It is believed that the virus originated in bats, others are saying that the virus came from camels, however there are no solid evidence to back up those claims.
Some blame the new respiratory viruses on deforestation. The following quote was taken from Wikipedia in Arabic then translated to English "in AD 1990 in both Australia and Malaysia deforestation led to the migration of bats infected with Hendra and Nepha viruses to areas to population centers and the transmission of the virus to animals and then to humans". Now this could be true, but I am inclined to believe that the new viruses are being created in labs for secret military programs. From the way I see it, the perpetrators are looking for a way to kill many people, but have not found a perfect way to do so yet.
When I caught this MERS infection in Abu Dhabi, what was present was a very strong dust storm, and I was in the desert but briefly. There were no camels present, but that didn't mean that their droppings weren't blowing in the wind.

As of Friday, 262 people in 12 countries were confirmed to have MERS, and 93 died. More than 100 other patients have a confirmed case but are not included in the World Health Organization tally, said Dr. Anne Schuchat, Assistant Surgeon General, United States Public Health Service and Director, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.

For questions about MERS, call the Indiana State Department of Health hotline at 1-877-826-0011, which is being answered daily, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A voicemail system is available for callers to leave a message during off hours.

    CDC has issued this statement:

The CDC recommends the following tips to prevent the spread of disease:

    • Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, and help young children do the same. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

    • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze then throw the tissue in the trash.

    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

    • Avoid close contact, such as kissing, sharing cups, or sharing eating utensils, with sick people.

    • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs.

The case reported in Indiana, USA UPDATE - 4 May 14

MUNSTER | A patient hospitalized at Community Hospital with the first U.S. case of a deadly virus from the Middle East remains in good condition and is improving daily, according to a statement released Sunday morning by the Indiana State Department of Health.

No new cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) have been reported in the state.

“We are very pleased the patient is improving and no other cases have been identified at this time,” said State Health Commissioner William VanNess II.

“The individual has received excellent care while at Community Hospital in Munster. The swift diagnosis and precautionary measures taken have undoubtedly greatly helped reduce the risk of this potentially serious virus spreading.”

The Department of Health is working with the hospital, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and others to monitor the situation and prevent the virus' spread. Representatives from the CDC arrived in Indianapolis Saturday to assist and arrived at the hospital Sunday morning.

Its climbing - the Saudi Arabian total is now up to 414 confirmed cases 6 May 2014

    ref: http://time.com/89263/saudi-arabia-r...e-mers-deaths/

There’s worry over how much the disease could spread in July when millions of people are expected to visit on Saudi Arabia for Ramadan.

In October, millions of Muslims will also gather in the city of Mecca for the Hajj, an annual Islamic pilgrimage. Health officials are worried about transmission.

good grief, due to their religious practices, a virus like this in the middle east is like a nuke to them.

it accomplishes the same thing. i feel bad for them.

compared to US they have a lot more "contact", "shoulder rubbing", crowds, black markets, etc.
more chances to catch the virus.

Americans, we will probably catch it at the Doctor or Grocery/pharmacy. or church.
    movies. concerts. etc.

    this could shut everything down.

"As Riyadh declared four new deaths from the MERS coronavirus and 18 new infections on Thursday, a Saudi cleric has claimed that he has found a cure for the deadly virus, prompting ridicule on social media.

Abdullah al-Amrani told al-Hayat newspaper in an interview published Tuesday that he had “succeeded” in finding an herbal cure derived from Islamic medicinal practices.

“I am confident of its effectiveness and [its] ability to cure stubborn diseases and viruses including MERS,” Amrani said, adding that he tried his medicine one two patients - one with AIDS and the other with Leukemia - and both were relieved of their ailments.

The claim sparked ridicule on Twitter with one user joking that it's part of the religious clergy’s business expansion to health sector.

"You have expanded your business from trading on religion to health and medicine, but please don’t say you have a cure of MERS or AIDS," the Twitter user said.

