Lightning storm question

[Lost Soul]

For almost two hours (2000 hrs to present) now there has been a lightning storm in SE Colorado. No fewer than 8 seconds pass before the night skies light up again. It also doesn't seem to move either and the lightning seems to stay in the same area. Very little thunder is heard and virtually no wind. Any explanations?

Many years ago I asked my Mom about a similar phenomenon occurring sometimes over the woods behind our home. Various answers included "car headlights from the main road" (a couple of miles away, and no way could it be headlights) and "summer lightning" ... without any thunder? Whatever was happening was easily enough to light up the clouds all around for some distance, and I am still none the wiser.

Ask a meteorology forum, they will be well qualified to answer.

There simply MUST be thunder (lightning creates an explosion), but wind direction must be significantly reducing its volume where you are.

I doubt there is anything particularly unusual about the storm you are (or probably by now were) experiencing.

Saw a massive storm of lightning years ago in australia it was close to the coast. it was so impresive i left the highway to observe it better.it was right in front of me ,no sound ,no wind just a massive ball of cloud,and lightning continuously inside it.was one of the most spactacular things id ever seen. later ,talking to others about it ,they called it sheet lightning and brushed it of.........sheet lightning my ass!

Hi Lost Soul, Colorado is a known lightning hot spot, just like here in Florida. If there are no conclusive wind currents, a storm can build up and expend it's entire energy in one spot. This is spectacular to watch at night, and I seldom miss out on those occassional nocturnal visual treats.

As far as no sound from the intense lightning? My guess would be that the storm is so big, it's farther away than it looks. 15 miles seems to be about the extent thunder can usually be heard. I've seen spectacular displays that were 50+ miles away, and of course not a whisper of sound.

two feet of hail in colorado ?? strange storms ?? one word... HAARP . the photon belt we're going through isn't helping matters. Our solar system is exposed to the sun's power without the shield of the spiral arms of the milkyway , we go inbetween the spiral arms basically the sheilds are down scotty .red alert, red alert, all hands , battle stations, contact starfleet, it's been 25,920 years since anyone has seen this part of the sky .... lightning will be crazy just like everything else with electricity. the sun is peaking ....

I wonder if they were talking about heat lightning?

We live in a wondrous world. Oh what discoveries our many numbers might find. Particularly if we humans can become more aware of our surroundings. ~This world and its never ending wonders. This year I also saw very white lighting with no sound. Very odd, you could feel the energy from the lightning.
