    Default How to make fire

Okay, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I thought this was pretty cool. It's one of those "MacGyver" things we all should know for emergencies....

i just tried doing this and failed.

I only had mandarin oranges though...or maybe it was a clementine...they're called cuties hahah.

my rock kept getting wet and the orange was sliding around. very cool though!!!

Mandarin orange would be too soft. Good orange would be tight with one of those thick skins. Mandarin is more tangerine than orange.

LMFAO.... notice that the camera did not capture the orange lighting. I think he squirted lighter fluid down in the orange and lit it and thus we have the part the camera does catch.

I suggest a better thing to keep on hand are cotton balls soaked with vaseline which burn much better for longer and help you build a very successful fire.

Here is another idea for those old used up candles, use them to make fire pads:

Whenever I went hiking in the woods I'd always bring a few hard guitar picks and a lighter. Not the nylon ones, but the really thick unbend-able kind (there's two main types of material used for guitar picks - nylon and something else -- I'm referring to the "something else" kind . When lit, they'd burn violently for about 20 seconds (the thin ones burn much faster). The make incredible helpers for starting fires (especially if you have no paper or damp stuff to work with) if you have no lighter fluid or other accelerant.

Yeah, it is a put-on-he pours some methylated spirits or similar at that moment when the camera goes off-shot--'Oh look it's happening already!'
Oranges are inflammable, the orange oil in the skin, but you cannot ignite the flesh like that with a stick..lol

I bought myself a fire stick. It's basically flint and steel. Just in case things like lighter fuel and petrol become unavailable.

This orange thing is definitely a hoax.

I love flint and steel. I have used it to start fires when I have a lighter in my pocket. I use a cotton ball to catch the spark and the rest is basic fire making with tinder and kindling. US had some very good ideas for catching sparks as well.

There is a charm to the old ways that really works for me. Lighter s are grat though and I always have one with me. Modern magic. The disposable plastic part really sucks though.
