Eiffel Tower evacuated after bomb alert

Police cleared the landmark and its surrounding park, the Champ de Mars, the French AFP news agency reported.

About 25,000 people were in the area at the time but they left calmly shortly before 2100 local time (1900 GMT), a police officer said.

The 324m (1,063ft) iron lattice tower, built in 1889, is one of the world's most popular tourist attractions.

Those evacuated were moved to the banks of the nearby River Seine.

Police with sniffer dogs are carrying out a search of the area, French media reported.

PARIS (AFP) – Police evacuated tourists from the Eiffel Tower in Paris on Tuesday after the second bomb alert this month at one of the world's most visited sites.

The latest alert came amid official warnings that France faces a serious threat of imminent terrorist attack and just a day after a major Paris train station was evacuated after a bomb alert that proved to be a false alarm.

Police said the operator of the Eiffel Tower had received a phone call from a public telephone at 18:40 pm (1640 GMT) warning of a bomb. Police experts were now scouring the 324-metre (1,063-feet) high tower for suspect devices.

Police on September 14 evacuated around 2,000 people from the tower and the park surrounding it following a bomb alert that also turned out to be a false alarm.

It's the second time in two weeks already. And earlier this week a train station, I thought it was Saint Lasare, had been cleared due to a bom threat.

The official statement says France is at a higher security state right now due to leads suggesting the northern african branche of Al-Quaida is supposingly planning to bomb a French target.

I sure hope they don't bomb the Eiffel tower, masonic or not it's a beauty, and its destruction would make most french an easy target for a pro war campaign considering the french don't like to be struck at their pride.

Next to being a nucleair power, they have the largest naval fleet of Europe, as such the French Armed Forces constitutes the largest military in the European Union in terms of man-power and the third largest in NATO. In addition the French Armed Forces have 419,000 Reserves, and 101,666 law enforcement Gendarmerie (military trained policemen).
As of 2009, the French Armed Forces have the third highest expenditure of any military in the world, according to the SIPRI. As well as the third largest nuclear force in the world, only behind the United States and Russia.
Their airforce and weaponsystems are all high-tech French made. They don't rely on anyone for their military equipment nor satellite intel as they have their own esa satellites in orbit,


Up to now they've been peaceful in the so called "war on terrorism", not supporting the Iraqi war.
But it's a sleeping beast we don't want to awake... I seriously hope there won't be another false flag terror attack staged on his belly.

I'm not bragging about the French military here... I'm scared as hell they might actually use it...
