Default Fourmile Fire: Dozens of structures, 7,120 acres burned, says Boulder County sheriff

The Fourmile Fire has burned dozens of structures and 7,120 acres in the Boulder County foothills, Sheriff Joe Pelle said at a 1:30 p.m. news conference, although specific losses have not been made public.

Nine firefighters have lost their homes in the blaze, which started Monday morning and is still burning unabated. The fire has forced the evacuation of 1,000 homes in 70 subdivision northwest of Boulder, and more evacuations are expected northeast of the fire, Pelle said.

He confirmed that investigators are looking into whether the fire was caused by a car hitting a propane tank in Fourmile Canyon.

There are several people who have refused to evacuate, but still no reports of deaths or injuries, Pelle said.

The state of Colorado has declared an emergency and given $5 million to the firefighting effort, which will be taken over at 6 p.m. by a federal "Type II" team.

"We have literally exhausted our local resources," Pelle said. "Pray for rain."

Gov. Ritter, who attended the news conference after touring areas of fire damage this morning, asked for people to be patient as they wait for news of what happened to their homes
