Default Terrorist attacks in Moscow subways

Two female suicide bombers have blown themselves up aboard packed underground trains at the height of the rush hour in Moscow this morning, killing 38 people and leaving an estimated 65 injured, according to the Russian security service.

President Dimitri Medvedev is due to reassure the nation in a television address later today, pledging no let up in the war against terrorism and promising a security crackdown on public transport.

The first blast came at the Lubyanka station in central Moscow at around 8am (0400 GMT), killing 24 people. The station is deep below the headquarters of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), the successor to the Soviet-era KGB, and is just yards away from the Kremlin.

Around 45 minutes later the second explosion happened a 15 minute journey away at Park Kultury station, near Gorky Park, killing around 12. Both stations are situated on Moscow's busy Red underground line, or line number one.

Quote Doku Umarov, the leader of the Chechen rebel movement, issued an ominous warning in February saying terror would be coming to Russia's big cities in the near future. "Blood will no longer be limited to our (Caucasus) cities and towns," he said. "The war is coming to their (Russian) cities."

Islamist rebels have confined their attacks to the North Caucasus area in recent years but the bombing of a passenger train between Moscow and St.

Petersburg last November that left dozens dead may have been a sign they were about to change tactics.

Russian security forces claim to have killed a number of high profile militants in recent months and analysts say the double suicide bombing on Monday may be the rebels' way of extracting revenge.

Quote Like most Chechen rebel commanders, Doku Umarov has been declared dead on several occasions by the Russian security services.

Quote ISTANBUL, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Islamist rebels in Russia's southern borderland are planning to hit economic targets and are getting arms and money funneled secretly by sympathisers in Kremlin-backed local authorities, according to the brother of Moscow's most wanted guerrilla.

With a trimmed beard and thinning hair, Vakha Umarov bears a striking resemblance to his brother, Doku Umarov, who calls himself "Emir of the Caucasus Emirate". He aims to create a pan-Caucasus, sharia-based state separate from Russia.

Chechen rebel leader Doku Umarov has claimed responsibility for a number of attacks in Russia, including last November's train bombing between Moscow and St Petersburg which killed 26.

His brother Vakha Umarov, who has lived in Istanbul since 2005, denied he was part of the insurgency but said he had regular contact with his brother...

do you really think the population in Russia has any say if the government is going to punish those who caused the attacks?

Quote Lidia Yusupova, a Chechen rights activist, was more alarmist.

"The system will have its hands untied completely," she told The Associated Press. "There will be a crackdown on all walks of life. We have no rights now, but we will have even fewer soon."

Is it your true self talking? Or is it your programmed self? Why do you spend hard earned money to look a certain way? Seriously. What made you think you have to look the way you look? Or sound the way you sound? People are self conscious because we've been trained that way. Perfect little consumers. Pets. Domesticated humans

12 killed in south Russia bombing 2 days after Moscow attacks

Quote Twin blasts rocked Russia's North Caucasus region of Dagestan just two days after 39 people were killed in two subway explosions in Moscow, the region's Interior Ministry said.

The death toll from the explosions in the town of Kizlyar near Chechnya on Wednesday morning currently stands at 12, including 2 terrorists. 29 people were injured.

The first blast occurred at 08:45 Moscow time (04:45 GMT), and the other came 20 minutes later. The explosions occurred some 300 meters from the buildings of the Interior Ministry, Federal Security Service and a school.

"An explosive device was detonated when a car was leaving the city Interior Ministry department. According to preliminary information, two Interior Ministry employees were in the car," investigators said in a statement.

The two police officers were killed by the explosion, which injured several bystanders.

"Around 20 minutes later a suicide bomber, dressed in a police officer's uniform, arrived at the scene where an investigation group was working, and activated an explosive device he had on his body," the statement added.

The suicide bomber has been identified as Daud Jabrailov, a citizen of Kizlyar, Dagestan's Interior Ministry said.