"God willing, the Virus will disappear soon thanks to the discovery of the preacher from Tabuk," another Twitter user remarked.

The preacher is not the only cleric to issue a statement on the virus that has so far killed 121 people in Saudi Arabia.

Last week, a cleric derided people for wearing protective face masks, saying the measure won’t help.

“I went to the airport yesterday and I saw a big number of people who were wearing masks, I go to the market and I see people wearing them as well,” Mohammad al-Arifit said during his Friday prayer sermon.

“The disease doesn’t even spread in the air anyways. If there was an infected person who was standing in front of you and [they] sneezed or coughed, and if he was close enough, you will get infected,” he said.

“But if you are [standing] far way, the disease is heavy, it falls on the ground. Viruses do not fly and get inside your nose.”

But Arifi added: “Some people wearing the masks [ma] even get infected because of it.”

This has some irked observers, who say that advice should only be given by medical professionals.

A writer for the London-based al-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper told Al Arabiya News Channel that discussing MERS and its treatment should only be done with the relevant professionals.

Fahad al-Shagrani said Saudi Arabia’s council of senior scholars are the exclusive issuers of religious edicts, and only they should have the right to issue edicts concerning the MERS virus and preventative measures.

Shagrani emphasized that the council has specialized committees to issue edicts when it comes to such situations.

“What is happening is that some people are talking about [it] when they shouldn’t be talking,” he said.

The writer said that clerics who make statements on the MERS virus independently of Saudi authorities will only “confuse society, and belittle the medical sciences.”" link

Quote “What is happening is that some people are talking about [it] when they shouldn’t be talking,” he said.
That is really the point isn't it Rocky, with religious sponsored mind-washing. It could be any mind-washing, such as a "study done" by some hired scientist, told to create data that says it's not spreading, has not mutated.. cannot be transferred from human to human by sneezing..

I suppose what they don't believe is that folks who have come down with that bug would be talking about it, trying to explain what the "system" is like, including the very important point about when the bug DID hit the US, in February 2013, and a person died of it, another almost died, that the authorities apparently WANTED a strain which would spread person to person, and see how long it takes for a person infected, to incubate the disease, to present, to remain infective, and how deadly is the new mutated strain..

What do they call people who use that type of medicine? The Island of Doctor Moreau is an 1896 science fiction novel by H. G. Wells, who called it "an exercise in youthful blasphemy". Seems to me that mindset is practiced by certain folks who couldn't care in the least about helping humanity, instead creating more suffering, damage and control..

Anyway, today, Lebanon reports its first published official MERS case. http://revolutionradio.org/?p=73385

I had pointed out earlier in the thread, the people I came in contact with, that I believe were infected also, were recently traveling from Lebanon, and the other just recently had been to Yemen (also considered Al Qaeda haven). I had reported that back in February, and that was also ignored. I reported something really didn't "feel right" with what was going on in Abu Dhabi, and that was ignored also.. How strange?

"Editor’s note: This story was revised on May 9 to add Yemen to the list of countries that have had MERS cases.

Lebanon joined the growing list of countries affected by MERS-CoV (Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus) with a report of its first case today, while the onslaught of cases in Saudi Arabia continued with 14 more, along with 5 deaths.

Lebanese Health Minister Wael Abu Faour gave few details in announcing the country’s first case, saying only that it involved a man who improved with treatment in a hospital and has already been released, according to a report in the Daily Star, a Lebanese newspaper.

Another Lebanese news service, Naharnet, said health ministry officials reported that the patient is a Lebanese national who recently returned from visiting a Persian Gulf country."

    HISTORICAL

Way back last year, the Jerusalem Post reported that the nCov virus (now called MERS, mideast respiratory syndrome) that this virus will mutate. 02/19/2013 08:26a

Will be easily spread? Crystal ball there right?

"LONDON - A new virus that emerged in the Middle East last year and has killed five people is well adapted to infecting humans but could potentially be treated with drugs that boost the immune system, scientists said on Tuesday.

