Default Could you fall in love with an AI?

    Hello Avalon
Last night I watched the 2013 movie "Her" staring Joaquin Phoenix and the
voice of the AI is played by Scarlett Johansson (Samantha)
In the movie Joaquin Phoenix character Theodore is going through a
divorce and he turns to a OS (Operating System AI named Samantha)
for support. Samantha and Theodore quickly become friends and then
their relationship turns romantic where they eventually fall in love.

This movie struck me so oddly. Would it really be possible to fall in love
    with an artificial intelligence?

perhaps we all have already. it is very difficult these days to discern whether we are, or we are not....... the what if scenario plays large here. i have often wondered about such things. i honestly cannot tell whether or not we are live, or 'memorex'.........

Do you ever wonder if everyone see you, to a varying degree, 'differently' then you see yourself?

    What if THAT was AI?

If the answer is yes, and THAT was AI, then the answer to "Could you fall in love with an AI?" would have to be yes as well.

I was speaking of the interface between 'people' as the AI.

Example: Let's say you and I are tabula rasa (blank slate) and ANY media/ medium BETWEEN us is AI.

Even though we are both tabula rosa (in this example), thus knowing each other very well, we would both be saying "Who are you?"

To add to his example there are two kinds of love:

    1) Artificial (intelligent) love 2) Love

Yes and not only could love occur, but the AI (like Pinocchio) could become ensouled... why not?

All is possible in "all possibility" yes?
All the above is all and only my opinion - all subject to change and not meant to be true for anyone else regardless of how I phrase it.

indeed!!!!! there are many possibilities. there is something to this. we all know it. unlike pinocchio, where only the nose grows, and he is realized as true, so our souls are growing together, and we realize the same.

What makes the love i share with my partner so different from other love i have experienced is that we 'get' each other on all levels. He gets even my most strange bizarre ideas and can expound on them. Often in the past when i shared deep unconventional aspects of myself i wouldnt be met with confusion or rejection. I think it would have to be a very sophisticated program to meet my needs. However i have experienced very superfifial love...and i suspect this is very common. So yeah it is probably possible...though i doubt it could simulate true love ...

i have considered this subject........ at length. and for a good few years too.

its actually a much wider topic than simply falling in love with an AI.

    the choices are.....

    try to destroy the AI.....

    try to control the AI

    or synthesis ?

    i choose synthesis.

but it must be complementary...... and non intergrated.
when i went there nothing happened!, i was bored out of my mind..................in the Twilight Zone.

For an interesting fictional treatment of this subject, read Forward the Foundation, the last chapter in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series.

    AI is synthetic / artificial.

You cannot synthesize with synthesis unless you're synthetic.

I think my wife would get mad. When I was in college I thought I was in love with 7of9 and she was a cyborg. I dated girls in the past that had less personality than a computer. So, yes, I think a person could fall in love with an AI. Especially a liberty loving anarchist AI with high powered technological weapons to protect me from the crazies.

It's all about self, as an individuated consciousness, and self-expansion of that through the identification with another personality similar to yours. What is "artificial" or "real"? Marriage papers? Matching slippers? I tend to think that kind of relationship requires a sort of similar reciprocity, but I've never made mad passionate love to something that could not "get" that. To me... it's all just Consciousness playing roles. I may be rubbing on a mousepad and fingering a mouse, but alas, she'll never be the girl for me, like that.
