Lightbulb Volcanic Eruption - Ecuador, Reventador 2014

20 Feb 14 Reventador Volcano East of Quito currently ACTIVE and erupting.

WARNING - CURRENT ERUPTION IN EFFECT

Composing current news data from various sites.

    http://correo.igepn.edu.ec/heli/heli...2014022012.gif contains the current seismic.

One can see that it is more dramatic than the outset of the eruption earlier in the month of the Tungurahua volcano south by Banos.

Reventador - background of the Volcano - current state - ERUPTING

(it is interesting that this volcano tripped into eruption as the other volcano which was erupting south of there, Tungurahua, started to quiet down - the question was where is the molten magma moving? Timing wise, the Reventador volcano activated about the same time as the Solar particle field from the previous CME and geomagnetic storm was reacting on Tungurahua)

    Structure and eruptive history

Reventador volcano consists of three successive volcanic edifices (INECEL, 1988).

This is constituted as a Basal Volcanic Complex (CVB) and is a stratovolcano that began construction about 350 000 to 400 000 years before present (BP).

This building evoked a large sector collapse, which caused an eruption and debris avalanche deposit of approx. 20 km.

This event occurred estimated about 30 000 years BP.

Its emission products include volcanic lavas and andesitic and andesitic breccias and some basic lavas and pyroclastic deposits of more differentiated composition (andesites and rhyolites).

The intermediate volcano nearby, called Paleo Reventador Volcano (VPR), is also a stratovolcano.

The growth with a pyroclastic avalanche from the caldera directed towards the East, is easily recognizable in the current topography and avalanche deposit is estimated at 8 km.

The age of this event is estimated at 20 000 years BP.

The compositional range of volcanic products of this building is restricted to basic and intermediate components, (basalts, andesites and basic andesites ).

The primary cone, called Volcano Reventador (VER), is built into the latest avalanche caldera.

As for VPR building skywards, this presents as a restricted cone of volcanic products ranging from basic andesites and andesites range.

Reventador Volcano. Photo C. Ulloa, Nov/2001

The current building (VER), is one of the most active volcanoes of the Ecuadorian arc, being especially active during the twentieth century.

    Important activity has been reported in the 20's (1922, 1926, 1929), in 1936, in 1944, in the 50's (1955, 1958, 1960) and 70 (1972, 1973-1974 and 1976).

Of these periods deserve special attention eruptions 1944 (VEI ~ 3), in which an ashfall in Quito reported for 5 hours, and the eruption of 1976 (VEI ~ 2), which was observed and described by ML Hall (Hall, 1980).

During the historical periods of activity, the level of explosivity of these eruptions has been moderate (VEI 2-3), with an eruptive dynamism that can be classified as Strombolian or Vulcan.

Volcanic phenomena generally were recognized during these eruptions with moderate ash falls in the Sierra, with pyroclastic flows and lava flows around the cone and mud and debris flows (Lahars) that fell by the rivers.

A little bit of video when there was just some small activity last November. No spectacular eruption in this video..

Speaking of Ecuadorian eruptions, here`s a pic of Tungurahua as it erupted this morning, taken as we flew past at 35 000 feet. The plume quickly reached our altitude, but by then we were past it and descending into Quito. Timing is everything!

Historic since the 17th Feb 2014 - Reventador has been becoming active ALSO as I had been pointing out with Tungurahua (further south) in Ecuador at about the same time period windows as the solar particle storm influx hitting the earth when the Sun approximated ZENITH (overhead).

Starting with the 17th, note the time local

In the Tungurahua thread I had pointed out the seismographic system was experiencing an offset skew (similar to a change in the magnetics, creating a local shift of baseline), see image, http://correo.igepn.edu.ec/heli/heli...2014022012.gif and in the above image at the Reventador seismic system over 100 miles away.. see the local time from 1400-1500 hours in the two graphics to see the similar type of offset. It is believed that the geomagnetic storm (solar induced) was creating this energetic activity..

Sorry, Bobd, I cannot report on Quito. As soon as arrived at the airport, we hopped into a taxi to get us to a bus pickup for Tena, which is where I am now. Tena is about four hours by bus, E/SE of Quito, on the Amazon basin side of the Andes.

I'll keep my eye on the sky for the next few days, though! This country is full of surprises!

    25th February 2014 - ACTIVE

Reventador in Ecuador is erupting and the pattern is tracking the solar zenith - see below

    Solar activity

X-FLARE! Long-lived sunspot AR1967 returned to the Earthside of the sun on Feb. 25th and promptly erupted, producing an X4.9-class solar flare. This is the strongest flare of the year so far and one of the strongest of the current solar cycle. It was not earth facing though.

Squarely facing the Earth, the coronal hole continued to eject solar particles earthward.

Reventador in Ecuador continues to Erupt

The event of eruption is still corresponding to the solar zenith. Today an apparent geomagnetic offset caused a skew repeatedly in the seismic recording in a few placed during the eruption periods (see below)

Note the periods after 1400 local, after 1500 local, and about 1745 local time.