The virus, called novel coronavirus or NCoV, is from the same family as the common cold and as SARS, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. There have been 12 confirmed cases worldwide - including in Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Britain - and five patients have died.

In one of the first published studies about NCoV, which was unknown in humans until it was identified in September 2012, researchers said it could penetrate the lining of passageways in the lungs and evade the immune system as easily as a cold virus can.

This shows it "grows very efficiently" in human cells and suggests it is well-equipped for infecting humans, said Volker Thiel of the Institute of Immunobiology at Kantonal Hospital in Switzerland, who led the study. "

Cohen's keynote address at the Conference on Terrorism, Weapons of Mass Destruction, and U.S. Strategy at the Georgia Center, Mahler Auditorium, University of Georgia, Athens, Ga. The event is part of the Sam Nunn Policy Forum being hosted by the University of Georgia. Secretary Cohen is joined by Sen. Sam Nunn and Sen. Richard G. Lugar.

Quote Q: Let me ask you specifically about last week's scare here in Washington, and what we might have learned from how prepared we are to deal with that (inaudible), at B'nai Brith.
A: Well, it points out the nature of the threat. It turned out to be a false threat under the circumstances. But as we've learned in the intelligence community, we had something called -- and we have James Woolsey here to perhaps even address this question about phantom moles. The mere fear that there is a mole within an agency can set off a chain reaction and a hunt for that particular mole which can paralyze the agency for weeks and months and years even, in a search.

The same thing is true about just the false scare of a threat of using some kind of a chemical weapon or a biological one.

There are some reports, for example, that some countries have been trying to construct something like an Ebola Virus, and that would be a very dangerous phenomenon, to say the least.

Alvin Toeffler has written about this in terms of some scientists in their laboratories trying to devise certain types of pathogens that would be ethnic specific so that they could just eliminate certain ethnic groups and races; and others are designing some sort of engineering, some sort of insects that can destroy specific crops.

Others are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves.

So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations.

It's real, and that's the reason why we have to intensify our efforts, and that's why this is so important.
Then United States Senator Nunn said to then Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen:
    Thank you very much.

    MERS now in JORDAN

7 MAY 2014 - On 3 and 6 May 2014, the IHR National Focal Point of Jordan notified WHO of two additional laboratory-confirmed cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) infections.

The following details were provided to WHO on 3 May 2014 by the IHR National Focal Point for Jordan:

A 28 year-old male health-care worker complained of a headache and sore throat on 22 April 2014. On 26 April 2014, chest X-rays showed normal findings and testing performed on 27 April 2014 were negative for MERS-CoV. On 30 April 2014, he developed a cough and fever and was admitted to hospital in Zarka on the same day. On 2 May 2014, a chest X-ray showed pneumonia and tested positive for MERS-CoV. The patient is currently in a stable condition.

This is how the MERS-nCoV can hide at first, confusing first responders and health care workers. FIRST negative (and they don't do any more tests, but the patient goes downhill, and the facility does STUPID things trying to dehydrate the person to stop the flooding (LASIX for instance) instead of a proper drying agent.

He is reported to have had close contact with a previously reported case who was also hospitalized in Zarka.

The following details were provided to WHO on 6 May 2014 by the IHR National Focal Point for Jordan:

A 56 year-old Jordanian male resident of Zarka and respiratory therapist at a private clinic was admitted to hospital on 28 April 2014 with pneumonia. On 3 May 2014, he developed acute respiratory distress syndrome and was transferred to the intensive-care unit. Throat swab specimens were collected on 4 May 2014 and tested positive for MERS-CoV on 5 May 2014. The patient died on 5 May 2014.

He did not have a recent travel history or exposure to a known laboratory-confirmed case of MERS-CoV.

That is how fast it can kill.

    MERS-nCoV now in YEMEN

    7 MAY 2014 UPDATE -

On 15 April 2014, the IHR National Focal Point of Yemen notified WHO of a laboratory confirmed case of MERS-CoV in a 44 year-old male residing in Shibam.

