UMD Finding May Hold Key to Gaia Theory of Earth as Living Organism

Is Earth really a sort of giant living organism as the Gaia hypothesis predicts? A new discovery made at the University of Maryland may provide a key to answering this question. This key of sulfur could allow scientists to unlock heretofore hidden interactions between ocean organisms, atmosphere, and land — interactions that might provide evidence supporting this famous theory.

The Gaia hypothesis — first articulated by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis in the 1970s — holds that Earth’s physical and biological processes are inextricably connected to form a self-regulating, essentially sentient, system.

One of the early predictions of this hypothesis was that there should be a sulfur compound made by organisms in the oceans that was stable enough against oxidation in water to allow its transfer to the air. Either the sulfur compound itself, or its atmospheric oxidation product, would have to return sulfur from the sea to the land surfaces. The most likely candidate for this role was deemed to be dimethylsulfide.

Newly published work done at the University of Maryland by first author Harry Oduro, together with UMD geochemist James Farquhar and marine biologist Kathryn Van Alstyne of Western Washington University, provides a tool for tracing and measuring the movement of sulfur through ocean organisms, the atmosphere and the land in ways that may help prove or disprove the controversial Gaia theory. Their study appears in this week’s Online Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Yes Indeed Mother Is A Living Breathing Organism Totally Agree. And Shes been treated pretty poorly hasn't she?. She will respond as she's undergoing some pains. Some say shes going to shift and we need to shift with her. During this process she asks for Peace and Compassion towards one another and all of its lifeforms. Treating Mother with respect is so desired. Now Its Time to get spiritually centered. IMO These Are Two great videos to view.

I´ve always believe in this possibility.

I think it´s very nice that science is now so close to explaining and validating this theory.

The scientific validation of the Gaia hypothesis would be a huge paradigm shift, much bigger than ET disclosure, in my opinion.

One would have to be very foolish to not understand that our Earth is indeed a living, live orgnaism. Just as us to the smallest insect or germ we are all alive and connected to a wonderful energy. I don't doubt it one bit. There's a fine line between symbiosis and parasitism. Just as we have bacteria, and fungi which may either be beneficial or harmful when on or inside our bodies, the planet experiences the same thing. Right now, humans for the large part are acting as parasites.

To me this argument extends in all directions, big and small, to the the extent that everything is a universe within a universe within a universe. The bacteria live, we live, the earth lives, the Sun lives, the galaxy lives, the universe lives. All structures that have some sort of attributable and self-contained/controlled process ongoing within them are living in my opinion. If a structure has at least two processes ongoing which are related to each other, then that is the most basic level of consciousness for me.

We know that there are millions of related processes, including thought going on inside us humans, and so we have what is compared to say an ant (no disrespect to ants), a high level of consciousness. If we think of all the processes ongoing within the Earth, and there are probably countless ways it relays information to itself that we do not perceive, then it is a conscious being of a far superior intelligence to our own.

When humans try to predict the weather, we say its a chaotic system that isn't predictable, because we have no way of expressing all of the mathematical equations behind it in an elegant way. All we do is try to use some number of iterations of an infinite sequence. However, chaos theory doesn't really exist, because weather (or any system anywhere) is predictable, just not at our level of consciousness, because we lack the intelligence to even know all of the parameters we should be including, let alone how they relate.

(This is also why I do not consider computers intelligent, because they only take processes we already know, and make predictions on them really really quickly - perhaps they are an extension of our own consciousness... but that's irrelevant.)

If something can be predicted, which almost inevitably leads to the ability to control that thing (since you must know the exact parameters governing the system), then who is to say that it isn't being controlled consciously by some intelligence.

If we say that the Earth is far superior in intelligence to us, then it makes sense to say that it has control of the weather, and so it has an extremely powerful tool which it can and does use against us.

And you're right Raf... if people knew the Earth was living, then they could feel compassion for her, or more likely in my opinion they would fear her, as we would any superior intelligence. Either way, it would certainly change how we treat her as a species...

