Austin, Texas (CNN) -- From his sanctuary in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, with roughly a dozen police officers outside, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said Saturday that everyone in the world will be just as effectively monitored soon -- at least digitally.
"The ability to surveil everyone on the planet is almost there and, arguably, will be there in the next couple of years," said Assange, speaking via Skype to a large audience at the South by Southwest Interactive festival here.

Assange rocketed to international fame, and infamy, in 2010 after Wikileaks began helping publish secret government documents online.

Ecuador granted Assange asylum in June 2012 and he fled to the embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over allegations that he raped one woman and sexually molested another.

He calls those charges false and politically motivated, but has said he fears Sweden will transfer him to the United States, where he could face the death penalty for the work of WikiLeaks if he were charged and convicted of a crime.

On Saturday, he called life in the embassy "like a prison," adding that actual inmates "arguably" have it worse.

Saturday's talk was billed as a question-and-answer session, but because of technological glitches it ended up being mostly an hourlong speech by Assange, punctuated occasionally with questions from Twitter.

The one-sided conversation seemed to turn off some members of the 2,000 people in the audience, many of whom streamed out before Assange was finished speaking.

With little to guide him other than his own thoughts (moderator Benjamin Palmer's audio connection appeared to go down after about 15 minutes), Assange was largely left to expound upon his views that world powers like the United States and England have overstepped their bounds in terms of online surveillance.

He said the U.S. National Security Agency has become a "rogue agency" with too much power, even suggesting that President Barack Obama would be toppled politically if he attempted to disband the agency.

"They would come up with all of this dirt (on Obama)," he said. "Congress may impeach him ... a criminal act would come to light."

Assange described activist groups like WikiLeaks as freedom fighters in an age when governments have occupied what should be their citizens' private online space.

"Now that the Internet has merged with human society, the laws of human society should apply to the Internet," he said.

He said that because governments keep so much information secret, citizens don't have a complete picture of what is happening.

"We're all actually living in a world that we don't understand," he said. Assange called it a "fictitious representation of the world," an illusion in which "the true nature of government power structures is obscured.

"We're walking around constantly in this fog."

He also had harsh word for private Internet titans such as Facebook and Google, who have come under scrutiny in recent years for collecting data about their users.

"What is going on is an unprecedented theft of wealth from the majority of the population by those who already have a lot of power," said Assange when asked a question about Facebook and privacy.

"They're doing that in part by stealing information from all of us. Knowledge is power, and so they're accumulating a lot of power."

He had similar complaints about Google, noting that there are now 1 billion Android devices in the world. "That's a big problem, that a single group is able to capture that much information (about people). You are all the product."

Assange's talk was one of several high-profile events at this tech-themed conference dedicated to online privacy and transparency. On Monday, NSA leaker Edward Snowden is scheduled to address an SXSW crowd via a live feed from his exile in Russia.

It matters - a lot.

Control of masses, and of individuals, depends on intelligence.

Any one of us who pisses off the bastards in power too much can be eliminated, marginalized or intimidated ... it would be nearly impossible for most of us to disappear "beneath their radar", at least not without a nearly complete abandonment of our current life and people we associate with. With the world-wide data networks, camera surveillance, satellite surveillance, tracking of all financial transactions, phone calls, passing through intersections viewed by camera, email, internet activity, ... and on and on ... hiding is no longer a practical option for most of us.

And that's on the individual level for us normal peons.

Any individual with any non-trivial power (key executive in some corporation, news reporter, professor, politician, banker, ...) can be forced to comply ... or else.

Any alternative web media personality with his or her head too far above the parapet can be forced to comply, or have their reputation destroyed ... or else.

Then one gets to the more interesting matters.

Entire populations can be, and are, controlled. World leaders, supreme court justices (why did Justice Roberts switch his key vote on the constitutionality of Obamacare?), major corporate CEO's, ... comply ... or else. Major financial markets (forex, stock, libor, ...) are controlled. Science, medicine, technology, education, research, economies, ... are controlled.

Superior intelligence is key to all this.

I would say that the worrying and the reaction to what is going on is part of the process of getting clear of the current issues, and then.... this rosy future part can take care of it's self, in that context.

@Paul, what about the rest of what I said? That sentence that you took out of context, was just a smidgen of where the rest of that paragraph was going. The sentence you were quoting on, I was merely stating that I am not going to live in fear for what they do, or do not do, and worry about it too much. There are many whitehat operatives within the resistance movement that are going to turn this surveillance crap inside out in due time. Where by all means necessary these things that have been controlled by TPTB will cease all together, and they will then be waiving the white flag telling us to "please stop", while we say "but it's a little too late for that cry wolf nonsense, be gone..."

It is very interesting that you brought this up Tesla. I decided to watch Hunger Games because many people
kept mentioning it. I realized it had become some sort of cultural reference point and I decided it would be a
good idea for me to understand what people were using as a reference. In the newest version of the Hunger
Games series (II I think), a revolution starts after the heroine has fought her own battle in full view of mass
conscious awareness of the rest of the population.

I was quite surprised to feel in me a tremendous surge of hope and freedom when I found out that the revolution
had FINALLY started. My emotions were so strong that I found myself in tears of ... joy?