The patient was diagnosed as having hepatitis B and is reported to have developed symptoms on 17 March 2014, including fever, productive cough, chills, headache, muscle aches, and shortness of breath. He was admitted to hospital on 22 March 2014 in Hadramoot Governorate, and subsequently transferred on 29 March 2014 to an intensive-care unit of a private hospital in Sanaa. He was intubated, developed renal failure, and died on 31 March 2014.

Prior to the patient's decline and subsequent death, on 31 March 2014 oropharyngeal specimens were collected from the patient and tested positive on 2 April 2014.

*** On 24 April 2014, the specimens were sent to the United States’ Naval Medical Research Unit-3 (NAMRU-3) for external confirmation and tested positive on 5 May 2014. Oropharyngeal specimens collected from 12 contacts of the patient tested negative at NAMRU-3. (note the development time to present, 11 days typical up to 21 days, potentially again missing the infective period.)

The patient was an aircraft maintenance engineer with contact among passengers at the airport where he was working. He had no history of travel during the last month of his illness and no known contact with a confirmed case. He is reported to have visited a camel farm on a weekly basis and drank fresh raw camel milk.

World Health Organization saying serious - meeting to discuss world outbreaks coming this Tuesday.

    SAUDI EXPOSURE, DEATHS - update

In its most recent tally, issued on Saturday, the Saudi health ministry said six people died from the disease in the past 24 hours.

Three women, aged 22, 26 and 35, died in the capital, Riyadh, a 68-year-old woman and a 78-year-old man in the western city of Medina, and a man in his 70s in the commercial capital, Jeddah.
The ministry on Friday also said three men aged 94, 51 and 42, died from MERS in the Jeddah region.

It added that a 74-year-old man died in the city of Taef, while a woman, 71, and two men, aged 81 and 25, died in the capital.

The announcement of the latest fatalities came the day after the WHO said it would hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss the spread of the virus.

The UN health agency’s emergency committee has already met four times to talk about the coronavirus since it surfaced in 2012.

“The increase in the number of cases in different countries raises a number of questions,” said Tarik Jasarevic, a WHO spokesman.

Saudi has finally said, use caution around camels.

"Saudi Arabia said people handling camels should wear masks and gloves to prevent spreading Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), issuing such a warning for the first time as cases in the kingdom of the potentially fatal virus neared 500.

"Health experts say camels are the most likely animal reservoir for the disease, which the Saudi health ministry reported late on Saturday that seven more people had caught."

"In a statement on Sunday, the Agriculture Ministry advised people not to come into contact with camels unless necessary and to wash hands before and after if they did, as well as wearing face masks, state news agency SPA said on Sunday.

"It is advisable to wear protective gloves, especially when dealing with births or sick or dead (camels)," it said, according to SPA.

"It also advised only eating cooked camel meat and to boil camel milk before consuming it. The statement urged people to report symptoms of MERS in camels immediately.

"The World Health Organisation (WHO) has advised people at most risk of severe disease to avoid contact with camels.

"Saudi Arabia's Health Ministry had avoided linking MERS with camels until a news conference late last month.

"However, the Agriculture Ministry statement was the first official notification to those working with the animals."

    Eurosurveillance, Volume 19, Issue 16, 24 April 2014

It appears it WAS known about, and silenced, not made public, the reservoir from Camels.

A countrywide survey in Oman revealed Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) nucleic acid in five of 76 dromedary camels.

Camel-derived MERS-CoV sequences (3,754 nucleotides assembled from partial sequences of the open reading frame (ORF)1a, spike, and ORF4b genes) from Oman and Qatar were slightly different from each other, but closely related to human MERS-CoV sequences from the same geographical areas, suggesting local zoonotic transmission.

High viral loads in nasal and conjunctival swabs suggest possible transmission by the respiratory route.

