tone3jaguar, This news story is confusing and the Coast Guard spokesperson is contradicting themselves. in the timeline of 12:04 and 12:11 they say it is NOT an oil platform then they say IT IS but it isn't currently producing. there is an oil sheen 1 mile by 100 feet. My thought is this --If it is not an oil rig and its in 2,500 feet of water then what is its function??? Are platforms built as support systems to the oil rig industry or for some other purpose?? And most importantly what is the safety and repair record lately for this platform and the owners-- Mariner-- I believe the report called them. Perhaps structures in the Gulf and elsewhere that "appear" to look like oil rigs are used for some other purpose below the surface or off planet. Now there's a conspiracy theory.
It is a processing platform. It does not drill, but it had oil on board.
