    A bike........
    Hi Swami,

Good idea, but I can't ride a bike, long story. Guess my 13 year old son will have to carry me pillion passenger, lol, with me carrying a rucksack full of food and me shouting instructions on where to go....

Sorry, but can't help to see the humour in it. LMAO...

    Cheers,
    Lily

As ex military and a survival instructor merely having the intention is not enough. Get your iPod apps and books and go out and PRACTICE! Learn to light fires in all conditions with all types of fire lighting kit. Learn how to build shelters, from basic bivvi, using tarps, debris shelters to more substantial ones. Learn which veg to forrage and what to stay clear of. As to fungi, get expert help, in a short day course in what is good and what kills, or even causes a bad reaction. Learn hobo fishing and snaring. Learn how to use various traps.

You don't have to do it all in one go, but go for a stroll in the woods and practice a little BUT often. Fail of preparation is preparation to fail.

Whats the best kit to carry at all times? A good well made knife and firelighting kit. However, the list below is a basic survival kit that i carry in the car or with me in a bag whenever I go out, away from the masses

    Knife, good quality and sharp
Waterproof matches OR flint and striker ( that may be the old steel and flint or modern magnesium fire steels)
dry tinder (small amount as good stuff can be found in the wild)
Steel cup, military crusader cups are best
    Torch, small cheap, windup
Drinks kit (bag containing tea bags, sugar, dried milk, bovril drink sachet,) only a small amount to give you a few drinks to keep your core warm
    Unlubricated condoms

The above is the very basic. You can go a lot further, but remember you have to carry it.
People too weak to follow their own dreams will always find a way to discourage yours.

According to Tom Brown, priorities are:
    • Priority #1: Shelter. A person can die of hypothermia at 50 degrees F, if wet and in the wind.
    • Priority #2: Water. 24 hrs without water and there is brain damage.
    • Priority #3: Fire. For water purification and cooking.
    • Priority #4: Food. The least necessary element of this group.
