    Default Eywa has had enough!

Eywa (the living entity taking care of Pandora's nature in the Avatar movie) seems to have woken up within Russia:

Russian angry birds: Crows 'attack' MPs cars with stones

In a scene reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock's thriller The Birds, a gang of crows has stoned several expensive vehicles parked near a regional legislative body in the Russian Urals, prompting internet jokes about possible political motives.

“When leaving the office, I saw a group of drivers of ministers’ and deputies’ cars who were moving chaotically and swinging their arms,” local lawmaker Maksim Ryapasov wrote in his blog.

The drivers told the MP that fuss was caused by crows that were grabbing rocks from the roof of the building and “bombarding” cars with them for several hours.

The MP noted that there is a “stone garden” on the assembly’s roof, which was set up under the initiative of the legislature’s chairwoman Lyudmila Babushkina. Apparently, it was those stones the crows used as weapons.

As a result of the “bird protest,” the windshields of at least three cars were broken.

“I really don’t know whose cars were there. But I personally saw a crow that threw a stone and then flew to get another one from the terrace,” Ryapasov, the head of Liberal-Democratic fraction in the regional parliament wrote. “I’m not kidding,” he added.

The news has become a hit in the Russian blogosphere. In a battle of wits, users are actively discussing the “protest action” of “politically-active birds.”

Experts though have their own explanation for birds’ “extremism.” Most likely, the crows were simply having fun, ornithologist Tatiana Surkova told ‘Aktualno’ information agency.

“Crows love collecting different items, including stones, and piling them somewhere or throwing them down,” she said.

We watched three crows play a game with a poor cat in our backyard. The crows would take turns buzzing the little cat. Kitty didn't know which way to turn or run, as they came at it from all directions. They took up post on the corners of our fence, rotating the take off and landings among the 3 crows using 4 corners of the yard. A very eleborate plan that took planning and execution on their part. Smart birds!

Killer elephant halts rampage to save baby girl

Date March 14, 2014 Deborah Gough

A killer tusker elephant – a wild elephant with tusks – was on a rampage through a West Bengal village on Monday when it stopped to carefully unearth a crying baby girl beneath the rubble of the house it had begun to demolish.

The 10-month-old's father, Dipak Mahato, told the Times of India that he and his wife were having dinner at about 8pm when they heard a "cracking sound" and a huge crash from the bedroom.

"We ran over and were shocked to see the wall in pieces and a tusker standing over our baby," Mr Mahato said.

"She was crying and there were huge chunks of the wall lying all around and on the cot. The tusker started moving away but when our child started crying again, it returned and used its trunk to remove the debris."

The Times of India reported that the tusker, which had killed three people, carefully removed every last bit of stone, brick and mortar to uncover the baby before heading back to the forest.

The baby's mother, Lalita Mahato, said: "We worship Lord Ganesh [the elephant god] in our village. Still, I can't believe that the tusker saved my daughter after breaking down the door and smashing a wall. We watched amazed as it gently removed the debris that had fallen on her. It's a miracle."

The baby was taken to hospital with external injuries from the falling debris but was "in no danger".

Conflict between humans and elephants in West Bengal's Purulia district has risen over the past few years. Land-use patterns have blocked elephants' traditional migration routes, and herds routinely raid farms and villages and smash houses, according to the Times of India.

Local forest ranger Samir Bose said the same elephant had killed three people and damaged 17 homes in three village areas in the past year.

"What's really surprising is that this elephant left the little girl alive even after damaging the house," Mr Bose said.

"It seems to have a heart, too," he said.

Mr Bose said the lone tusker was last spotted resting in a nearby forest on Tuesday.

Angry dog gets revenge on driver who kicked it by biting car

The stray dog got its revenge (Picture: Rex) You don’t kick this dog and get away with it.

An angry stray that was struck by a motorist decided to get revenge by damaging his most prized possession – his car.

The man kicked the dog because it was lying in his parking spot.

The dog then vanished but came back later with a few of his pack and damaged the car.

It had been kicked by the car’s owner (Picture: Rex)

He was pictured biting at the wheel trims and windscreen wipers outside the flats in southwest China’s Chongqing.

He brought a few friends (Picture: Rex)

The owner wouldn’t have been pleased with the state the car was left in Picture: Rex)

A neighbour took pictures of the incident last week, which he later showed to the driver.

Needless to say, the dog hasn’t been seen since.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can also hurt me.
Stones and sticks break only skin, while words are ghosts that haunt me.
Slant and curved the word-swords fall, it pierces and sticks inside me.
Bats and bricks may ache through bones, but words can mortify me.
Pain from words has left its' scar, on mind and hear that's tender.
Cuts and bruises have not healed, it's words that I remember.

Young gorillas have learnt to dismantle poachers' snares in the wild

    Bec Crew Science Alert
    Mon, 26 Mar 2018 00:00 UTC

    © Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund

Days after a poacher's trap killed a young mountain gorilla in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park in 2012, researchers spotted something remarkable: two four-year old gorillas working together to dismantle similar snares in the area.

"This is absolutely the first time that we've seen juveniles doing that ... I don't know of any other reports in the world of juveniles destroying snares," Veronica Vecellio from the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund's Karisoke Research Centre in Rwanda told National Geographic at the time.

"We are the largest database and observer of wild gorillas ... so I would be very surprised if somebody else has seen that."

Thousands of these snares are set up by local bush meat hunters to catch antelopes and other animals for eating, and while they reportedly have no interest in primates, young gorillas are sometimes unintentionally caught up and left to die.

The traps work by tying a noose to a branch of bamboo stalk, and bending it down to the ground, with another stick or rock used to hold the noose in place. The whole thing is obscured by dry leaves and branches.

When an animal comes along and unknowingly moves the anchoring rock or stick, the branch flings back up and tightens the noose around it, holding it in place till the poachers come looking. "If the creature is light enough, it will actually be hoisted into the air," Ker Than wrote for National Geographic.

While adult gorillas are large and strong enough to extract themselves, young gorillas often are not, and if they don't die from being stuck in the trap, they run a very real risk of dying from injuries sustained during their escape, such as dislocated bones and gangrenous cuts.

This is particularly bad news, seeing as the gorillas in this part of the word - a subspecies of the eastern gorilla called Gorilla beringei beringei - are now critically endangered, and the population simply cannot sustain the consistent loss of young gorillas to snares.

Vecellio and her team were searching the park daily for these traps and dismantling them, but in 2012, one of the local trackers spotted one near the Kuryama gorilla clan, which had lost one of its juveniles to a trap just days earlier.

The tracker, John Ndayambaje, went to dismantle the snare, but was given a warning signal by the dominant male of the clan to back off.

"Suddenly two juveniles - Rwema, a male; and Dukore, a female; both about four years old - ran toward the trap," Than reported.

"As Ndayambaje and a few tourists watched, Rwema jumped on the bent tree branch and broke it, while Dukore freed the noose."

The two gorillas then reportedly found another snare, and with the help of another juvenile, managed to dismantle that one too.

The researchers suspect that the confidence and speed with which they destroyed the traps means these young gorillas had learnt how dangerous they were, and had dismantled them before.

While a great solution would be to have the researchers go out and teach more gorillas how to dismantle these traps, Vecellio and her team said it would be unethical to mess with the gorillas' behaviour to that degree.

They just have to hope the juveniles continue to spread their knowledge throughout the clan on their own.

"No we can't teach them," she told National Geographic. "We try as much as we can to not interfere with the gorillas. We don't want to affect their natural behaviour."
