If I remember correctly (from an earlier interview) it as about the size of a 20 foot container.

in 1987 aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour astronaut Gordon Cooper photographed a mysterious object orbiting the Earth and estimated that it was 30 meters in diameter. many believe this was the Black Knight Satellite.

With so much space junk in orbit it is really hard to tell what is what anymore, unless of course the object comes and goes out of orbit and does maneuvers, but then it can't be there therefore it isn't. NASA will always come up with an explanation.

They detected it in the same time frame just after the first sputnik ... there wasn't that much spacejunk then.

Again where does this get us? NASA will not admit to it regardless...and people as a whole, won't want to believe any other than a conventional explanation, it is a conform zone.

Hello everyone: Does anyone have more information on this "black knight satellite"?
Is this why both poles are off limits through google earth. I am not in the know but have been told that both poles are blacked out on google earth. Is this true and why if it is?

This reminds me of a book Philip.K.Dick wrote in the 60's called 'The Zap Gun':

This Black Knight alien satellite story is potentially very interesting and I've been doing a bit of armchair research. However…

At least one inconsistency - sloppily repeated over and over which could lend the story credibility - is that the Black Knight satellite was in a polar orbit, yet was "shadowing" (i.e. following) the USSR's Sputnik 1 in 1957. Apparently it was not possible to launch a satellite into a polar orbit by either the US or USSR at the time. Fair enough, that's probably true. So if it was in a polar orbit, how come it was shadowing Sputnik 1 which was not in polar orbit? (Anyway, surely something following a satellite is most likely to be the final stage of its booster rocket isn't it?)

The size of the satellite has been widely reported, presumably estimated by the intensity of radar returns - although anyone familiar with how radar works will know these are a very unreliable guide. (For example, the deliberate design of radar reflector for small boats to give an apparent reflection from something much bigger and more visible on radar, and the opposite of course with stealth aircraft.) But weight is also repeatedly stated to be “about 15 tons”. Now how is it possible to estimate the weight of an orbiting object? This cannot be ascertained by orbital speed, which depends upon altitude, not weight/size/mass.

There may well be some truth in the story. But clarifications to the above and answers to the following would give it more authority:

• Where is the evidence that it was really “tracked by NASA” on its reappearance in 1960?
• Did the US Department of Defence really commission Dr Clyde Tombaugh (discoverer of Pluto) to study these reports?
• And if so, what and where are his findings?

Then there’s all the vague stuff about ham radio operators receiving “strange coded messages” and long delay echoes, with one ham apparently decoding them into a star chart.

These questions unlikely to be answered now, but who received the signals? How did they determine the messages were from the Black Knight? On what frequencies were they received? And what did the messages consist of? Voice? Morse code? Other?

I understand that non-technical reporters gloss over these details (as is often the case with any technical story), but when such stories are reported, these absent facts should be ringing alarm bells amongst readers equipped with any level of critical thinking.

Oh, and the photos… Well any good photo is usually labelled a fake, and a bad photo labelled as “could be anything”, so you can’t win! I think these fall into the “good” photo category.

Unfortunately this all points to typical internet "factoids" that become accepted as facts only by repetition. On closer examination this is another story that starts to disintegrate.

No doubt if such an alien satellite ever did exist, some agency would have grabbed it by now…

As I understand it, Tesla first received transmissions from space, initially believing they had come from Mars but later understanding they had come from much closer -- from this satellite.

I recall a number of panicked accounts from both the Russian and American sides much later on as to what exactly this was, prior to either side entering orbit or releasing any satellites into space. I also understand it was the reason for a number of constructions and space missions after that point.

Recently, NASA slipped some images of what is purported to be the Black Knight satellite. Not surprisingly, the high resolution images were quickly deleted. Surprisingly, the low resolution images remain.

As far as I know, Tesla (genius as he certainly was) didn't receive any signals from space, or the Black Knight satellite. What he probably did receive were 'tweeks', 'whistlers' and the 'dawn chorus'. These are signals from lightning trapped in Earth's magnetosphere and are often audible in ELF, VLF and LF spectrum and can be received on fairly simple equipment. Audio recordings here. They were very mysterious to early radio pioneers, and all sorts of theories were suggested, including possibly interplanetary communication.

For a thorough examination of the whole Black Knight story, I recently found this.

The photos you posted were taken by the STS-88 astronauts aboard the Endeavor, and the object was moving about the same speed and along the same path as the orbiter. By all accounts it was a piece of thermal blanketing that broke loose from the cargo bay during an EVA. But they would say that wouldn't they...

Hi, Folks... I just found this thread. This thing — whatever it is! — was photographed on Space Shuttle Mission STS-088. I spent quite some time looking at this back in 2009.

You can get the co-ordinates of the photos from the NASA source references. The shuttle was orbiting eastwards from the Atlantic towards Namibia and Botswana in Southern Africa.