My friend,

I understand your point of view.

However, a true paradigm shift is only possible when something is taken from the belief field to the knowledge field.

For now, we believe that Earth is a living organism but, in fact, we don´t understand it.

When science finally explains it, then we will be able to truly understand it and our civilization will be forced to change in order to adapt to this new paradigm.

That´s why science has always been so important to humanity.

Kind of like science proving that habitual smoking is bad for you, despite the chronic bronchitis that every single regular smoker has had since cigarettes were made available. You'd think everybody would have now stopped smoking since science proved it is bad for you. No, question it has made some impact, but people still trash their bodies and now pay $$ dearly to do so. We can only hope they will show more respect for our Mother.

For a huge change to happen, the huge majority of humans should be, beyond doubts, convinced that such change is absolutely necessary.

Personally, I´ve always believed in the Gaia theory. However, folks like me, you and most people on this forum are minority.

That´s why science is so important in this case. Science is the ultimate confirmation/verification tool for most people in this planet.

Besides, the Gaia theory will look much more interesting when we all could finally understand how this majestic being actually works, and then behave accordingly.

This is the same thing as we, trying to understand our own bodies. Without science, we all would be sure that we are humans and we are alive. However, with science, we can understand how our bodies, which are beautiful organic systems, actually work.

Great post! I am surprised though that it takes a couple of so called "smart" scientists, or wise guys/gals of today to bring this to our attention when we were actually taught and or knew this thousands of years ago.....I agree with Graham Hancock we he says we are a species with amnesia.

I see this stuff just like I see the Large Hadron Collider. I know it exists; I know a little bit of what it´s supposed to do; I suspect about the results it´s supposed to achieve.

However, I don´t fully know or understand how it works.

Knowing how something really works, even if this something is originally simple, takes us to another level and opens a huge branch of new possibilities!

I have an inkling everyone knows their spiritual responsibility for the Earth somewhere inside, like some baby's instinct for its mother, but it's lost. The atheism of modern science is such that it only recognises its service to society, and the atheism of modern society is such that it only recognises that what science tells it. Most people have forgotten there is room for anything else. TPTB have controlled science to make sure there is no room for anything else. When people don't actually have the time or freedom to go out and realise the beauty of the world without the burden of artificial stress, how are they meant to remember who they really are? I can't even do it, knowing all that I know. I don't remember. It is knowledge known and somehow forgotten all at the same time, but at least it is remembered in my words.

This is a great discussion. To me, it has always been obvious that Earth is a living organism. In regards to modern farming, and modern living, we as humans are killing our mother Earth.

I have always found it incredible that farmers think they can kill all the worms and insects that are on the crops without destroying the ecosystem which supports those crops. That experiment has failed miserably. When I was a kid, part of the fun of going shopping with mom was to find an apple with a worm in it. Worms in your apples is a sign of a healthy ecosystem. When insects start to munch on fruits and vegetables, the fruits start to release a survival hormone which is extremely beneficial to humans, turning that ordinary fruit into a sort of superfood.

There is absolutely no question in my mind that the rise of these "diseases of modern times" are directly related to the spraying and dumping of toxins directly on mother Earth, and directly on our food supply. After world war two the establishment decided to use all of the by-products of their nuclear bomb development commercially in agriculture, and pest control and the result has been a perpetually sick planet and perpetually sick humans.

Capitalism is the vehicle through which unscrupulous people poison the Earth. It seems to be socially acceptable to poison the Earth as long as you are making a buck in today's society. This is a point of view that is going to have to change if we are going to pull out of this planet poisoning phase we are going through, and realize a Golden Age.

Rubbish! They find time for TV. Making excuses and blaming the PTB for our continuing poor choices perpetuates the victimhood that neuters the population at large into useless whining zombies. When Lovelock presented the Gaia theory decades ago it was an instant recognition and aha, IMO. Of course, you had to be watching educational TV, (PBS in the USA in those days) instead of Wheel of Fortune or even Star Trek to know he was positing such an idea in the first place.