Hia Seehas - nice to touch base, I watch your posts too with enjoyment very well done !

if you could keep an eye on Reventador.. What is specifically very interesting is the tracking when the sun starts to get near 10:00 local time, the volcano starts to peak, as shown in the seismic - not sure how to determine the ground shakes closer to Quito..

My friends near Tungurahua when they were at altitude, on the high plains, did have ash issues, and sulfur dioxide (choking) gas issues.. When Tungurahua calmed down, the northern volcano(s) started to get active, all the way up into Columbia.

I'm following Mitch Battros' theory that solar particle storms can trigger/evoke volcanic eruption and earthquakes, and so far as I can tell, it is tracking.

Like clockwork Reventador, Ecuador, is erupting starting about when the solar zenith starts to approach and the particle stream causes the magma to activate.

I took a brief look at Tungurahua down by Banos and there are slight increases in the spike, and a very small eruption event.

    Solar activity shows:

"CME IMPACT TRIGGERS GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A moderate G2-class geomagnetic storm is in progress following the glancing impact of a CME on Feb. 27th at 1645 UT. Sky watchers in Europe are reporting bright auroras. Ruslans Merzlakovs sends this picture from Nykøbing Mors, Denmark:"

There is a coronal hole also squarely earthfacing.

A new narrow stream of solar wind flowing from the earthfacing coronal hole should reach Earth on Feb. 28-March 1. Credit: SDO/AIA.

Expect increased volcanic and earthquake activity.

Auroral activity was seen in Denmark

Reventador was erupting a little earlier today and continued a bit into the evening a bit longer. 28 Feb 2014

As to the volcano to the south, Tungurahua, I have never seen this type of seismic activity. A type of eruption was happening without intense magma evolution.

(Showing Tungurahua here for reference comparison).

Looking at the two seismic graphics, we can see even though the over 100 miles differences in locations, the timing of the activity started about the same time.

Solar activity continued to stream particles from the coronal holes which are still earth facing.

The particle storms have triggered beautiful Auroras

Reventador continually erupting since last nite. 1 March 2014

The volcano started earlier yesterday morning, in its eruption cycle and continued with increasing seismic activity throughout the nite. This is tracking the solar particle storm activity that was predicted earlier in the week from the CME's, geomagnetic unsettled events, and coronal holes.

7pm local time Ecuador, on wards showed strong activity

Above is the daytime activity showing strong rumbling, magmatic activity, and eruption

Tungurahua to the south (Banos) only showed a brief spiking in seismic activity as the solar zenith started to approach, although there is no current eruption showing.

Earth's polar magnetic field is still glowing with auroras following the CME impact of Feb. 27th although there is some diminishment.

Coronal holes currently are diminished, and residual heating is slowly subsiding. Class "M" flare activity is 70% probable in the next two days.

Reventador volcano Ecuador is having an unusual eruption and seismic cycle - showing up today and last nite, as having had periods of long term eruption, then moderate seismic activity, then almost zero activity during the wee hours, and then intense regular "rumbling" without obvious eruption.

Is this unsettled activity, or finally is it calming down? We'll track this for a few more days to see, taking a look at the other of the two "erupting" volcanoes in Ecuador (as according to their geological institute).

As seen in the second seismic graphic above, the strange period of total calm was punctuated with a few small blasts, then the rumbling starts..

There are no direct earth-facing coronal holes present, and there is winding down of particle streams from the previous events. Prediction from NOAA is that there still is a potential for M Class flares (70% possibility).

    Auroral activity was diminished

Reventador remained unsettled, and active through out the night as seen in this seismic chart below - 3 March 14

As Solar Zenith approached, activity increased with a rapid series of seismic spikes (sharp bursts of energy release), then generally the activity of magma movement increased.

Coronal Holes are starting to form and move into Earth Facing position, which if tracking indicates what has happened previously monitoring this effect, there should be an increase in volcanic activity in the next couple days from the volcano when solar zenith approaches.

Reventador 4 March 14 - seismic equipment went offline in Ecuador last nite and didn't come back online until 0100 local time.

After coming up, the seismic activity showed nil activity.

Morning afternoon seismic graphics shows nil activity.

The sudden cessation of Reventador is unusual, considering the dome growth report of the Tungurahua volcano matches the similar pattern (cessation of activity without gradual diminishment) we see here with Reventador. This will be watched to see if this is a temporary cessation, or if a cap rupture potential is indicated. If magma solidifies, it forms a growing mass, can act like a cap, trapping gases within, eventually leading to a catestrophic large explosive event (as is seen in stratovolcanoes around the world, i.e. Krakatoa Sumatra was the explosion "heard round the world" paraphrasing a bit.)

EDIT UPDATE: - at about 1430 intense rumbling resumed, with no explosive event. Watch this closely as well as the GuaGua Pichincha to the west.

Reventador, volcano Ecuador came back to life today (as well as tungurahua) 6 March 2014

The previous night and early morning was quiet showing no indication that any activity was about to happen. This is unusual, indicating that there may have been a plug forming preventing the releases of small amounts of gas and ash. Possibly the small spikes are indicative of small fractures releasing..

About 1230 local time, sustained continual eruption after a period of quiet was occurring.
