My favorite line of his follows. Contemplating this single line long ago taught me much.

and in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make

A sad day indeed. I remember getting the 'Double Fantasy' album that Christmas.

huge hero of mine. not many know this, but Lennon had a ufo experience atop his dakota building in nyc. was so close "i could have thrown a stone at it" he said. he also dabbled in what was thought of as the "occult" at the time: numerology, psychics, witchcraft etc...he had a relationship with uri geller, and was said to have given him a golden egg given to him by one of the alien beings he encountered(according to Geller). was one of the first mainstream celebs to make things like meditation hip, with his trip to India with the rest of the Beatles to visit the maharishi (he later denounced the man as a phony, and wrote a song about it too: sexy sadie)

and of course there were all his contributions to peace - free concerts, demonstrations, "bag events", "bed-ins" etc...oh, and the music, which was brilliant.

this was a man with a sharp moral compass, and loads of courage. i put him next to muhammad ali on the list of luminaries that make up my mount rushmore of important 20th century figures.
