I just discovered "The Lost Room".

“The Lost Room” is a puzzle series centered around an assortment of seemingly banal items and a motel room that ought to be just outside of Gallup, N.M., yet isn’t. While investigating a bizarre homicide, Detective Joe Miller (Krause) stumbles into an underworld of conniving collectors and spooky zealots. Spurred on by the (somewhat proforma) disappearance of his little daughter into the metaphysically unstable room, he tangles with crusaders, hoodlums, fanatics and tycoons (including Margaret Cho, resplendent in press-on nails as a dealer working out of the back room of a dry cleaner), all chasing after the objects and some of them convinced that their quests will enable them to “know the mind of God.” Part of the delight of “The Lost Room” is watching so much cosmic portent emerge from the shabby workaday noir milieu of Pittsburgh and Route 66, so I won’t give away any more of the story than that. Less cryptic than David Lynch and funkier than “Lost,” “The Lost Room” is in its own way more fun that either; once you’re hooked, though, you’ll have to content yourself with poking around on The Collectors, an ingenious fan board run by devotees of the series. "Predestination (2014)"

An entrancingly strange time-travel saga that suggests a Philip K. Dick yarn by way of Jeffrey Eugenides’ “Middlesex,” or perhaps a feature-length mash-up of “Looper” and “Cloud Atlas,” “Predestination” succeeds in teasing the brain and touching the heart even when its twists and turns keep multiplying well past the point of narrative sustainability. Playfully and portentously examining themes of destiny, mutability and identity through the story of two strangers whose lives turn out to be intricately linked, sibling filmmakers Peter and Michael Spierig offer a skillful and atmospheric adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein’s 1960 short story ” — All You Zombies — ,” and if it’s better in the intimate early stages than in the more grandiose later passages, all in all it’s the sort of boldly illogical head trip that gives preposterousness a good name. Graced by an extraordinary breakout performance from Aussie newcomer Sarah Snook, “Predestination” is likely fated for a minor arthouse reception at best, but there will be plenty of cultists willing to indulge its heady and rarefied approach.variety.com

Terrible, dark, compelling and original. "Snowpiercer "(2014)

A stark and grimy look at a terrible future, Bong Joon-ho’s film (his first in English), is unrelentingly bleak until, well, it relents. When it does, and its really only for a brief moment, the film achieves a kind of grace, a transcendence of all the dark obliteration preceding it, in a way we haven’t seen since Children of Men, Alfonso Cuaron’s 2006 masterpiece about another dystopia. "The Invention of lying"(2009)

In its amiable, quiet, PG-13 way, "The Invention of Lying" is a remarkably radical comedy. It opens with a series of funny, relentlessly logical episodes in a world where everyone always tells the truth, and then slips in the implication that religion is possible only in a world that has the ability to lie. Then it wraps all of this into a sweet love story.

"Dark City" (1998) Director's Cut

Dark City is a film that will only grow with time, for not only is it a bottleneck work of art, but it’s a transcendent film. Like 2001: A Space Odyssey, it transcends the limits of sci fi. Similarly, claims that the film is Gothic, noir, Expressionist, etc. are similarly shortsighted, as well are those which liken the film’s narrative to Kafka or Orwell. The clear progenitor of this film is in fact Rod Serling, creator of the television show The Twilight Zone. But the film makes use of imagery from sources few have ever noticed, from campy predecessors in science fiction — the scene of Murdoch on The Strangers’ wheel is highly derivative of the flying death scenes in Logan’s Run, and the early scenes of The Strangers causing the city to sleep for a tuning, with cars in the middle of traffic-jammed roads, is a steal straight from the opening scenes of Federico Fellini’s 8½. This diversity, however, just proves a point I’ve long made, that greatness is a difference of kind not merely degree.

2006 Magic Movies showdown. Both so watchable.....

The Prestige

Christopher Nolan was coming off the success of “Batman Begins” and taking most of that films cast and crew to make a movie about warring magicians. Great performances, dialogue and direction make this movie hard to beat in this edition of Cinematic Showdown. Don’t fret if you don’t agree. We have yet to consider the factors.

The Illusionist

Neil Burger (Limitless, Divergent) directed this movie about an Austrian illusionist by the name Eisenheim who tries to capture the love of a woman who is in a different social class. Convincing performances (especially between Paul Giamatti and Edward Norton), neat editing, and an excellent musical score (provided by genius composer, Philip Glass).

And finally "Coraline" (2009) terrifying.....

Coraline's PG rating should have come with an asterisk, specifying that it's up to each individual parent (or her psychoanalyst) to gauge whether her child is old enough to deal with the appallingly scary premise of a mother replaced by a fiendish, insatiable double bent on stealing her child's eyes. I'm 42, and I'm not sure I can handle that yet. Is there such a thing as PG-43?