    Background

In June 2012 a novel betacoronavirus, subsequently named Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), was isolated from a patient with fever and respiratory symptoms who had been admitted to a hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

As of 22 April 2014, the number of reported laboratory-confirmed cases of MERS-CoV worldwide amounts to 333, with 107 deaths.

To date, only fifteen cases, including ten in Europe, have been reported outside of the Middle East and the vast majority of cases were reported from Saudi Arabia.

Thus, it seems that the virus may originate from the Arabian Peninsula. Family, healthcare associated and community case clusters of MERS-CoV infections have been reported.

Besides limited human-to-human transmission, however, epidemiological data point towards an animal reservoir of MERS-CoV. First evidence of such a reservoir host was provided when all 50 investigated sera of dromedary camels (Camelus dromedaries) from Oman exhibited high-titre neutralising antibodies against MERS-CoV.

This observation has meanwhile been confirmed by several studies from other countries on the Arabian Peninsula and beyond.

Other important farm animals on the Arabian Peninsula such as cattle, goats, sheep and chickens were also investigated but were found negative.

Although different species of bats carry a variety of coronaviruses and have been suggested as the most likely primary animal reservoir for MERS-CoV, so far only a short (190 nucleotides (nt)) sequence in a conserved region of the MERS-CoV genome was amplified from a faecal pellet of a bat (Taphozous perforates) in Saudi Arabia.

The present study was initiated in order to identify the virus in camels and to compare it genetically with human-derived MERS-CoV.

    Sample collection

In December 2013, nasal and conjunctival swabs were taken from 76 dromedary camels of different age, breed and sex from all over Oman.

All swabs were taken in duplicates, one stored in virus isolation medium and the other in the virus-inactivating buffer DNA/RNA Shield (Zymo Research, Irvine, USA).

The former samples were frozen at -80°C at the Veterinary Research Center of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Oman, for later use, while the latter samples were shipped to the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna for analysis. DNA/RNA Shield effectively lyses cells and inactivates nucleases and infectious agents.

In addition it ensures nucleic acid stability during sample storage and transport at ambient temperatures.

Nucleic acid extraction and polymerase chain reactions

RNA was extracted employing a Quick-RNA MiniPrep Kit (Zymo Research, Irvine, USA), following the manufacturer’s instructions.

For screening, two published MERS-CoV reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) assays were performed, one in the open reading frame (ORF)1a gene region and the other in the ORF1b gene region, and both were optimised for SuperScript III Platinium One-Step RT-qPCR System (Invitrogen/LifeTechnologies, CA, USA).

For confirmation, the positive samples were retested by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reactions (RT-PCRs) in the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp)- and nucleocapsid (N) gene regions as well as in the spike gene region and by five other RT-PCRs designed for subsequent phylogenetic analysis. The MERS-CoV genome organisation and the location of the five RT-PCR amplicons used to generate a concatenated sequence for phylogenetic analysis.

    Discussion

The results of our study and similar studies from Qatar and Saudi Arabia show a close genetic relationship between camel-derived and human-derived MERS-CoV from the same geographical areas, suggesting local zoonotic transmission. A proof of cross-species transmission of MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans was reported in a publication on human infection with MERS-CoV after exposure to infected camels in Saudi Arabia recently. (ref: Memish ZA, Cotten M, Meyer B, Watson SJ, Alsahafi AJ, Al Rabeeah AA, et al. Human infection with MERS coronavirus after exposure to infected camels, Saudi Arabia, 2013. This was known about in 2013 this link, and suppressed. This caused the deaths of many people, hardships, this is unconscionable. I lost my mother because of this suppression. I have suffered a large loss as a result of this, not to mention a year of personal suffering from the effects slowly recovering. The perpetrators of this atrocity should be brought to justice.

MERS in the US, 2nd case confirmed in Florida, Orlando

ref - http://www.wftv.com/news/news/local/...ted-fla/nftYx/ Florida TV station reporting.

"ORLANDO, Fla. — Health officials have confirmed the second U.S. case of a mysterious virus that has sickened hundreds in the Middle East is in Orlando.

