It's been a full month since WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange entered the Ecuadorian Embassy in London and asked the South American nation for political asylum. In the meantime, his whistleblower website has remained active, releasing 2.5 million emails linked to the Syrian government. How much longer will the site last though? RT's Abby Martin brings us the latest on Julian Assange's quest for asylum.

As the US government claims war on whistleblowers and demands the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and others, the case of Bradley Manning has been brought to light once again. The US Army soldier who allegedly revealed government secrets has been jailed for over two years and reportedly tortured for "aiding the enemy." Pre-trial hearings are underway once again with his case, and RT's Abby Martin brings the latest from Jessup, Maryland.

The New York Times unveiled some findings about a major surveillance operation by the Food and Drug Administration of its own employees. In fact the Times paints an in-depth picture of the length FDA officials went to to monitor its employees' communication on every level. The FDA says it was in response to employees suspected of leaking confidential information about the safety and design of medical devices. Employees have filed a lawsuit over the issue. To talk more about this all, RT's

Manning = Plant, fake, "fall guy" (I work on classified systems here and when deployed, he could not have done what was said he did...)

Anonymous = interesting, but I'm starting to think its being either CO-opted or allowed to continue for further lock downs on "cyber security", if it hasn't yet it will be, too good an opertunity to miss.


the only REAL thing I see here is the FDA thing; and I REALLY LIKE R.T. too :-/ I guess hopping for one source of unspoiled news is too much to ask for these days.

Yes... RT (Russia Today) -- and also Al Jazeera. (I've recently been particularly impressed with Al Jazeera -- which can be compared to the best of CNN and the BBC World Service merged into a truly world-class English-language global news service.)

Yes... RT (Russia Today) -- and also Al Jazeera. (I've recently been particularly impressed with Al Jazeera -- which can be compared to the best of CNN and the BBC World Service merged into a truly world-class English-language global news service.)

OK for RT... but beware Qatar based Al Jazeera which has become particularly biased re : Libya, Syria, etc...

Al-Jazeera’s Beirut Bureau Chief Ghassan Ben Jeddo has resigned over what he described "biased" coverage of Middle East revolutions by the Qatari-based satellite channel.

The renowned Tunisian-born journalist and television presenter tendered his resignation earlier this month for a number of reasons, most importantly Al-Jazeera’s "lack of professionalism and objectivity" in covering the ongoing revolutions in Middle Eastern countries, including Yemen and Bahrain, As-Safir reported Friday.

There has been no official confirmation from Al-Jazeera management as to whether Ghassan’s resignation has been accepted.

"Ghassan Ben Jeddo believes Al-Jazeera TV news channel no longer pursues an independent and unbiased policy, and quite conversely, is in pursuit of a certain type of policy regarding the brewing uprisings in the region," As-Safir reported.

The Tunisian journalist said the Qatari-based satellite channel has launched a smear campaign against the Syrian government and has turned into "a propaganda outlet," the report added.

The report added that while the station covered the events in Libya, Syria and Yemen, it barely mentioned the bloodshed in Bahrain.

People in Bahrain have been holding anti-government protests since February 14, demanding constitutional reforms as well as an end to the Al Khalifa monarchy.

Demonstrators maintain that they will continue to protest until their demands for freedom, constitutional monarchy, and a proportional voice in the government are met.

The peaceful popular movement in Bahrain has been violently repressed, leaving scores of anti-regime protesters killed and many others missing.

Prior to joining Al-Jazeera in 1997, Ben Jeddo worked for the BBC network, the London-based Al-Hayat daily and in a number of other Arab newspapers.

He is the only journalist to have interviewed the Hezbollah Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah, during the Israel-Lebanon conflict. Ben Jeddo has also interviewed Leader of Lebanon’s Progressive Socialist Party Walid Jumblat and former Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

Syrian regime on the brink

Hundreds of emails purportedly written by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad show he sent several sexist or irreverent messages in the months before the ongoing Syrian uprising began.

The French website owni.fr has published extracts from the latest cache of Syrian documents made available by WikiLeaks, which on July 5 started releasing some 2.5 million emails it said were from Syrian political figures.



Of those emails, 538 were supposedly written by Assad himself, sent from the address samalshahba.com and mostly written before the uprising that has lasted 16 months and so far killed 17,000 people.

The emails published yesterday shed little new information on the deadly crackdown but give a glimpse into Assad's puerile and slightly misogynistic mindset.

"Wife: I wish I was a newspaper, so I'd be in your hands all day," begins one of the jokes in an email dated December 23, 2010.

"Husband: I too wish that you were a newspaper, so I could have a new one every day."

The messages were sent to close associates, his female translator or his father-in-law. Some are jokes that had already been circulated online, others are related to the news or world leaders.

Another joke contained in the same email starts with a woman asking her husband what he would give her if she climbed Mt Everest.

"A lovely push...!" is the punchline.

WikiLeaks has said the 2,434,899 emails came from Syrian ministries including foreign affairs, finance and presidential affairs. There are around 400,000 emails in Arabic but also 68,000 in Russian.

WikiLeaks' latest publication comes amid continued wrangling among world powers about how the Syrian conflict should be tackled.

Russia and China on Thursday vetoed a UN Security Council resolution on Syria for the third time, sparking outrage by the Western nations, which demanded sanctions against Assad.

IT'S official, WikiLeaks has failed - at least according to hacker group Anonymous.


Anonymous is setting up a new WikiLeaks style website and WikiLeaks isn't happy about it.

So convinced are they of this that members have decided to set up their own data dump website committed to political transparency.

The site is called Par:AnoIA, which stands for "Potentially Alarming Research: Anonymous Intelligence Agencies".

It aims to pick up where WikiLeaks apparently let the hackers down, by finding a better way to present large amounts of data that is appealing and easy for users to read.

"The reason no one cares about these leaks, as a general rule of thumb, is that they can’t do anything with [them],” a Paranoia volunteer told Wired.

“Basically, [we're] making it accessible to anyone that wants to do something with it, in a proper usable format.”

The volunteer said the purpose of the site was to get information out faster than the rollout WikiLeaks plans, which could take years.

"I'm pretty sick of these 20-year-plans," the volunteer said.

The site will accept submissions from Anonymous members and then design and present the content.

WikiLeaks has reacted on Twitter by accusing Anonymous of using insecure proxy servers, meaning user identities could be revealed.

It also hinted that the Anonymous Twitter account was being directed by law enforcement.

Anonymous responded with a stinging reply not suitable for a family friendly website.

Meanwhile, the former head of WikiLeaks Julian Assange is still trying to negotiate political asylum in Ecuador. The country's ambassador expressed concerns last month that granting his request could damage Equador’s relationship with the US.

Today it has released half a million documents gathered within 24 hours of the 9/11 attack. So it seems that despite the political turmoil faced by Assange for Wikileaks it's business as usual. RT spoke with the whistleblower's lawyer Baltasar Garzon for the latest development in his case.
