I imagine that the modern version of an Irish wake might have, the odd time... relatives sitting on the floor beside the hunched corpse that has a drink in it's hand, taking a selfie of themselves and the corpse, both with drinks in their hands.

It might be that I'm generally not mourning in the same way as most. I see it as a form of relief, like a going away party, where one gets out of here and does not let the door hit them in the ass on the way out. To be large, full and complete again (what a relief!), not in this limited box of a body.

If this is a case of Obama having 'fun' at a funeral, then that is a problem, for some. I may not think it is a good idea in that context, as it is done out of ignorance and malice, lack of emotions. In my case, I'm talking bout knowing what is going on at the fundamental level, and I'm not seeing a problem in that context.

However, the odds are he is not aware at that level and thus it is an insult. But, considering the things I've seen done or recall being, it is so far from being important, that I cannot be bothered to let it even register.

Use it as a sign to measure his contempt or lack of emotions, sure, and parade it around as a form of illustrating to the public why they might need to be against him. In that, it might be valid. On me personally, it registers not even a blink.

I'm with Carmody. It was a memorial, a celebration of his life. Had I been there, I would really have appreciated the coffee The funeral is on Sunday.

I was bemused by completely other things on that day. The pouring rain. A good omen for many African cultures. The fake sign language interpreter and the raw emotional boos whenever the Commander in Thief: Zuma, appeared on the screens. Those who have lived through the Nkandla housing scandal, will know what I mean. The epitome of 'entitlement'. UGH!!!

Those who judge from afar, who have not been through the "struggle" will most certainly have a hard time understanding that most Africans will have no problem with the 'selfie', whether I like them (those taking the pic) or not.

Anyhoo, as with most things, divide and conquer is the order of the day/our lives. I still feel privileged to have been alive/awake during his lifetime, and having met the man personally I can attest to his larger than life persona. He is/was a gift to me and many others.

Funeral is funeral, and wake is wake. Two different things.

When some are grieving the jokes and laughter of others whose minds are on just having fun and
can be a bit irritating. But maybe no one else was sad...

Each will choose to what degree. Those who choose less due to the actions of others are lessened substantially; Just as those who feel pain in their hearts, due to their own judgements that they chose to make.

(re: this situation, I don't feel you are being judging - I tend to see things objectively and respond objectively but often fail to adjust in moments of subjectivity - I am learning this now - probably pissed off a lot of people here unintentionally )

You are falling same trap among majority.

First of all . It was a remembrance memorial not a funeral, not likely you witnessed in your culture everyday. Remembrance memorial is a joy for participants which honor the deceased person and his/her accomplished works. Participants dance , eat and drink for memory of him/her.
Totally different acts play contrary to your customs.
Do not generalize,/label an unfamiliar culture with your taught customs please.