I thought (and still do think) that this strong emotional reaction within me was odd. I am not sure if the film
echoes the human past... is a prediction of the future.... or is designed to try to effect the mass
consciousness so that people will try a violence based revolt to free themselves.

I wonder if TPTB would love a violence based revolt because it would leave yet one more scar of trauma
within the human psyche and therefore would weaken the human population as they attempt to deal
with the emotional aftermath of a war.

As the granddaughter of Ukrainians that fled the ethnic cleansing of over 15,000,000 of their own countrymen
I understand just how extremely difficult the cleansing of these trauma energies left from a war can be. In
a study done of Auschwitz prisoners it has been found that the CHILDREN of the prisoners are able to have
normal lives and function well in society, while the GRANDCHILDREN of these prisoners are a mess. The grandchildren
experience numerous traumas, are chronically depressed, and suffer many debilitating illnesses along with having
a shorter than average lifespan. (I'm sorry that I cannot reference the particular studies done here, I learnt of them
while taking a 3 year graduate course in trauma recovery through Somatic Experiencing. This is a well regarded

Unresolved trauma energies play a huge role in the human condition. TPTB are masters at making sure we suffer them

2 killed when intoxicated driver plows car into crowd at SXSW, police say

Austin, Texas (CNN) -- An intoxicated driver fleeing police plowed his car into a crowd at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, early Thursday, killing two people, authorities said.
The driver, who now faces two counts of capital murder, Texas' highest offense, hit pedestrians, a moped, a taxi, a bicycle and a van, said Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo. Authorities will not release the driver's identity until he is formally charged.
The suspect also faces 23 counts of aggravated assault by vehicle, Acevedo said.
Police have not identified the dead, but they were a Dutch man on a bicycle and a local woman on a moped, Acevedo said, correcting his earlier statement that the victims had been on a motorcycle.
MassiveMusic, a music agency with offices around the world, posted a statement on its website and Facebook page identifying the company's Amsterdam-based creative director, Steven Craenmehr, as a person killed Thursday in Austin.
"During the 8 years that Steven worked for MassiveMusic, we got to know him as an unstoppable force, full of life, love and laughter," the Facebook post said. "This is an irreplaceable loss for the MassiveMusic family, and we are grateful for the years we spent with him. Our thoughts are with Steven's family and friends."
Twenty-three others were hospitalized, some with multiple internal injuries. Most of the victims were in their 20s, said Dr. Christopher Ziebell, medical director at the University Medical Center Brackenridge emergency department.
Police: SXSW crash was 'intentional act' Witness: 'The car barely missed me'
"A few of the cases are quite severe," Ziebell said during a news conference, adding that he has concerns about the two most critical patients.
As of late Thursday morning, 15 of the 23 people hospitalized had been released, according to James Shamard, chief of staff for Austin-Travis County EMS. Two patients remain in "very critical" condition, three are in serious condition and receiving treatment, while three others remain hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, he said.
Ziebell said it was fortunate the incident occurred so close to the hospital, and he applauded the Travis County paramedics, who had just undergone training for a similar scenario, for their response.
The incident began when an officer noticed a man driving the wrong direction on a one-way street shortly after midnight.
A patrol officer attempted to stop the car near a crowded gas station, Acevedo said. The driver, the chief said, acted as if he was pulling over into the gas station, but he continued through the parking lot and exited, accelerating down the street.
The officer attempting to pull him over couldn't follow him because the parking lot was so crowded, so he had to back out, Acevedo said. Another officer working barricade control had to jump out of the driver's way as he accelerated for about two blocks, striking pedestrians and vehicles, the chief said.
A foot chase ensued, and an officer eventually caught the driver and used his Taser to subdue him, Acevedo said.
"It looked like something out of a movie," said Russ Barone, who was at the festival. "A few people lying on the street ... with their friends around them trying to get them up, trying to get them back to life. Hopefully, they are."
He said the scene was grisly, with people bleeding in the streets.
"I've never seen nothing like it. I felt like I was at a war or something," Barone said. "I was down here for the music ... we were having the best time ever. And then it turned into the worst thing I've ever seen."
Pablo Vazquez was also at the event when the suspect drove past him.
"The car barely missed me ... I was less than a foot away," Vazquez told CNN's New Day. "I saw some folks die."
It kept moving forward, swerving to hit victims and even ramming into a taxi at one point, he said.
Photos and video posted to social media showed people sprawled on a street for about a block with first responders kneeling over them. In one instance, they're seen performing CPR.
Witnesses on a YouTube video said the car sped through the crowd, tossing some victims into the air and knocking others down.
Acevedo urged those posting videos on social media to turn them over to authorities instead.
South by Southwest is an annual event that features film, interactive and music festivals, and draws crowds to the Texas capital every year.
In a statement on its website, SXSW commended the first responders and city agencies that assisted them and said its thoughts and prayer were with the victims and those affected.
"We will be making schedule and venue changes for programming in the surrounding area of last night's events. All other programming will continue as previously scheduled." the statement said.
CNN first learned of the incident via posts on Twitter.
