The Rat Race and success

I was wondering what peoples opinions here were on the subject of employment, the rat race, getting ahead and success.
My story: I moved to London to "better myself" to get a job in post production. So now I work my ass off, we cant pay the bills, we have no friends, we listen to our neighbours scream and roar at each other constantly. It sucks basically. I am beginning to think that I am very much programmed in the way of what is sucess? Pressure to achieve. All I can think about today is moving back to Ireland, living in the countryside, getting a cat and a dog, growing veg etc. but I guess the pressure to succeed according to the world is 50/50. What do you think? How have you experienced this aspect of modern life?

Thanks for your reply people. I guess my post looks very much like I'm looking for advice.. Sorry about that, I'll try to make myself clearer. I trust my inner voice/ my gut and always have. What I'm trying to ask is what opinions do people have here on sucess, employment, getting ahead etc???

People are condition from birth to have limited aspirations. They are constantly told, educated and convinced to seek employment that supports the flaw corrupt systems we live in. You’ll always find work in Law, security, banking and the medical fields. If you have interest in anything else… you will have to put in extra effort and networking.

You may want to check a couple threads I started over a year ago. The rat race and success as it is defined by society is an illusion and slavery.

It wasn’t until I viewed my work and success in the rat race as a tool to achieve a world and life that is “real” for me that peace came into my life.

Thank you blufire, this is exactly what I was looking for. i will read these posts a lot. I have always had that feeling of not wanting to be part of this game of illusion. I am expected to play the game just like everyone else.
Its really cool to read others stories. I am working towards the goal of not supporting this corrupt system. But alas I am in the right place for now.

In Canada we have welfare, so we don't really have to work if we don't feel like it.
Free health care too.

Can't understand anyone wanting to work when there is welfare.

If you rely on the state welfare that puts you basically into the same camp as the parasites who steal our lives. The whole concept is also doomed to fail because eventually the money to pay out to welfare recipients will run out, since eventually those who do work their behinds off wake up to the realisation that they'll be no worse off on welfare than they are working two jobs and being heavily taxed.

I very much doubt this is what conec has in mind with his original post.

Modern life can be a real drag when you are spending it in a way that feels unnatural to you body, mind, and spirit. Conec, have you thought about changing your circumstances and what it would take to do that? Quality beats monetary quantity in my book any day of the week. I had the same feelings living in Vancouver BC, now I'm in Prince Edward Island and finding that I have to work less (I've never been on Welfare by the way ) and that I have space and more quality time with friends and loved ones.

So you are advocating to be a slave, go out and get a job, put up with the mental abuse, physical abuse, drop down on our knees and provide our employer with a jar of Vaseline so they can finish the job with out any resistance, while we urged to cheat and shyster most of the population for the sake of living as a slave? Don't put words in my mouth and don't make assumptions. I never said anything what you are suggesting above. By living on welfare when you are perfectly capable of ensuring an income if you need it you are doing EXACTLY the same thing as the corporations and their various stooges: living like a parasite. You are also shirking responsibility for yourself. There are plenty of people who do not work for corporations, who do not work just to pay their bills; it's all a matter of figuring out what is important, and that's probably different for each individual.

Life isn´t supposed to be uncomfortable.

So, if you are not enjoying your lifestyle right now, you always can change it, if you´re young enough to do so.

I wont say it´s easy, because it isn´t. It requires a lot of courage but it´s better to try now, than to live a life of regrets for not trying.

I have a couple of very creative and talented friends, who could be earning a lot of money working for someone else, but they have simply chosen to live a simpler life and are quite happy about it.

I am a good example of it, in fact. I could have a lot of money and useless stuff right now, however, I´ve chosen to work less and live more.

I was in the exact same position as you are right now. I was unhappy, unhealthy, couldn´t sleep, had not time to learn, study and do what makes me happy.

Now, I can´t buy an expensive car. I can´t afford an expensive house or an expensive lifestyle. The thing is, I sincerely don´t want this stuff in the first place, so why bother?

Once you realize that what you want to be, isn´t the same thing that people want you to be, you realize that other people don´t have the right to demand anything from you, then what´s left is freedom.

Personally, I don´t have much stuff, but I have zero dept to anyone or any institution while some of my friends have a lot of stuff but have become slaves, because it they stop working they will be buried in dept.

Nothing is better than freedom, mate. If I decide to move right now, to another part of the world, all I need is to pack my stuff and go.

Success is about happiness. It doesn´t matter if you´re a millionaire or the perfect model of a successful business man. If you´re not happy, you´re not successful.

Hahahahaha! The most funny part of it, is that, despite my choices, most people think I´m some sort of millionaire, simply because I sincerely consider myself a very successful man and I transpire self-realization!

Sometimes, when I decide to make an exception and buy, as an example, a couple of expensive bottles of wine, even if I don´t have money to buy food for the next month, money just jumps on my hands!

This thing is just amazing! Life is crazy and unpredictable!

I guess that, when you find your path and when you´re truly honest to yourself, you brake off this illusion somehow and nice things just happen, with no apparent reason...

Well, that´s it. I hope you can make the right decisions. I know you can.

By the way, I'm female, I chose this name years ago on music forums because its so male dominated that the young guys would make crude sexual comments if they knew you were a girl. But here obviously its different but I've used that name ever since. Anyway....
As soon as I turned 18 I was straight on the dole in Ireland. I thought I was sticking 2 fingers up to the system, I went to college and got a lot of money in grants, nothing to pay back. In Ireland education WAS highly subsidised during the boom and the Celtic tiger. Its different now. The dole in Ireland is a lot compared to a lot of countries. I was surrounded, even recently by my friends who were on the dole. We saw nothing wrong with it, its like a culture of its own, and sticking 2 fingers up the the system. When I was last unemployed I used the time to research, make videos, read, I wish that was normal life for everyone... not being on the dole/welfare but being able work 25 hours a week, basically having more time to do important things that help us evolve and learn.
This is how I picture an ideal situation, where we are able to spend the majority of our time contributing properly. Do what we are good at.
Now I see working as something so insane, I always wonder what the hell I'm doing, going to this same building for 5 days a week, it just seems like madness, to have to work that much just to live. I realise a lot of people might say, yes obviously conec, move away move away. Everything happens for a reason

PS by the way I dont condone being on the dole, ie taking money that doesnt exist from the PTB, I know better now,

PPS (sorry) I just realised that you guys are describing my ideal scenario lol Working less contributing more! I know it will be a reality for me at some stage, whenever I have a clear image of something in my head, it happens, so it will happen. What I'd like to do is gain enough skill as an editor to be able to make video art. This is where its happening right now, but the reality of getting away is all part of the plan. I dont need money, never have, I ust want to learn.

There is nothing so soul sucking as working 40 plus hours a week at something you hate. Believe me - I am living it.

As a matter of fact, my latest plan to my soul singing again is to cash in what little retirement money I have saved and use it to go back to school (even though I have a degree that most would find appealing - western medicine) and get trained in something more aligned with my ethics (eastern medicine). Yes, I am still paying a debt for the first schooling and will be penniless once I graduate from this new one, but I cannot be a pawn in the Big Pharma game any longer.
