Shots were fired Monday night at the Garden State Plaza mall in Paramus, New Jersey, according to several reports.

“According to a police source, the shooting began near the Nordstrom’s department store on the second level of the mall. At least eight shots have been fired; the gunman is believed to be wearing body armor,” Pix 11 reported.

Pix11 also reports stores are on lockdown and no injuries have been reported.

“Police and SWAT teams from surrounding areas, along with state police, are en route to the scene.”

The mall was closed at 9:30 pm as police swarmed the scene, according to NBC4. The FBI was also reported to be at the scene.

A Bergen County Executive Office spokesperson told News12 that police are doing a store-by-store sweep and that there are no reports of anyone who had been shot. The shooter has yet to be apprehended.

Witnesses told NBC 4 New York a man dressed in all black, including a black helmet, was carrying a rifle and started firing shots inside the mall.

“Some people have been locked down inside stores. One person inside heard at least two bangs,” reports ABC7.

"He was fully armored head to toe, like he planned this. Like it's not like a random thing," a man shopping at the mall at the time who asked for anonymity told NBC4.

"I'm fine, but this is crazy," he added.

A witness told ABC7 of an encounter with the alleged gunman.

"We were walking in the mall just in front of the Apple store, he was wearing black and wearing something on his back, looked like two gas balloons, and then he was walking with a very big rifle, and shooting into the air to the top. Basically walked very calmly, he was approximately 5'5", he was shooting with a very long rifle and he had a very big helmet on him, kind of a black silver helmet," the witness said.

A worker at the Joe's American restaurant in the mall told Fox 5 News he heard shots, then mall security ordered staff to lock all doors.

Another worker at a Talbots store told NBC4 the alleged gunman fired his gun as he walked through the mall.

"When he walked past our store, he looked directly in the store and strolled past," she said. "It was very, very terrifying."

ABC7 tweeted: ”Bergen County Executive’s spokesperson confirms police SWAT responding to an ‘active shooter’ in area of Nordstrom.”

Police have set up a perimeter around the shopping complex, while Pix11 reports there are "an estimated 200 police officers at the scene."

Quote Suspect in New Jersey mall shooting found dead

gunman opened fire in a crowded New Jersey mall late on Monday before killing himself, officials said, sparking a mass evacuation of the complex by police who did not realize he was dead for several hours.

The man shot at least six rounds from a modified rifle seemingly at random and without hitting anyone, before turning the gun on himself in a back area of the mall, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli told a news conference early on Tuesday.Authorities named the dead man as 20-year-old Richard Shoop and said he had a history of drug abuse. Officials found his body in the Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus at around 3:20 a.m. local time.

Police backed by dozens of cruisers had earlier evacuated thousands of people from the mall and launched a manhunt after shoppers reported hearing gunshots sometime after 9 p.m, said Chief of Staff at Bergen County Jeanne Baratta.

Najee Waters, 19, of East Rutherford, New Jersey, was at his sales job at an H&M clothing store when he heard what sounded like two shots ring out.

"It was frantic. Absolutely chaos," said Waters, who followed a practiced store emergency plan and rushed to a break room at the back of the store, where about a dozen workers gathered before dashing out to the parking lot. About 25 customers were in the store at the time.

The shooting occurred two months after a group of al Qaeda-linked militants launched an attack on a mall in Nairobi that killed 67 people.

The Garden State Plaza mall, owned by Australia's Westfield Group, is one of five large malls in Paramus, located about 20 miles northwest of New York City and known as a key destination for shoppers.

This was on the Daily Mail site yesterday.

"The CIA inadvertently gave a terrorist leader the finances and credibility he needed to mastermind a major attack, claims a former spy."

    Inadvertently.
