    Humble suggestion.

Why not have a portrait done in order to honor anonymous whistleblowers?

    Okay,

I know it's challenge...would it be possible to paint the image of the Anonymous Whistleblower rather in the same vein as the Unknown Soldier? ... The portrait depict someone who say is fearful say, of losing his job or worse, but at the same time is determined. His commitment to the Truth and humanity's highest benefit pushes him to undertake supremely brave actions, including leaking valuable information to the Alternative Media. He is the personification of what Bill Ryan euphemistically calls a 'White Hat.' You never know, the painting could eventually become a valued and beloved icon of the Alternative Media.

What do you think? I hope I have not said something stupid.

    Regards from Sunny Malta

    Hi Doug,

I'll second gripreaper's suggestion of Russell Means, and would also submit the following for future consideration: John Pilger, Ken O'Keefe, John Perkins, Ethan McCord, and Max Igan.

Doug, is Paul LaViolette on your list I wonder?
In case you missed it, here’s something I posted about your portrait of Bill on the tail end of the other thread.

Quote Doug, I like the way you use two light sources to obtain contrasts of light and shade. The light from the top left (possibly natural sunlight) is so bright that the hat, instead of being a trademark appendage, really serves its purposes, protecting the face and also using the shade to reveal the features, which would otherwise be too bright to see properly. But to achieve this, the shade is only a semi-shade, with another light source (likely artificial light) to the mid-right, its beam hitting the cheek at the bottom of the ear and lighting up the chin, nose, mouth and long hair from the right.

This interplay of light and shade itself has a light side and a dark side. First, it works on the vertical plane: at the bottom, you have a fiery darkness (the dark shirt with streaks of red) contrasting at the top with what looks like, or suggests, the outdoors. And secondly, the wispy hair lighting up the darker right side somewhat resembles the smoke that Simon Parkes says you find around a djinn, some of which he says are benevolent.

All of this, combined with the almost straight-on pose, facing only fractionally to our left, seems to encapsulate Bill’s ability to sit comfortably, unblinkingly (you can’t blink for a still image!), and with an unwavering smile (you can paint a wavering one), amid these conflicting forces.

None of this is exactly what I meant by interestingly new. That is to be found in the tiny divergence from the absolute physical resemblance that makes art art (and also sometimes makes photography art). But of course, the above is precisely what you are doing, and why, when your painting strays from the identikit portrait (talking of which – you would need to check with Bill – I gather Bill Ryan senior was its inventor). Ahhhhh, yes, I don't know how I forgot that incredible portrait of Ken O'Keefe.

Just out of curiosity, how many of the (living) people depicted in this portrait series know about (have seen) their portraits?

araucaria/ thanks very much for quite a great analysis. the amazing thing about this series of work its that i am not thinking much, rather reacting. so after many years of making art, the odd thing is i still feel like i don't know what i am doing when i start. but then somehow it comes along. so many things are subtle intuitions etc. like in life, i know what i don't want to do more than what i want to do. in painting too . i look and think about why i chose this person and try to see into them in some way. some will work others not so well. thats art! like living, quite a mystery

btw/ i did not see you post this! sorry I'm not the best at the computer end of things. thanks and will look into paul L as a subject

All I can think is that I was thrown-off a bit by the specific word "whistleblower" in the title. In expanding on that word to include its larger context, the first name that comes to mid is Wade Frazier.

i added travis walton to my series. it is number 30. i never met travis but admire him and feel for his arduous path over the years. this seemed to come out in the painting regardless of me trying to steer it in another way. so i let it be what it would be. i thank and admire travis for his courage in standing up to all.

Hello Doug, another look at your Portrait archive has produced another shiver. These courageous people are so vividly drawn, it is easy to imagine they are presented in the room. And thank you for sharing your thought process, and your real curiosity and respect towards them, you ponder with your colors in the depth of their soul reflected in their eyes and bone structure, their various distinctive facial expression, and it's just as interesting to do the same to the artist himself, and go dig and see where his creativity lies.

In the name of the female gender, It could be nice to see more women wistleblowers - Deborah Tavares and Dr Judy Wood comes to mind. Maybe Rosa Parkes?
