprinkles, but no lightning or thunder.

hi starchild111, i had something similar happen last night while i was lying on my sofa watching an alien video from you tube. i felt a deep tremble as though the sofa was moving/shaking, it was strange. i checked all of the sites and found no evidence of any type of eq in this area, i am left to wonder if perhaps it happened somewhere else and i felt the concussion of it. it was very strange.

I remember feeling an earth quake probably around a 3-something, never got posted on usgs, like it never happened but even my mom and sister felt it.

I am so glad I am not the only one. Unbelievable that they are covering this. It was enough to wake me out of a deep sleep, im guessing 2 or 3ish. Thank so much for the replies!!!!! Not to mention that this was obviously not just my local area but country wide.

I used to live in a mining town in South Africa, Earth tremors and settlings of old mine workings were a regular occurence. In the time I was there, there was never anything stronger than a 3, mostly they were around 2.5, which is, seismically speaking, irrelevant, and why they are not reported on the USGS website. But that doesn't mean you don't feel it !!!!! Depending on the alignment of your building to the direction of the shock waves from the focus of the tremor, you could experience anything from bugger-all to having your room dance a little jig.

Thing is, they used to/generally do report even the 1s. Like I said, at least they USED to. Anyway.

The earthquake I experienced wasn't the same time as the one Star Child did, mine was like last month or something. But, definitely an earthquake. I live in Southern California, have been my entire life. So I certainly know what is an earthquake But, I think in general the way the USGS is handling their website and quake reporting etc is just atrocious. But, then I don't trust it as a reliable source any more at all. They reported the Northridge California Quake as an 6.4 when it was somewhere in the region of an 8+, just because there is a federal mandate that funding has to be released if an quake registers over 7 something. And, they didn't want to pay out.

We had a tiny earthquake here last year and it scared me soooo much and the door was shaking and I thought someone was trying to break through the door.
We had a big bang which happened about a month or so ago and it shook all the windows and doors and shook all the shop shutters.

I suppose what we need to know is have you experienced these tremors in that area before? If these tremors (i.e. too small to be reported by USG) are a new phenomena then there is something going on that is new. What could be causing these tremors is an obvious question to ask. We know why the USG is not reporting them (too small), but if these are a new occurence happening across the country, then we need answers.

On the site they post even 1's and low 2's, the one I experienced was a high 2 or low 3, so hardly not big enough to be posted.

I was sitting out on my porch the other day and felt a slight tremor as well. Weird to say the least. Perhaps we are earth sensitives. Just a thought here. Is gaia speaking to us?

Southern tip of Illinois huh, then you are practically my neighbor as I live across the big muddy in MO. I didn't feel anything out of the ordinary but then again, I was was working nights in a huge hospital where there are always carts and beds that shake the the floor a bit. My dad lives in S. Illinois and he hasn't reported anything either. I have been bracing myself and staying prepared as this is the New Madrid fault and would not be surprised if our fault became active sooner rather than later as this seems to be the trend, not to mention the lubrication of the fault itself last spring with the levee breech. Stay safe!

Hi Neighbor!! Well I am not right on the tip, but not to far. You are right, I have been holding my breath about the new madrid fault as well. Time will tell.

i always feel my bed shaking a little at night-probably 2-3 times a week. I wake my wife my telling her by to stop twiching her legs or whatever she's doing and she always says she wasn't doing anything. I live in north central MA. have been there for about 2 1-2 years and this has been happening that whole time. It hasn't concerned me enough to research it, however. I live by an air force base and a larelgy wooded area. My wife has daid she has heard a few loud bangs during the day-like explosions.
