Default Anonymous internet search engine : STARTPAGE.com

    -------

This may be very useful advice for many members and guests.

Startpage and Ixquick (both created by the same company) are the most secure and private search engines. IP addresses are never recorded.

This contrasts with Google, which tracks and records everything you search for. The information is used for personal profiling, and can be accessed by any government's supercomputers.

It's simple to add Startpage to Firefox and Safari (the two browsers I use). With Firefox, adding it is instant. With Safari, it takes about a minute or so to configure.

Startpage then comes up in the search bar as a straight replacement for Google. After you make the change, you may wonder why you never did it before.

Startpage is excellent! I am trying to switch away from everything that's being traced and tracked. I heard this company will start a email service that's encryted and anonymous this year. I'd be prepared to pay for it.

I've started using the TOR browser, which is like an internet proxy. I like it, but it's very slow compared to google chrome, etc.

I'm glad you mentioned this...I would gladly switch over my email once they get up and running. I hadn't heard anything in quite some time, so I was wondering the status of their launch date.

I heard Katherine Albreight in an interview say she is going to start the email service this year. I'll try to find this interview and post it here. By the way, encrypted emails will only work if the recipient has the same email application, so we will all have to get our friends/family to sign up too. But I bet businesses will sign up straight away!!

    Yup

I recommend Thunderbird with GnuPG and Enigmail . I've been using it since at least 2005 or before, on Windows, Mac and Linux.

I also use "startpage" and next to that i use http://yippy.com/

About privacy, from the Yippy website.

"You may have noticed that when you visit Yippy within our toolbar frame, that the URL in your address bar doesn't change, even if you are on a different web page inside Yippy. This is because we protect your privacy by not recording any of your search terms or sites you visit while you are on Yippy. If you check the history in your browser, you will see only Yippy.com, not all of the other sites you visited while you were using Yippy in Privacy Mode. Yippy never records any search terms or sites at any time in any mode, but your PC does if not in Privacy Mode."

I have been (and still am) using IXQUICK as my homepage for years. Absolutely agree with the benefits extolled here. Unlike Google which is an "active" webpage, Ixquick and Startpage can be set to "passive" ie no type monitoring, no graphics etc. The settings page for ixquick is user friendly and configurable to your use rather than that of corporate influence. It is a METASEARCH engine and uses sub search results from other search engines. Ixquick satisfies approximately ninety percent of my searches, the remainder are other search engines to correlate the strength/depth of those found on ixquick. Am currently very satisfied with its performance.

Not forgetting it provides a proxy link to each webpage listed in your search so not only does it not record YOUR searches but it enables you to visit sites anonymously.

This TED presentation highlights the problems and the malevolence of enforced compartmentalisation we are being subjected.

Yes, we use Google in several ways, including at least:
    • We use Google translate to provide the option to translate any page into other languages.
    • We use Google email servers for some forum administration and applications tasks.
    • We allow the Google bots to index our forum (many times a day) for their search engine.

Excellent recommendation, thank you. I was looking for a substitute for all the small search engines which are by far, less efficient than google. I have a couple of questions about privecy and the best use of our computures as well as of health relations and the use of our computure, so it is helpful that you share your findings here. one small question, not really important - why would the same company operate two different search engins, aka STARTPAGE and IXQUICK? (Paul, back to you )

They started out with Ixquick, but I kinda wondered if they made the change because of the pronunciation....whenever Kathryn announced it on air, it was quite difficult to understand what she was saying...so that could have had an effect. Maybe Paul knows different....

The most important thing is that there will be subtle differences in search results.

Like two images of approximately 500 people. One has 499 people. Spot the difference.

    Things that google somehow..misses.

I did a search for 'tom bearden' with Google and then startingpage.

the Google search missed one that is a near complete distillation of the Bearden website and Bearden's work. A simplified sum total distillation of what his work means.

Google somehow manged to miss the one that puts all the dots together, regarding Tom Bearden.

I wonder why that happened? Fancy that...

My point is that before search engines where filtered, like they are now..I used to find the most amazing websites and amazing info. Over the past 4-5-6 years, most of that has somehow...disappeared.

Using startingpage brings quite a bit of that - back.
