Pretty ballsy stuff you're putting out there Tony, I like it! The Yin/Yang symbol is not just another pretty picture(LOL), and it's meaning is also not for the faint of heart.

I too was thinking about the yin and yang in response to this question.. I remember reading a statement attached to the symbol, which has always stuck in my mind, in regards to the symbol itself and the point in question.
It was simply "opposites compliment one another". So yeah, I think that Satan (dark) is a necessary compliment to God (light), which the two work together to create harmony and balance of sorts.

Yin Yang - "Two sides of the same coin" or the same one thing viewed from different perspectives. Neither exists without the other (notice the small dots inside the larger areas) ie nothing is completely negative or positive (ie absolutist thinking). Look at what is in between

Altho it may seem frivolous, Tim Burton's movie, "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is an excellent metaphor of this dualistic principle.

Satan "WAS" necessary --- nothing unnecessary exists----however times they are a changing.
Good to see you posting Tony--as always thought provoking.

What if Satan never ever existed?
Is it's just a bogey man, a conjured up fantasy, like Father Christmas?
Something to believe in, or to fear.

What if the word Satan merely referred to those internal negative emotions,
that limit or obscure our view, our pure perception?

Words like 'Satan' and 'Ego' describe something that does not exist,
    like a barren women's son.

Satan/demon/evil is only our own likes and dislikes.
When our hopes and fears are clearly seen,
we are free from their effects.
That is why they are of value!
When not seen, they are in control.
When seen clearly, in the first instant, they are pure perception itself.
But we don't notice this, and so it develops into a negative energy.

There are entities that feed off our emotions - our pride, jealousy,
anger, fear and desires: they are all around us, in all *sentient being.
Show me a sentient being who does not have these negative qualities.
Satan is our own disturbing emotions, indivisible with the potential of enlightenment.

    From an enlightened perspective, S a t a n is a meaningless word!

Satan is just a metaphor for our own selfish stubbornness.
When we indulge in negative energy, we attract more.
We see this all too often, and can counter this with the positive energy of
    knowledge, understanding and wisdom.

    * There are sentient beings in the form and formless realms.
