Default U.S. intelligence chief bars unauthorized contacts with reporters on all intel-related matters

Interesting development in the NSA's effort to keep US citizens in the dark...

    http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2014/04/2...uthorized.html

Quote Employees of U.S. intelligence agencies have been barred from discussing any intelligence-related matter - even if it isn’t classified - with journalists, under a new directive issued by Director of National Security James Clapper.

Intelligence agency employees who violate the policy could suffer career-ending losses of their security clearances or out-right termination, and those who disclose classified information could face criminal prosecution, according to the directive signed by Clapper on March 20.
The most interesting point IMO is found in bold below.

Quote “The directive is limited to contact with the media about intelligence related-information, including intelligence sources, methods, activities and judgments,” says the order, which doesn’t distinguish between classified and unclassified matters.

It also includes a sweeping definition of who is a journalist, which it asserts is “any person . . . engaged in the collection, production, or dissemination to the public of information in any form related to topics of national security.”

The order represents the latest move by the Obama administration to stifle leaks. It bolsters another administration initiative, called the Insider Threat Program, which requires federal employees to report co-workers who show any of a broad variety of “high risk” behaviors that could indicate that they could be sources of unauthorized releases of classified or unclassified material.

President Barack Obama launched the Insider Threat Program in October 2011 after Army Pfc. Chelsea Manning downloaded hundreds of thousands of documents from a classified computer network and sent them to WikiLeaks, the anti-government secrecy group.

The administration redoubled its crackdown after the leaks to news media of classified information on the National Security Agency’s top-secret communications data collection operations by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

Investigative journalism is almost indistinguishable from what the spy agencies do --

except journalists are expected to tell the truth and be loyal to the people they inform.

We (journalists) are the ENEMY of those who would deceive the public.

This is a declaration of war against the public mind -- **** the NSA.

Yep. I found it interesting the way they blur the lines of "journalism" by including basically anyone who reads or writes. So... the public.

Speak the truth. speak it loud, speak it often. This is protected by the 1st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It shall not be infringed!

The founding fathers knew that this was in the interest of national security as they listed this the first law of the land after the Declaration of Independence. (Just another american history lesson.)

Silly me I thought only the legislature could pass laws. This is like the CEO of McDonalds signing a directive that if an employee gets an order wrong they could be fired and prosecuted for fraud. Of course I'm torn because if you're dumb enough to work for the devil you are probably deserving of being treated like hell.

This policy [IC Directive 119] is being issued together with IC Directive 120 to ensure that members of the Intelligence Community are made aware of the protections provided them as whistleblowers who make protected disclosures.

This is in response to the Snowden affair but has wide ranging implications including wrong doing within the intelligence community, restricting freedom of the flow of information, and a massive restriction of the transmission of information. It is more of a dictatorship, after all Homeland Security reminds me of Fatherland, and Motherland and we all know whom provided those terms.

So, is it too big to fix?

    How do we define "fix"?

    What is the alternative?

I will say this will be interpreted in many different ways by the intelligence community according to their own instructions and agenda no doubt to keep their security and secrets intact even further. It is far more restrictive now that in the past.

I think maybe they should start calling it "lack of intelligence" since agents are no longer allowed to practice judgment or conscience.

    lol