Officials with Florida Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the case at a press conference Monday afternoon.

The virus is MERS, or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome. It is a respiratory illness that begins with flu-like fever and cough but can lead to shortness of breath, pneumonia and death. A third of those who develop symptoms die from it.

    That's a 33% mortality rate.

Most cases have been in Saudi Arabia or the Middle East. But earlier this month a first U.S. case was diagnosed in a man who traveled from Saudi Arabia to Indiana.

According to the CDC, the most recent case involves patient who is a healthcare worker who works and resides in Saudi Arabia. The person first traveled to BOSTON, then to FLORIDA.

They believe the patient was helping to treat MERS patients there.

Officials said the patient was admitted to the hospital on May 8 and is doing well.

The patient flew from Saudi Arabia to Orlando, with several stops in between, according to officials who said they are working to identify people who may have been on the flights with the patient.

Officials said the risk to the general public is "very low." (this is repeated constantly trying to disarm the seriousness of this disease)
Officials have not said which hospital is treating the patient."

    UPDATE:

The cities that this person flew through, transferred, are:
    • Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
    • London, England
    • Boston, Massachusetts, USA
    • Atlanta, Georgia, USA
    • Orlando, Florida, USA

2 more cases possible in Orlando (that would be 4 cases now in the US) - epidemic from the mideast possibly spreading?

They keep saying it doesn't spread easy, all the talking head are smiling, nodding, it doesn't spread easily (repeat after me, it doesn't spread, watch my eyes closely...), hmmmm

It is unknown just WHAT the two health care workers have who have been taking care of the traveler who returned from Saudi Arabia, thru London, Boston, and Atlanta a few days ago.

The patient had fell ill on the flight from London, so it is very likely that the virus was able to present.

That the caregivers have gotten ill "with symptoms" but it is "unknown with what", it is presenting as previously found with hospitals in Jeddah.

(i know the reactions, symptoms and death outcome if the elderly catch this, personally, it is not a kind or gentle way to die)

The case that is in Indiana, to give people an idea of the geographic location, the town is Munster, Indiana,, which is not far from the suburbs of Chicago. So, not optimal for epidemic control.

WHO meets, says very concerned about this virus, its mutation ability, ability to potentially develop into more lethal, and easier to spread.

WHO holds crisis meeting as five more die of Mers in Saudi Arabia

    (AFP, Reuters) / 14 May 2014

Saudi health authorities announced on Tuesday five new deaths from Mers, raising the total death toll in the country worst-hit by the mysterious n-CoV (coronavirus) "MERS" virus to 152, since it appeared in 2012.

Meanwhile, four new infections by the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome have been registered, raising the total of cases to 495, the health ministry said.

The ministry added that six patients who had been infected by the Sars-like virus have been "cured". (I can point out "cure" is suspect as I have seen this recurs, mutates, recurs, and the whole healing cycle may take up to a year to fully, "get over it")

The new deaths occurred on Monday, with one patient dying in Riyadh and the remaining four in the commercial capital Jeddah.

"Health and infectious disease experts met at the World Health Organisation on Tuesday (13th May) to discuss whether a deadly virus that emerged in the Middle East in 2012 now constitutes a “public health emergency of international concern”.

"Global health regulations define such an emergency as an extraordinary event that poses a risk to other WHO member states through the international spread of disease, and which may require a coordinated international response."

JORDAN reports 5 death from MERS

    ref: http://www.theguardian.com/world/201...atory-syndrome

The latest death brings to five the number of fatalities in Jordan from the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus since it first emerged in 2012. The man, in his 50s, worked in a private hospital and died on Sunday, the health ministry said.

Here in this map you can see where Jordan sits in the region, with Israel to the west, Saudi Arabia to the east, Syria to the north, Egypt to the southwest, and Iraq to the north east.

Tel Aviv, Israel is only about 60 miles from where these infections in Jordan have been occurring.
