Talk about living off the grid. About 25 years ago, Mick Dodge shed his shoes, grew his beard, and left modern civilization (and a family) to live alone in the Pacific Northwest’s Hoh rain forest. But he’s not a total isolationist; he’s dialed into a community of mountain dwellers and agreed (although it took convincing) to be the subject of National Geographic Channel’s series “The Legend of Mick Dodge,”

Amazing. Certain persons have a calling and inclination that leads them down unique paths and they really don't care what we think about it. Something to learn here that is outside my personal lifestyle.

Incredible. I would love to meet the man. The documentary sounds very interesting.

I am amazed how people could live in the wild in freezing conditions

Oddly enough, snow is an excellent insulator. A basic fort or shelter, well insulated with snow would likely be quite cozy. You can make a small fire even and it won't melt everything like you think, as long as you have good way for the smoke and heat to escape. It's doable. I used to go camping in the winter with friends (in Canada!); you just never know about these things until you try them (but not without researching a little first - just good advice )
