Default 'Girl's Softball Miracle' or Caring over Competing

I saw this vid referenced over at Steve Beckow's site and think it deserves a wider showing.

Sport is one very effective way we are partitioned off and controlled, and it is refreshing to see moments like these. The ethos of competition which is drilled into all of us over all disciplines from a very early age takes a back seat to decency and doing the right thing.

So many times I question how much could be achieved with the energy that is so regularly expended in sport and competition. With that (wo)man power we could clean up the environment, plant fruit trees in public places and achieve common societal goals.

As I pondered over this article, I suddenly remembered a "similar incident" that happened approximately 18 years ago.

My youngest son, who is 29 now, was playing junior league baseball on the 10-12 year old squad,....and I was an assistant coach for the team. The "opposing team" we were playing, which was in first place in the division, was beating us pretty handily one day. Their pitcher was the son of their head coach,....and had been "mowing down" our players throughout the course of the game. Our "catcher", who was actually the best player in the league, had come to the plate and consequently drove a fierce line-drive up the middle and struck the pitcher squarely on the hip as he leapt and tried to avoid the ball. It was a very ''wicked" line drive,....and I can still remember the "scream of agony" that came out of this young man's lungs. He then crumpled to the ground and began to squirm and kick violently. The game was immediately halted as both coaching staffs rushed the field to help the 12 year old out. When we got there, he was crying and sobbing,......."it" was literally a heart wrenching thing to "hear" and to behold!

I'll never forget the feeling I had, then, of "complete compassion" that enveloped me and caused me to "hover over him" and to console him the best I could. His father, meantime, was standing off to the side seemingly somewhat unconcerned. I couldn't believe what I was seeing!! After a "few moments" of allowing the young man to regain his composure ,somewhat,.... I felt compelled to scoop him up in my arms,....even though he wasn't my son,....or my player,..... and carried him to the sidelines,....to the opposite dugout,....and placed him on the bench there. I then gave him a genuine "pat on the back" and assured him that he would be O.K.

The boy's father, meantime, observed this "event" at a distance, seemingly to be only "mildly concerned". You know,....I really can't remember receiving a "thank you" from the "father", either,........not that I wanted one for what I had done anyway.

I'm sure glad our "Heavenly Father" doesn't treat us that way!

I'm sure glad He "really cares"!!

    1 Peter 5:6-7
    King James Version (KJV)

6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Once again,....thank you for such an "uplifting, inspirational post"!

    Love and Peace,......kreagle
