It is my understanding they are the same thing, I believe he (Burgoyne) says as much, that some call it the eighth sphere. Though I am uncertain where right now.

First thoughts, the dark satellite is like the "moon" of the Eighth Sphere. Either that, or they are the same thing. The descriptions were nearly identical.
